Firmware 1.4.0 Features

Is Reaper man the new Mangus69?

Blimey, you don't half moan! You've bought a system that isn't officially released! Let these guys do their testing and give us a stable product. Or a buy a psp, whatever.

I was veryinterested in the original post. But I would never update until the thing is secure.

In the days of DrMD on gp32, Reesy used a few beta testers, I was one of them. The other guys on here weren't slagging Reesy off cos he wasn't giving the code to everyone. Why should he have? So what's different here.

Anyway, I wanna here more about the firmware...

This blaming of GPL advocates comes up a lot, but it's completely bogus of course. GPH didn't release 1.3.x because they couldn't provide the source code, but the fact that they couldn't provide the source code is their fault, not the fault of the people who were pointing out the fact that they were obliged to provide it! GPH's problems are caused by GPH and nobody else. They have this problem because, incredibly, they didn't seem to understand the terms of the GPL before they designed, built and released a product based on a Linux kernel and GPLed music player.
Perhaps it is, perhaps it isnt. However, its happened and peoples solution to this is bad mouthing, whining and generally being little "£$%S.
No offense, but I think you are overreacting. This problem is real and people are going to want to talk about it.

I respect GPL and what it stands for. I also admire people who stick up for it deeply. However I also belive there is a time and a place, you people ARNT lawyers but sometimes you act like it. It can be beneficial to give someone the benefit of the doubt and simply turn a blind eye. What scares me is the amount of bitching and whining and the form it tends to take and I do wonder if its the start of a community going down hill - completly contray to what GPL stands for!
I think we will start to see the real benefits of the GPL when the source is released. I think this community is great, but it isn't great because of the GPL.

It makes the place tense, unfriendly and just not nice to be apart of. In my life I have made some fundamental cockups, some of them COMPLETLY stupid. I'm either a lucky guy or some higher power is smiling down on me because thoughout that all I have been surrounded by the type of people who have been the kind to say "damn, nevermind pal - we know you can get it right, we still support you" and then praise when I sorted said issue, rather than the type of people who would point at my mistake, drag it kicking and screaming out, bitch about it, insult me, say wtf are you doing what kind of idiot are you rar rar etc etc and basically grinding my face into the mud over it.
Well, perhaps you are smart enough to admit your mistakes and stop doing whatever it is that is mistaken. Perhaps you should try this: make a mistake and then continue to make the same mistake for several months later despite the fact that you have been told it's a mistake and you were given a document from the start which told you exactly how not to make that mistake. Do that and then report back as to how tolerant people are.

I wonder which type of person/community GPH are currently surrounded by? I totally respect that people going off on the GPL thang have a good excuse for it at least, but a good excuse isnt always a reason to do so. I've had good excuses (maybe even reasons) for giving someone a bloody good fist in the face many times - that doesnt nessiarilly mean I should. It seems alot of people bitch and whine simply because they can. And thats it. They can, they have an excuse, so they will. No one ever bothers to ask the question "Is it Helping?" - and half the time I dont think it is. and if its not helping........
Please don't equate what I am saying with "a bloody good fist in the face". Read my messages - I think I am being polite and respectful on this issue because that is what I expect in online forums.

I just wish people would cool off more. I'm not alone in fully beliving that we will see the source that we want so bad. I also doubt im alone in beliving half the people that did the loudest bitching wont even touch it and when we have it someone will just find something else to whine about instead. I belive GPH made a cockup with the whole GPL thing and naturally wish they haddnt. However they did and that takes time to fix. If they could throw the source out this second they probably would, its actually third parties holding them back half the time. In that sense its not GPH's fault. In the sense that they should of had it sorted with the companies before they released it is admittedly their fault. That, right there, is 100% the error they made and where it started. However, now, despite being the cause of the problem, it is no longer THE problem. Whats more, yelling, flaming, mailbombing and all the other shit we've seen is DEFINATLY not the solution - all its doing is making this place a nastier place to be and is completly contray to the very heart of what GPL is which is community and team work.

Theres my 32 pounds, 67pence and one french cent that somehow slipped in. I just wish people would cool off and wait for the issues WE cant fix to be fixed by the people who can.

It is GPH's fault because they are the ones who are distributing the kernel. I'm not yelling, flaming, mailbombing or doing "any other shit". I don't think that my messages are making this a nastier place at all. But I'm not going to stop talking about it just because you and some other people don't want to read about it.

Would someone just get hold of a copy, host it (with a big notice that says "WARNING!!! NOT FULLY TESTED!!!") and post a link. Let the whiners have their firmware without all the trouble of logging into IRC and asking for it.

People might not realise it, but the GPL permits this, too. That's why there are no closed betas in the linux world. You can't stop someone from redistributing GPLed software once they have it.

Just to be clear, the GPL prohibits anyone from distributing the firmware unless they make an offer to provide the source to whomever they distribute it to. Since the source is not available, one can't make that offer, so the firmware should not be distributed. Obviously, this isn't going to stop the distribution of 1.4.x, but that is the position per the GPL.

I dont mind people talking about it, but generally it becomes a simple flame war. Cearly then alot of the people here are not responsiable enough to talk about the situation properly and another place should be found to do it.

Also my point was that GPH has not, as people say, continued making the same mistake repeatedly. I think thats a gross error. They made the one big mistake at the start and it snowballed from there. Because of their mistake they are now at the mercy of Dignysys (sp) and divx etc. If it could of been fixed in a second it would of been.

Its still their fault for causing the situation with the first core mistake. But more recent blame can be placed on other shoulders I feel.

I have no intent of stopping you from posting or discussing, but I would urge you as i would urge anyone else to seriously consider what you're typing as you do so, taking note of the audiance it will reach on these boards and think about wether or not its going to be usful or, on the other end of the scale, counter productive and even against the heart of the very thing you're fighting for.

If you search my posts you'll see that I've been very vocal in supporting the GPL, yet I like to think that I've also remained sensible and patient about the whole thing. Basically, I mean that I think like you do.

However... I'm getting fed up with every thread that mentions the "f" word (no, not the 4-letter one, the much more offensive one that ends -ware) degenerating into a flamewar.

We all know the pattern by now:

Helpful forumite: Hey, the korean site says that fw 1.5 will have beeps on the menu screen!
DaveC: We'll never see it anyway thanks to the GPL freaks.
evening2005: It's not the GPL's fault that GPH didn't follow the license.
Everyone else: FLAME FLAME FLAME FLAME.

This was a potentially interesting and useful thread, but yet again it's all gone downhill.

edit: Yes, I know that you can't distribute a binary without also offering to provide the source, but once it's out there the intent of the GPL certainly would not be to restrict distribution. Besides, at this point the GPL is kind of moot since people already have an offending binary in their possesion and only want an update.

Got that right. I'll argue the GPL issue to my death (or GPH releases it), but enough's enough. GPH is doing the right thing now. Bravo to them, they're starting to kind of care about the legality of thier operation.

I was a bit brusque in my previous reply, for which I apologize. I don't think it's for me to not post what I think because some people may react inappropriately. I think it's good for people to read things they don't like. Everyone should do it.

I vote for a Hitler analogy!

And now you may see WHY this beta release was not meant to go beyond IRC. Because any threads with the word 'firmware' in them anywhere will instantly become a heated argument about the GPL. Over in #gp2xdev, we don't talk constantly about this GPL stuff (in fact, I think the topic is "Yes, we know about the GPL") whilst getting nowhere. It's actually a very friendly place, and if you've got a problem, everyone there is helpful and hates DaveC equally.

As I have said before, this is the single largest factor hindering adoption of the GP2X. The issue will not go away just because some people fear controversy and heated discussion.

I do feel rather badly about where this topic has gone, due in large part to me. We're getting a new firmware, which is great--but the feeling I got reading this post wasn't. We need firmware, but not like this. Not with buddy-distribution and mild snobbery. What we needed was an official launch, and it needed to be shortly after the 1.2 firmware.

Giving us all a bunch of 'official' new problems and then 'betaing' the solution to them isn't a good way to go. It's going to have people feeling left out. I think we can all agree to that.

Another thing that 90% of us will agree on, is that while gpl is generally a good thing--we don't care. Correct me if I'm wrong, but your average 2x user is an accomplished software pirate anyway. I'll confess to being in that group too. While GPH may see this as a GPL issue, it's also a customer support issue, and new firmware should have been out and in our hands anywhere between hours and days after 1.2. Maybe a better solution would be daily bugfixes... Then nobody has to release the whole source aside from the bugfix—since for whatever reason GPH is having trouble giving out the source. It's messy, but soon you have enough bugfixes to make a firmware anyway.

One thing that was learned is that GPH is more receptive to angry emails than to customers, and maybe we should all start talking a little louder to the people who actually matter. When you're angry with a product bought at sears, do you sit on the craftsman forum and spin your wheels--no, you take your problem right to sears.

Yo Reaper, did you read my reply to you on page 5? I don't want you still thinking that I hold you in contempt.

I can assure you that source release of the firmware is absolutely the most critical GP2X issue to me. If you take it to forum poll, I think you'd see around 30-40% feel the same way.

WOWOWOWOWOOWAH!!!!!!! *get out his big and trusty man-hose

i hope that the flames are dying out now...

MAN! this topic should of ended ages ago. Firmware this, .0.1.0.4.3.2 that... PLEASE STOP!! What are you like 8?
This community is awful now! i find myself just writing in here to try and keep things looking nice (and smelling like farts) because all everyone does is bitch, nark, crap on people. heck its almost like a brothel in here :p

From this post on, can people please think twice about saying something pointless (for no reason, but if its amusing then i guess its ok) and negative. Its very dissheartening to see our community delve into topics worth to be put in a corner of HEAT magazine.
Come on guys! cheer up! Things were like this i remember when gph changed the name to gp2x from gpx2!!!
thats all done and dusted now, and its gotten better, and now nobody learns! give em a chance.

I have my rants aswell, but i dont go "mammy, if i dont have my firmware i am going to go poody! WAAAAAHHH"
;)

yeah, I was pretty upset last night, and wasn't reading posts in anything less than the worst possible way--inserting into them whatever I needed to keep my mood going.

I was so upset, I recharged the battery in my gameboy

I also see the GPL point. If the firmware source were released at 1.0.0 GPH probably wouldn't have needed to upgrade at all with this community working on it. The slight flip side is that somebody would write a bad one (and will in the future) that would brick units either carelessly or intentionally. There are always occasional prices for freedom. still, a bunch of software pirates arguing license legality is a bit silly.

IRC firmware downloads are for xbox modders, not us.

What does it matter anyway? This sounds like another firmware I don't wanna download. They seem to be sorting out lots of totally meaningless crap, while not bothering to adress the big gripes among everyone: Boot-time and power-consumption. I for one don't really care if there's a firmware update out, because until they get these things sorted out, 1.1.0 does everything I need it to.

I think this says it all.. The only ones bitching about GPL should have absolutely *No* R0mZ, Warez, or ANY illegitimate software anywhere on any of their handhelds or PCs. If you do you are the ultimate hipocrites ;)

.....

I don't know about you guys, but let's say I was a linux kernal developer, or the developer of some other free open source software released under the GPL... Then, a Korean company takes what you've created threw it in their machine, and put a price tag on it .... All without even compying with your softwares liscense...

For all you people that bitch about the gpl people, delete all the gpl software off of any device/pc you own... And have fun with it at the same time, without the open source software of today, FireFox wouldn't exist, Linux wouldn't exist, OoO, etc...
