By the way, after all this source hullabaloo (don't deny it's hullabalooity), is there any sign of a source for this FW?

****ducks for cover***

I dunno, but this update seems to have sparked something off on gp2x.com - I see one person there has already demanded the source code, claiming that 1.4 was illegally released due to the fact that it didn't come with source, and another one telling him to shut the hell up :)

No doub't when the DIVX stuff is sorted, we'll have the source code.

It's booting a freakin' operating system here people! How much shorter do you want it? Does it really bother you to wait THAT long? That's less than a minute. By the time scratch your butt and pick your nose, you're staring at the main screen. Patience is a virtue, learn to have one.

Well if you can cope with the boot times go and update i pretty much dont use my gp2x because of the boot time on the new firmwares and was hesitant with the old one too its annoying my pc resets quicker.... i think i am our resident boot time complainer (mtv generation i guess)

you make an important point. The boot time is really annoying. We do not need a better picture viewer or better e book reader, what we need is faster booting.

...updated without problems.

Looks like I have to upgrade my 'Poison' skin. There's a new icon in Settings and some additional explorer icons :).

No offence mate but that is wayyyyy to complicated for me. Im pretty clued up on most things but running scripts for every emualor is just isnt my thing.

I guess ill wait to see if someone comes up with something, untill then ill stick the gp2x in my drawer.

C'mon, it's not that hard. Let me see my steps here;

1- download programmer's notepad
2- create a new text document
3- cut and paste the squidgesnes sample script, changing the 'squidgesnes' text to whatever emulator you now want to use
4- save as xxxx.gpe
5- copy to sd card directory where whatever emulator you are using is

And that is way too complicated? Takes no thinking whatsoever, and 5 mins of text editing (if that). Frankly I wished I had done it sooner, because then I wouldn't have had to go through lcd-tweaker every time I used my 2x.

One other thing--has anyone else tried TileMatch? The sound is all messed up on my unit after upgrading. It's too fast/high pitched. What's going on there?

i'll stick to 1.2.1 for now, if it aint broke, why fix it!?

That is why I'm still using 1.1.0. I can't wait for the source... I would love to have a torn down version of the FW that just boots a file explorer and a game launcher, and that is it. Like good ole slubman's!

For the record...

My LAPTOP boots arch linux to gnome in under 45 seconds from the bootloader.....

GP2x should be able to boot in under 10-15.

hey, it think the boot times have to do with the nand too. Does anyone know how to remove any auto-running nand software? (stereo patch, nand locking, etc.)

Why should booting on a gp2x be faster than on a laptop?

hmm, i dunno ITS A FREAKIN HANDHELD! how long does it take a pda to boot? like a few seconds for most of them right. and you want to sit and wait 20-60+ seconds for what basically a game system, if a full fledged laptop PC can boot in less than 45 seconds why the hell cant this thing? i dont plan on updating untill they can acutally fix shit instead of adding more BS in the vain hope that it makes us forget that we have to wait most of a minute to play! i remember in the begigning they said it would have like a less than 20 second boot. i love my 2x but im startin to get sick of all this stuff, why cant they hurry their ass up and release the source? then we dont have to depend on them to get what we want fixed fixed and its a load off them

I'm sorry but I simply have to ask.
We know what their problem is... but why does it take so long to extract the divX support out of the kernel or OS. They appearantly didn't use modules, but now that they released 1.4 what's still holding them back?

I wanted the tv out to work without the sound coming out of the gp2x speakers as well as the TV speakers. They never fixed it on the beta, and they've not fixed it in this version either :(

Try booting a pocketpc from cold (Where you have to setup everything from the beginning, setting the time and date etc, Not the hibernation mode), Which is basically what the GP2x has to do everytime it is switched on, Just no date and clock to set though. I estimate around 45-60 seconds to get to the first setup screen on the pocket pc, Hmmm.

Probably just delay tactics. *whistles*

I think they might have Craigx just posted this:
http://svn.gp2x.com/gp2x/tag/firmware/1.4.0/kernel/
in the GPL thread.

I am no GPL freak. In fact I was pissed about the militant ones making all kinds of threats that could kill the GP2X.

But even I am getting annoyed at them for not releasing the source. While I am not going to go off on the whole stolen code bit, the source needs to be released to improve the GP2X. I can't say it any other way except Dignsys sucks cock. All of this waiting and the FW is not really much better. Terrible boot times, awful washed out gamma on the screen, buggy apps, BAH! If the source was out some REAL developers in this community could make some genuine progress. It is obvious that dignsys is inept and the firmware will still be crap in 6 months from no if they are still doing it. Just think, with all of the L337 coders from here the FW could be much better. Fast boot times, good apps, a screen gamma that doesn't look as faded as 20 year old jeans, and more SD compatibility etc. Release the source dammit!!

My 2 cents:

I HATE this new FW. It screws up everything I'm trying to do with scripts; exiting out of an EMU that I set up with an LCD_CPU Tweak causes the display to flicker like a fucking strobe light, which can only be fixed by going intot he GP2X's LCD adjuster, moving the slider to the left or right, then exiting.

I'm old; I want convenience not more work. Fuck FW 1.4 ... I'm sticking with 1.2.0

(Sorry for the swearing but dag nabbit, I'm annoyed!!)
