Firmware 1.4.0 Features

Well, with clones come compatibility issues, regarding hardware features, different version of chipsets, needing specialized drives to get everything running properly, confused newbs, more help forum posts, multiple copies of various coding libraries for various models, Divided devving communities among the various types.

I can see a whole slew of troubles arising from clones, honestly.

My thoughts? ONE machine, ONE firmware, ONE community, GPL Satisfied, Devvers happy.

In my opinion, 'GPL freaks' come in two kinds: the kind that will use the source (which I can deal with) and the kind that won't (which I can't, in general). The kind that won't use the source are either arguing for the sake of arguing, jumping on the bandwagon or hoping the first group will be nice and do everything for them. That kind piss me off. That is that, the sky is blue, and pi is exactly 3.

So you admit you are wrong then?

One chipset and One firmware - the rest customized - everyone happy.

Platform can be both "closed" (the hardware specs and such) and open (multiple manufacturers) at the same time.

It would be good for a platform but GPH isn't such company to willing (or being able) to do so.

Hanz, you seem a LOT happier since you got your GP2X *grins* Good to see, honestly.

The GPL camp can do what they will. They refuse to use their GP2X's until the source is released, that's THEIR decision. For me, it's more against my beliefs to NOT have full use of something I paid for, that came out of food and bill money.

If I wanted to pay a buttload of money for something I don't use, I'd by a painting or something.

Before I get swarmed, I will say I see their side, and agree that things have to change. That is where our opinions part ways.

@Radek: No, I disagree. Different Supporting chips, Possibly different LCD screens, possible various incompatibilities.... It has BLU/BLU+ written all over it.

Haha yes it is true. I think the thing is I am getting bored with argueing in the same arguements over and over again. I mean: I like argueing, but I have seen all the arguements before now.
Hehe.

Edit: Just realised that doesn't stop me from having a point of view. I am flat against clones of the GP2X, as this would only prove to GPH that they should not release the source.
I don't agree with any of the flaming at GPH or at GPL nuts. But I think that GPH should respect the GPL license out of respect to their primary market. If they don't people will still be interested but it will be very bad for public relations.

-edit- Tottally new post – last one answered a question that was already answered.

So does anyone disagree with the following:

If GPH continues to break the law the GP2X will not succeed.

I don't think that can be argued against, actually.

I don't think anyone can give a firm answer on that. But for certain lots of people will be disuaded from using it, and it will be a huge PR failure.

yes it can! I went to KFC once and they said that it WAS real chicken! WHERES THE HEAD HUH??! WHERES THE HEAD!?!?!?!!

Anyway, i dont think gph is breaking the law at all, unless they threw a gp2x at the head of the cornal (kfc) and broke his head open! now thats what i call OPEN SAUCE!

Kill me! ;)

It could succeed without source if people just used it and developed for it without freaking out. The GP32 did ok and there was no FW source for that either.

The GP32 was never in flagrant violation of international copyright law, so that isn't really the best analogy to make.

Access to the source helps developement greatly. How many devs actually have access to the gp2x source code now? One? Maybe two? Now imagine hunderds or thousands of people contributing.

Yes and some parts of gp2x's chipset might be very hard to get grip on without sources... (not that it'd be impossible without but it'd be far slower)

At one point from practical perspective all that debate will not matter. For now it is.

I wonder if GPH is using code from one of the tweak apps and has cribbed it into their 1.4.0 firmware.

Heh, thats what ripping off code is all about. Get features and pay for nothing. Drive the original programmer crazy.

Pretty soon GPH is going to be taking pages from Microsloths play-book if they continue like this.

I hope they change their ways, soon.

We'll find out when the source is released XD
