What's happening today

Confirmed: All First Batch Pandoras will be signed with Craig's blood on request.

I've always wanted to do one of those.

Yes, maybe I should have pointed out that I fixed up and sold my classic Cadillac over Christmas to raise some money, well the deal went though and I am hoping I can find a car or maybe fix up the current one with a new engine....

Youch. Judging from your mannerisms and attire, a car of that pedigree was probably a tough thing to see the back of.

That said, I bet it ate fuel like a...err... fuel eating fuel monster thingy... with lots of money to pay the currently obscene fuel prices.

Speaking of mannerisms and attire, more videos! I think you could do a very poetic, black and white retrospective of your life over these last few years. Showing you eating cold beans out of a can, and filling up your fentimans bottles with water hoping that it'll at least taste somewhat gingery.

Thanks, Yes it is.

Oh... crap... I placed my premium order as a separate order rather than upgrading my batch 2 preorder...

Hm... You know what? Screw it. I'm not going to cancel my preorder. I'm going to keep it, and when my second Pandora comes I could sell it off.

Unless the cost of assembling it would really be less than what I paid. Would it be better for OPT to just cancel that order if that's the case?

You could just ebay it for more than you paid for it, it will help pay for your second one :)

Oh, but I hate eBay. I plan on selling it to a friend or something. I've got a lot of nerd buddies that would probably love to get their hands on one of these. Maybe use it as a sort of demo kit- let them mess with it for a week and sell it to them once they get hooked. Sort of like a drug addict.

But if they're not interested in it then yeah, I'll sell it on eBay. Last resort and all that.

When the OpenPandora takes off and goes super global, I wonder if a 1st batch in mint condition would be a collectors item? Then again mint condition means I can't play with it now, and I can't be doing that :p

If we do take off and become massive I'll sign your unit so you can sell it for more. I bet that drunk Steve Jobs would never do that.

Hee hee nice, I'll get you a pint for that :D

Craig: Has the 100-unit limit been reached for the 7-day pandoras? I haven't heard back yet and was curious if that's the reason. Thanks.

Ok, a bunch of stuff that I think needs some more explaining.

To start off, I don't like this ambiguity:

We probably won't allow more than 100 premium Pandora consoles to be sold this week, we will then review it.

We don't know if we will take more than 100 Premium orders at all. It depends how it goes and if the 100 gives us enough money to get this project in to top gear.

Could you be more specific, please? You were also "prepared" to say July, but never did.

"take more than 100" could mean "allow more than", but could just as easily mean "we don't know if that many people will buy them", and they have very different ramifications.

Will you, or will you not be limiting the 100 premium Pandoras to 100 this week, or at all?

How about for the future? 100 each week (should be fine), unlimited (potential problems), or somewhere in the middle (maybe, depends on the value)? Would the number be dependent on the past week's production, or be a constant (hint, that's bad)?

Say the right thing, and I become far more supportive of this process. Continue to be vague and ambiguous, and ... well ... the meaning becomes clear.

Batch2 parts were delivered in December.

We can pull from them, but we really just plan to bring forward the whole batch2 manufacture date. MichaelW is already moving on it.

The fact is money does talk in some situations and now we have built up slight relations with some companies suddenly things seem to be moving like we always wished they were - with this extra cash injection we can push forward even more - we MUST ride this wave while we have the chance or we're never going to climb up to the next level. I firmly believe we can push slightly more in to the mainstream every year if we keep the momentum going.

Sure. They were *delivered*. But right now the bottlenecks are population and assembly. Do you have the PCBs (raw boards) or boards (populated) to be able to step up the production to reach capacity with your 5 workers? I haven't heard of a big surplus of these, and ED pretty clearly said that you even ran out of boards at one point.

Which brings me lastly to:

is CC aple to make another 500 Boards until End of next week?

Oh yes, now they know what they are doing (and voices from higher up seem to have done wonders) they can speed up if we can pay them to.

Shouldn't you know already whether they *can* do this? Do you have proof, other than their say-so? Have they demonstrated it? Do you have a contract in writing of minimum numbers shipped? Why did it take so long to get the voices from higher up? (Presumably not the CEO).

Why is it that they need so much money to step up the production? For some special service, like express shipping, I could understand. But if it's all the same to them, don't they already have an incentive to produce your boards faster, since it also means they get paid sooner?

Thanks for your responses.

Er, the answers in the quote. He was ambiguous because they don't KNOW how successful its going to be.

OK. So they don't know if they'll even reach 100. But if they do (in a week) will they stop, or will they continue? That's the question I'm asking.

Yeah, I'm pretty curious about this too. I sent in an email to be upgraded and am worried I missed the boat. I suppose it's the weekend though... :\

Rather than $ signs I'd just love to have a new car, and by new I mean second hand.

My current one is 13 years old and has something like 245,000 miles on it, and I know it's dying. It is going though oil like it's petrol.

My girlfriend needs it to get to Uni every day and every morning I hear it taking longer and longer to start.
13 years? ... Crappy or not properly maintained car if its giving up now :p - or then those miles are just too much for it, dunno.

Anyways nice to hear some background story and not just pandora blah blah all the time :p

My car is 21 years old (I'm about 20.5 now for perspective) and I'm hoping to get it fixed to pass our MOT test equivalent and get one more year out of it - actually I will propably drive it as long as it goes legally or until I magically get rich :p . Actually (after the money issue) I dont want to boy any current gasoline/diesel car anyways since I think they are (or atleast should be) a dying breed. Sticking to second (or like 10th? :p ) hand cars (things that have already been made) until (hoping) I get enough money to get a Tesla Model S (or "Bluebird"...) ;) ... I could write all day on this OT subject, but I'll stop it here.

Few cars will go beyond 250,000 miles without major engine work. It's the pretty bullet proof BMW 2.8 straight 6, but it's using oil, it's got a full service history, but last year I spent £1400 on overhauling everything but the engine, so even if I do the engine this year, it will be the electrics next year.

Sometimes it's cheaper to buy another car than keep sinking money in to one which is dying. The 728 has been an amazingly reliable car and I would be looking for another one, just with lower miles. I'd probably move over the LPG kit and the widescreen satnav etc. from this one if I can find a cheap low miles one with no options - the satnav literally just plugs in to the dash on models without it, it's very cleverly designed.

@ Craigix: Is the Big Box in the Right, for EvilDragon??

So if I'm 850-950 I should get getting mine soon?

You should get an email over the weekend or on monday.
I have not slept well the last few nights, keep waking up and looking at my gaim client to see if there is a 'new message' alert, hope it ships tomorrow so I can sleep.

How far into the queue will this next shipment get us? I guess I'm still a little paranoid and want to hear some number well over 950.

Oh man, can you please just go and start an own project so you don't have to constantly ask stupid questions to other people?

No one cares for your senseless nitpickery.

[edit] Ah, right, logging in allows me to ignore users. Guess I'll have to do that then.

I'm confused. You want me to start my own project (and nitpick myself?), another project (and nitpick them), or another thread (and still nitpick OPT)?

You think my questions are stupid? Fine. You're entitled to that opinion. But I'll respectfully disagree, and point out that I ask them because OPT is being unclear, and inconsistent. And a bunch of other people have told me they agree.

Then again, you probably won't see my post, anyway.

+1

I mean, he does it with good intentions, however he fails to see that it won't change a things.

But one or two more of those posts and I extend my ignore list as well :)

It's ok, benji. I didnt block you. :p

Oh, I realize that OPT isn't likely to change their ways. But maybe, just maybe, some people here will recognize the issues, and they'll take that wool off of their eyes. And if enough people do, and start asking similar things, it might be enough to get OPT to do something about it.

But one or two more of those posts and I extend my ignore list as well :)

Are you talking about my massive, deep pondering ramblings (like in the instant Pandora thread)? Or the one where I question the incredibly vague and imprecise statements made by Craig, and ask for some clarification, like earlier in this thread?

Mostly just wondering which people are finding more offensive. No promises to stop. :p

@wermy - Thanks. It's appreciated! :)
