GPD Win (x86 Computer / Palmtop)


Everything except for the quality issues is great news. I am glad you were finally able to get in contact with GPD. Really looking forward to the SoC upgrade already, not that I feel the Pyra Mark 1 won't be completely capable of fulfilling many needs for me.

They look much like a Nintendo 3DS. It would be awesome if they were able to emulate 3DS (just joking).

No I think there are other Windows people out there, for me Linux is one of the strongest selling points of the Pandora/Pyra.

I just wonder if there is a UMPC about 5-6" powerful enough to run VMs like Debian but runs Windows. I'm searching it since 3 years or so but couldn't find one. Still I think that it can be possible with the Intel Compute Stick, with a little project.
 
I have to say I resurrected my old laptop recently, got the keyboard fixed. It runs windows seven. What a breath of fresh air. I hadn't realized just how utterly rubbish windows eight and ten truly were until I used windows seven again. In twenty seconds I can just do a task and it's efficiently done.
8 and ten are cluttered and messy with needless options and apps and lot's of bullshit.
My new laptop which returns from dell for repairs in a few days will be getting wiped clean and windows 7 is going on there too.

I don't mind using windows, at least seven but having linux on the Pyra will be a nice change.
What I expect from an operating system is logical design, easy to use and uncluttered.
Iv'e never used Debian linux but I'm curious to play around with it when I get a Pyra.

This GDP... (GPD) thingie looks fine but i only need one portable computer/console/media player/internet device/Arcade in my pocket/4g/mobile phone/talking point...

Looks indeed very 7 Inch-ish. if the build quality is as good as the (mockup/rendering) images suggest, it could be an interesting Handheld, no problem with windows there. Alt least an mobile OS that will get regular updates, unlike other mobile OS. ;)

Well, according to their planned specs, it shouldn't be.
However, as all they have right now are just mockups, it could very well be it looks like that.

It has to be for the long spacebar to make sense.

Looks like they are going for overall quality components seeing the OMRON label on the L/R switches.

The ALPS joystick is nice, they got those on the XD already. However, the rubber they put on the stick looks and feels very cheap :)
 
idea: let's increase the pyra size and use sanwa sticks and switches! ;)
 
That mockup have small hands in proportion to the size of the nubs if they plan on using the same in the XD. would also make the screen enormous. Compare your thumb length with the width of your Pandora or cell phone. That screen is supposed to be like 5 inches.

Cool. Now we know where to point the next person who comes into the forums asking for the Pyra to be re-designed without a keyboard, thinner and with Android.

The thing that is really hitting the news on the GPD device, though, isn't the presence of a keyboard. It's the presence of the X86 SoC. You said above that the next project after getting the Pyra launched is to start work on the next SoC module.

In previous conversations on this, well over a year ago, two of the most resounding reasons for NOT considering an X86 (then Bay Trail) SoC were that we wanted to preserve the PND system and everything that was already compiled AND that Notaz stated he would not participate in the project if it was not on ARM. PND is getting replaced anyway. Notaz, though still involved, has publicly stated that life's twists and turns has left him with inadequate time to do everything he would like.

So, I would like to make a suggestion. Assuming grand success of the Pyra first and foremost, consider working on TWO SoC options for the next round. Keep the rest of the platform as close to 'as is' as is reasonable.

Make one SoC option the best ARM that you can land.

Consider making a 2nd version using a Cherry Trail SoC, preferably:

From what I can tell, that X7 Atom SoC has all of the capabilities of the current OMAP (and then some). It is, of course, never so easy as 'just plug it in'. Note - this is an X86 Linux suggestion.

But, I think that GPD is onto something. The rest of their devices have languished with minimal buzz. No press articles really caught on about them - I hadn't heard about them at all UNTIL they released a render and statement that they were going to create an X86 version. At that point they lit up the news feeds.

Of course the Pyra may very well run X86 compiled software well enough to make the whole X86 SoC request moot. But until you can show an actual Pyra running actual X86 compiled software at reasonable speeds with 3D working, it is hard to make that claim and have it stick.

Keep up the great work - I'm still wishing for a glow in the dark prototype. :D

I don't think PND preservation was his concern with an x86 solution... I think it was more that an x86 platform didn't interest him. He would need to chime in to answer this for sure.
 
It's weird, had this device been available when the Pandora came out I probably would have gotten it instead. But the Pandora freed me from Windows and now I could never imagine myself wanting this thing. Pyra for the win all day long.

You know that the GPD keyboard can't possibly be as good as the Pyra keyboard will be though...

It will be interesting to see what GPD comes out with on their X86 version. Frankly, I'm not interested in it running a MS OS. However, if Debian I might have to consider getting one - but would rather have the broader capabilities of the Pyra.

Frankly, the Pyra's specs (2 SD, 1 uSD, eMMC, 3 USB, HDMI, backlit keyboard, WiFi, BT, 4G, 6Ah, etc) works better for me regardless of ARM or X86. The bits that would be missing from the GPD device are all pieces that I intend to use extensively.
