I Just Got My Gp2x!!!

I got my GP2X on Christmas, great present by the way. I've got 7 emulator up so far: Atari 2600, Genesis, Master System/Game Gear, Neo Geo, MAME, NES, and SNES. I'm going to get a Lynx or Jaguar emu on it soon. I looked for 3DO but didn't find one. I also got a load of homebrew, mp3's, and I ripped The Island so I can watch it to go. I was also dissapointed with SNES emulation. SquidgeSNES runs most games fine (no sound :( ) and the other one I have, can't remember the name, runs with sound but only seems to run the ones SquidgeSNES couldn't. The other ones run slow on it. WTF!?! Anyway, Neo Geo doesn't have either but that's not too bad, the games are so much fun anyway. I'm finally getting a hang of the joystick, though it seems a little too sensitive. Overall though it's exactly what I wanted in a handheld. Though PS1 emulation would be awesome evan if it only hit 18 fps in Armored Core and from what I've seen it's at 12.

Just got the value pack shipped in yesterday.

I haven't played kirby star stacker in a long time, probably 10 years. But I'm glad I finally can on a handheld again. The best part though, is that apparantly it came out for the SNES in japan as Kirby no Kirra Kirra Kids or something. Definite suggestion if you havent' played it. It's like crack.

But anyway, back to my impressions of the unit itself.

The new interface is really nice and comfortable. As was mentioned in another thread, the extras really aren't worth the price, but they're good to have either way. I was surprised that the pouch mentioned wasn't a GPH GP2X carrying case, just a holding sleeve. However, I shouldn't have been surprised, it said pouch. The Wrist strap does not have the GP2X badge or SD card holder, it's just a regular wrist strap.

Other than that, it's a great unit. The Battery life really isn't that bad, but I think I just had really really low expectations after hearing all the horror stories.

I did have a few small issues with this though, starting out.

One, the power adapter came with a korean -> US plug. This plug was very loose, and so any small movement would shut the power off to the GP2X and reset it, not good.

Fortunately, the plug that goes into the brick is the same general plug that goes into a dreamcast, ps2, or many many other electronics. Yay for standards.

I was really hoping they'd have fixed the power plug being on the right side bit after a year, but I guess once a design is final it's final.

These are pretty much my only complaints. That's a good thing. One of the best 210$ I've ever spent :3

Jaguar? 3DO?  It is going to be a loooooooooooooooooooooooooong wait for those, as in never ;)

SNES is weak on GP2X. Squidge SNES is the better one and will run some games smooth with sound like SMB IV. It could be near full speed with some more optimising but everyone that touches it seems to vanish (what happened to Notaz?)

NeoGeo doesn't have sound? You are doing something wrong. If you set the sound to 11025 Khz it will run most games at full speed with little to no overclock.

PSX well don't hold your breath there, the hardware is not cut out for that.

Well,

Unit is fairly nice, man is it LIGHT, joystick isn't great, especially when scrolling down files, screen is nice and backlit, clear, good sound

The stick could be better but certainly it is better than PDA controls right?

I just got my GP2X today, things work ok but I can only ruun them on the NAND memory, because for some reason which I don't know why, it wont read my 4GB SD card. when I boot up the system it get to the loading screen & just freezes.

Does anybody here have any ideas why this happens?
This is brand new today & I was really looking forward to using all the great stuff out there on it.

Please can somebody reply ASAP.
Cheers & thanks in advance

Sometimes certain brands of 4 gb cards don't work with the gp2x.. What type of card is it? To me it sounds like yours is one of the incompatible ones.

Did you make sure audio is enabled in the settings menu? Also try turning the audio performance hack on or off. See my post above for others settings...

I've tried enabling audio and the performance hack, but when I exit out of the settings menu and go into a game, there's no sound. Then when I go back into the menu, sound is disabled again.

Here's exactly what I do:
Scroll down the menu to settings and click on settings. Scroll down settings menu to Audio processor enable and click it (little check appears). Hit A to leave the settings menu and go to load rom. Then when the rom loads, no sound! I increased the volume to max and it even says max, but still no sound. Then when I exit the game and go back to the settings menu, the Audio processor is disabled.

Think yourself lucky, it's more like $250 in the UK

You need to save the settings before you exit. It's the final option in the menu, "Save as Default."

re: SNES, make sure you are using the latest SquidgeSNES and the options are set correctly, e.g.

Frameskip: Auto
Vsync: Off
RAM timings: On
Audio quality: low as you can handle, I leave mine at 11k (fiddle with the Audio performance hack, some games run better with it on, some it makes crash)
Battery warning: Off
CPU clock: as high as your unit can handle.

Some roms won't run fast no matter what you do, but the vast majority (80%+) should...

Wow GunPei,

Thanks much, that really helped a lot! Um.....how do you back out of a rom and go back to the directory? The squidgenes page doesnt tell me! Thanks again for your help.

Today I got vids playing on the GP2X, cool as beans!

NeoGeo emulation is getting there....

One problem I have is with PACE, the NeoGeo Pocket emu. Anyone have any experience with it? There is virtually NO documentation for it. Anyhow, when I load it up, it plays Bomberman. My ONE and only choice is to play Bomberman on it, I don't see an option to load another rom. Again, I ask those who have used PACE if they have any helpful advice.

Thanks.

Hit L + R + Start, or hold Select for a few seconds (note: the second method was the only way in older versions).

It's *R*ACE, and I also found it difficult to get going, but it was worthwhile. I'll PM you my setup, which should work out of the box.

Yay! I got sound! I'm such an idiot. I can't believe I missed that. Thanks! :D

how would I get in contact with play-asia about getting th product replaced? also I live in the UK. Any ideas?

Please can somebody reply ASAP as this is urgent

I would try a different SD card first, as I said some brand 4 gig cards won't work with ANY GP2X.

Just shine a flashlight down the SD slot, it's very easy to tell if the pins are bent. If they aren't, do as DaveC suggested--try any other SD cards you can get your hands on. If any of them work, it's not a hardware fault.

just got mine today from www.gp32x.de today and the threw in a free sd card reader! definitely a plus. i recommend them to anyone in america. it came on time (took 3 days, i was told 2-3 day shipping) too!

I have tried a kingston SD card & it doesn't work with that. The pins are fine, the system just freezes on the loading screen.

any other ideas?

I assume it is a new model GP2X with firmware of 2.0 or higher right?

That symptom you describe is exactly what happened to me when I forgot and tried a 4 gb card on firmware 1.4. It got to the green "loading" screen and locked up. I sure sounds like a compatibility problem. Sd cards are weird. The card is not one of those "HD" cards right? those won't work. certain brands work with some devices and not others. My digicam doesn't recognize 4 gig cards at all.

yeah thats exactly whet happens, the firmware is 2.1.0 the card is a kingmax 4GB, on the play-asia site it says its compatible with the GP2X.
The card works fine with my Nintendo Wii, thats what makes me think its the GP2X hardware.
Like I said before I've tried a kingston 512MB Card & it does the same with that.

anybody else have ay ideas?

In that case the Gp2X is probably busted.
