Wrapping everything up!

I'll leave for Greece on Monday and move back Friday evening.
The courier is ready, the new company as well, I'll be personally there and will try to take care of the move there.
So let's hope we can do that without too many problems.

This might be a good time to bring along a checklist with a tic box for every piece of equipment and resulting case part you are expecting.

Have a safe trip!

I know there's always been the policy of "When it's ready, it's ready", but do we have any broad updated best case and worst case (pun intended) scenarios in terms of the release? Apologies is this has been asked 134322133 times already.
Well, given that "cases" is the only thing missing before mass production now, and ED is planning on going personally on Monday so they can't exactly "miscommunicate" directly to his face, I am the most optimistic that he's Two Months(tm) away that I've ever been.
But I've said something similar many times before.

I will count it as a loss if he doesn't personally see the moulds go out thedoor and to the new producer

If you all remember ED has gone there to move the moulds before and they have talked him out of it.

Hello!

Long time follower, first time poster (I think).

Cheers,

There isn't a "live" schedule being officialy kept, as there is no deadline, so to speak (which I think is good for this type of project).

I think You can make out the scenarios by reading news threads from the last couple of months; once in a while ED brings up a listing of components to be acquired (like the PCB's or case materials) and processes needed to be done (like testing this or that element), along with the time estimated for them (it was done at least once, listing lead times in weeks- look for this). Your best bet is, I think, to filter ED's posts in this forum section and go back day by day until You come upon such a listing, write the predicted times down, and then start reading again from there and make notes to these time estimates.

e: Welcome to the forums :)

Going to have fun with this while waiting...

ZTE Axon 7 (snapdragon 820) 1440p OLED, nice speakers
+ Q9 Bluetooth keyboard + mouse + gamepad (EDIT: the alpha keys are ok, dpad terrible)
+ "50000"mAh power bank

Need to figure out a solution for DIY hinge. The phone itself would get inserted into the 'protective cover' which is reinforced and hinged with the keyboard. Fone can then be removed. Without the battery on bottom it's just too top heavy to be comfortable.

With powerbank I measured 25 hours of continuous screen-on time running Snes9X

Holding it for a while, lid is TOO HEAVY. Battery would need to be removed. Looks like this goes on ice for a bit, as I need ze fone forr otzer zings..

lol. yeah a 50A hour battery bank i going to be quite large... and if it lasts only 25 hours then that thing has some mean current draw!

That looks great.

Bu did you really mean 50.000mAh?
Seems a little much.
Thanks for catching that - i had meant to put 50000 in "" quotes - this is the claimed capacity by the manufacturer. Since the runtime is roughly 4-5x of the 3250 mAh battery, i guess it's around 13000-16000 actual mAh

One device I really liked was the Japanese SHARP ZAURUS. Fantastic screen resolution and nice little clam shell unit.

Hell yes.

I recently learned Haskell on my Z.

I'm hoping the pyra will replace it fur palmtop hacking.

We'll see..

Soooo... another month+, another update?

give the poor man some time to wake up, fly there and get his bearings ;)

Yes, although throughout 2018 there was only one gap between news posts longer than this one. Once there is any news to report, I hope there will be a news post or at least a twitter post pretty quickly.

It isn't like he isn't keeping us updated. I would rather him drop us a line when he can than get nothing, plus this should be an enjoyable place for him, not somewhere he dreads going because everyone is constantly bitching about how slow things are going and giving him shit for not having frequent enough formal news updates.

Thanks for everything you do, ED.

This. Besides being sympathetic personally to, and generally trusting of ED, I think for this type of project, no deadline is needed- we're generally a pre-paying customer, not big CEO's putting money to the production department saying "here's the upfront payment. we need this product on the shelves of every major retailer by christmas 2018".

Yes, we want the product to be delivered, as we invested in a promise to get a good product, not to throw money out. Some of us plan to use this device for paid work, even employ it as their main tool- but I suppose even those of us won't wave the calendar at Team Pyra*, as they signed up to crowdfund a hobbyist consumer product (even if it's well suited for efficient work and even if the consumer base isn't massive for this price range), and not signed a contract to deliver X amount of devices capable of Y and Z by day DD.MM.YYYY

Of course it's be great to expect a release date, but if the date isn't really clear, I wish they don't say it rather than take a guess, miss it and then be put under great stress. (Like I'd treat my friends if I ordered something from them) I don't want the developers to be under pressure. Or rather, I don't want to put them under extra pressure myself, because if they are honest people they put themselves under enough already. And even though I don't know them personally, they do have credentials (the Pandora) which is enough for me to think of them as honest people.

*-by no means do I speak for them, of course- all of this is just how I perceive the general patience and attitude through the tone of the posts on this forum

Thanks for the thorough response :)

You are very welcome.

To be clear, I've seen no one here asking for the Pyra to be rushed, just for ED to put out some news once there is some.

I guess it's not too surprising there's no news to report at the moment though, all of the hardware issues thus far identified have been fixed (from the sirring noise to the 4GB issue), HNS is mostly fettling kernels for his letux OS at the moment it seems to me (albeit trying to keep it running on the Pyra), and otherwise ED is mainly firing off emails that don't get replies or waiting in hope of international post.

I too wish ED a safe flight, and a productive journey.

Well, one thing is clear. Something in the way of progress is going to happen in the next day or two. I just can't wait until the other company gets hold of the molds and to find out what colour case I may be getting on my Pyra :)

As far as I understand, the case issue is not the bottleneck in the process at all.
The "mass production" of the PCBs is not scheduled yet and the only reason for that is more hardware "tweaking"
