Cnc Case That Should Be Finished Tomorrow

I'm sick of new versions of the PSP and the DS. I can't wait till I find the person who owns every different model of the PSP/DS so I can punch his/her face in for promoting such bad behavior.

granted about the DSi and the PSP2 - Where I am coming from is that there are other options now on the horizon such as P-Series Vaio and lots of other handheld x86/arm netbooks available which are becoming more and more tempting the longer the Pandora gets to market

Seriously I am even looking at OQO, WiBrian and Everun Raon handheld devices as alternatives to a Pandora - yep the OS is XP but they can be tweaked and dont cost that much more of an ebay bid - if I get my money back then these things are really tempting - ok they may not be as powerful, have half the potential, quality as the Pandora does, but they are buyable now - and in the case of alot of Arm netbooks - not bad for 200 quid

Thats where I am coming from - the market seems to have moved on developed, with lots of netbooks in small form factors - although bigger than a pandora, you can get a good deal for your money

If someone said the Pandora was going to be here in a month and it came from ED or Craig - I might stick in - but the harsh reality is that I now need something now - not later on

Its been a fun ride

Pretty much where I'm at now.

the only problem is, everytime you look for a stop gap that isnt the thing you really want you end up dissapointed.

Before you drop that kinda of money make sure you're getting the kinda of performance you're looking for because otherwise every short comming will nag at you.

I'm beginning to think that being promised that "my little pony" I never received as a child has stood me in good stead.
It's a luxury item, a fun toy, something you'll never need. The pandora will be just as fun in august as it would be in april. For me, the wait and following all the ups and downs is half the fun.
I can understand people getting bored and moving on, but if you feel the need to proclaim your frustration on this forum, it's akin to stamping your feet and going "No daddy! I don't want it now!"
Just we've had a few spoilt brats kicking the goalposts lately. Having just combed sugarlumps mane, I can confirm that it's just as much fun all these years later :D

Im just afraid that as soon I receive my Pandora something will be coming out that will be competitive with it, meanwhile I had paid for the device half a year ago and I still don't have anything.

Yes, because Microsoft, Apple, Nintendo, Sony, Asus, and Nokia are all working on devices that are even in the same class of awesome as the Pandora.

I find it odd that none are, actually. It must be a conspiracy.

Plz go cry somewhere else, you always need to chose, atleast I always needed to: Xbox,Playstation 2 or Gamecube? DS or PSP? Xbox 360 or PS3? N64 or PSX? etc.

So stop crying now and get your money back if you want, or wait a few more months, it is nearly finished.

Well, it would be a perfectly valid fear if there was evidence that anybody else at all was even interested in this market / demographic.

But there's not. So, don't worry.

That's right.. It's not a stupid fear... Think that the PSP3000 is come out recently enough to be sure that the Pandora will always be the most powerful gaming device of its time.

If that"s a genuine fear and you"re not just being over dramatic, why not get your money back, and wait until the Pandora is released before buying in again?
I can guarantee* that you have nothing to fear though: even if Sony (Nintendo, MS, whoever) have been working on a new handheld in secret and by some miracle it will be released middle of this year without anyone hearing about it, it will not be even close to filling the same class as the Pandora. There is a chance that it could have a more powerful processor and GPU, but it will definitely not be an open system, nor have a built in QWERTY keyboard. These are the two deal sealing factors for myself and I'm sure many others. If you don't care about the ability to run homebrew or type in relative comfort as compared to the games it can run, then your concern is legitimate. If, like me and so many others, the ability to install whatever app your heart desires is a driving feature, then you shall know no fear!

I don't get it. Sure, netbooks are being improved and there's new MIDs and whatnot but UMPCs are not new. Why is there only now a risk of new devices being competitive with it? Do any of these devices actually have viable gaming controls? If you wanted a Pandora but don't care about utilizing the controls in any way then yeah, there might be other purchases that work for you.

I don't think there's going to be something like Pandora that's useful for actual games.

First there isn't any evidence that something similar to the Pandora will be coming out. I would say I am 99% sure nothing will come out in the near future that resembles the capability of the Pandora in any way.

I already have an Asus N10 netbook, which is my gaming netbook. I don't want a refund nor would I request one even if this mysterious device were coming out. I want the Pandora to succeed. Which is why I talked two of my friends into buying a Pandora as well, to help the cause. But if something comes out, my friends will bail and than the whole investment will be my own: $1,000+. Also, other people might bail and it would be a downward spiral because the project won't be able to sustain that money hemorrhage.

There is the tiniest chance that SOMETHING may compete enough with the Pandora to force other people and more importantly my friends to ask for their money back.

Remember, we don't even have the CNC case yet. There is quite a bit more that has to happen before the final Pandora's get shipped to us. When we FINALLY get our Pandora's it will be a few months into the future.

$1,000 isn't that big of a deal, but its something in these tough times. So when I said I was "afraid", What I meant was I am slightly on edge that OP is losing time. The longer it takes for the Pandora to arrive to us, the more there is a chance that a device comes out that steals sales from OP. However small that chance may be.

Go to japan....

Each person has like 4 DSes there
Is not one off the sell points in PC vs Console wars, that the Console fanboys claim how expensive PC's are compare to a Console. Expect that a lot off people seem to buy a revision during the lifespan ( like a PS2 -> PS2 Slim, PSP -> PSP 3000, DS -> DSi etc ). Joined with the higher game prices... They might just end up paying more then any PC gamer, but don't realize it ;)

Your not the only person with that "fear".

If there is one thing i hate, is buying a piece off technology, and only a few months later, finding out that there is something coming / or is out, that has twice the performance. Devaluation your original product almost instantly.

Thats why the OMAP3630 is so problematic. Whats there to prevent a few Chinese clone makers from creating there own "Pandora" with a OMAP3630. The longer the shipping & heaving it in everybody's hand ( i don't consider the first batch complete, if the first person gets it on date x, and the last person only gets it x + 2 months ).

Despite the reassuring words that some people say, i have been in the IT sector long enough to know how fast something can move. And what worries me the most, is the life expectation off the 65nm OMAP3's. If 6 months after we get our Pandora's, TI desires that the 45nm process is way better for there profit margin, and they are at high production capacity, that they phase out the 65nm part ( deliberate production drop, price increase, etc ... i've seen it all before ).

It may be all good & well that Craigex, MW, ... expect the Pandora to be a 2 year minimum uniform supplied system, but like we already saw during the production, you are depended on 3th parties. If TI said to Craigex, "from now on, use the 36xx serie, for the same price price, or lower, and it's pin compatible"... You need to be daft to say no ;) And there might be even little to no choice in the mater.

I look at it from this point off view:

- TI & a few other ARM suppliers are trying to break into the UMPC, nettop etc market. You don't do that with a big press announcement, and then have the customers wait 1 or 2 years. That might have worked for other markets, but not the PC market.

- TI claims sampling starts in Q3. The fact that they now already have the set clock speed, and gpu speed, indicated that they are already sampling now, and are looking for production sampling. From that point, things can go fast if there are no major flaws in the design.

- The 36xx serie has been already know for a while. But was first quoted to being 800Mhz, now we know its 720Mhz to 1Ghz. So, i suspect that this reinforces the point above. That they are already archiving adduct results, to know what there set cpu speed can be.

- Competition seem to be increasing in the ARM market, to deliverer ARM based cpu's to this new UMPC/nettop/... market. In other words, again, those pre announcements can bit them in the ass, so now they don't have the luxury for a 2 year delay.

- Expected delivery date for the first customers is start off April. But MB production is still in batches, need manual os flash jobs, manual testing, etc. If the last customers from the first batch have theres by mid May, consider yourself lucky. Then we come back to point 1, 2 & 3.

- What if there are other upgrades like the memory on 45nm, with increased capacity... And off we go again...

I know that some people have a holly confidence in Craigex, etc, but there also needs to be some realism. May i remember people that the expected delivery date was End off November, last year!

Even if there was not the financial problems, with all the manufacturing problems, it will have been more like January. Now we are talking about April at best, while the final production off the cases is not even started. Don't forget, that case it just another prototype. Its not like it will be delivered on Monday, and production can start on Tuesday. ;)

* Whats even the status off the MB production? I hope that it already started! In other words, that the MB batches are arriving & are getting tested already. If not... What if something else goes wrong again...

* How is the battery production? Going as planned, or not even started yet?

* Whats the status off the finished key mat production? Going as planned, or not even started yet.

* Then we have the CE testing. The hope was a few days compared to a month. No offense, but take a month to be "safe". Based on the track record here. You can push all you want, but like i said, 3th party... If they delay because off any reason...

It does not take a rocket genius to see how many things that can go wrong, and delay the project even more.

My own guess time line for the case:

Case test sample done: 04 March 2009
Delivery at best: 10 March 2009 ( Yes, it needs to be tested again a physical setup again, because there have been changes to the design ).
Production starting off the case: 16 to 20 March 2009.
Required amount for a first batch: +5 days.
Delivery at best 28 March...

For the other elements, there is to little information to be a guess time line.

You know, i have had several people ask me what happened to that "thing" that i ordered. Its nice to keep telling them: "Its not in production", "They are still solving problems"... And you get a look back ... Today we are March 2009... I for one do not see it physically possible to start delivering the first batches by start off April 2009 ( You may always prove me wrong! :) ).

@Benjiro

I tried summing up what you wrote with one sentence, but people took it that I was being melodramatic.

We all have to stay in this game though. Have to see it through the end.

They can't start the board production until they get CE and FCC approval.
