What will a Pyra be able to do that the OpenPandora can't do now?

The most important improvements and additions to me are the keyboard layout, modern web browsing, compatibility with my current wired headsets, and possibly being able to do mobile messaging. With just the browsing and headset I would never be without it, so everything else is just extras for me. Games and emulators I am most looking forward to are Eldritch (works on 1GHz, I have a CC) and N64. Other software should be available or improved, but no names are coming to mind right now.

I can't wait for better Eldritch, Minecraft, Revenge of The Titans, and Hammerwatch. Also hi-res N64 and Dreamcast.

Bah, I totally forgot about Dreamcast even though others already mentioned it. Then I won't be afraid to use my real one, as I will have a backup option (but I would rather play my games while not sitting in front of a TV).

There are also a couple other games that I am interested in, however I haven't even looked into them for the Pandora.

I already play a lot of minecraft on my home computers, so I am good. the things I am mostly excited about are more RAM and a faster cpu. I am tired of browsing the internet through my smartphone. I'd like to use a modern and fully capable browser while I am not at home. Pandora just can't handle it anymore. also the hdmi output is a huge deal to me. that will let me use most diplays right away, and others by using converters. so this actually opens a world of vjing applications to me, that I could never make use of with pandoras AV out. apart from that, it makes my laptop pretty much obsolete, the only thing that it had over my pandora was an hdmi output. it's way easier to carry some sort of portablde keyboard and mouse, and just use a display on location, then stuffing my notebook into my backpack all the time.

Late to the party, but... From what I hear, improved keyboard.
I use my Pandora as a portable typewriter. Emphasis on portable.

My only issue is the bloody FN key combos that require me to use more then my thumbs and breaks my concentration, and flow.

One the shoulder buttons, should, function as an fn button. However, this may have changed since I've buggered off for a year.

The great keyboard wars on this forum kind of burnt me out.

The keyboard wars have ended. Most people are quite happy with the result:

Shoulder buttons default to Ctrl, Alt, Shift and Fn.

I like that a lot. :) wish I wasn't broke so I could pre order a Pyra.

Yeah, I always found having shift and ctrl on the shoulders made entering shell control codes (e.g. cut and paste) much easier, and made writing correctly capitalised text really natural. I'm glad Fn will be on a shoulder on the Pyra too, and hopefully my muscle memory will be able to memorise finger fn+H for pipe better than it did for button fn+b (or whatever button it is, I forget).

I tried that, but when I tried to tear off the screen as if it were paper sticking out of the top of a typewriter, it was less successful.
Don't tear the paper off inside the typewriter, turn the thingy on the side to feed it out. There are probably millions of unused portable typewriters out there in working condition, so pick one up if it will be of use.

The Pandora/Pyra are great for a little typing on the go, especially since they are pocket sized, however they have so much more to offer. They can also be used to keep and display all your recipes or watch cat videos, which typewriters sorta suck at unless you only have a few recipes or the cats are sitting on or messing with the typewriter (still no good for watching them later, though).

shift and control on the shoulders was good, but there really are not a lot of shift+control commands.

Now having Fn, shift, control and Alt on the shoulders should open things up for chorded modifiers. You could relatively easily map an entire additional layer in the Fn+shift+key space or Fn+alt+key space or...

That was the thinking when Fn and Shift were put together on the main keyboard area and shoulders anyway. In theory it opens up the capability to chord those modifiers together on the keyboard and/or shoulders.

I'm looking forward to having a chance to try it out. Always 2 months away.

I don't know if this question has been asked or addressed already, but I'm really hoping that Pyra's flip-up display doesn't have the same open/close motion as OpenPandora's. Hopefully the joint has some form of "stop-points" that allow for different viewing angles rather than a 180° opening swing. The case design looks so close to that of the OpenPandora's that I'm worried this issue will persist.

It does not have any stop points. I have seen multiple claims that it should be better this time round, but I doubt it. Given enough time, the hinge will loosen.

Glowing in the dark and HD-porn of course.

The case is compatible with the DS hinge and you can get it cheap at stores that sell spare parts.
Adjustable angles are nice though if it's done right like on many notebooks, in the end it just needs enough friction and since we got way better material this time, it shouldn't change too much over time like it did with the Chinese Pandora cases and their paintjob.

Damn that's a bummer  That was one the worst things about the Pandora (apart from it's size).
Is the case a tad slimmer?? It looks like a one-for-one copy of the Pandora (minus some button rearrangement) which is sort of disappointing.

Same hinge, but there is a difference in the plastic area which should provide it to stay in place at any angle between the open and closed position. The Pyra is a tad larger in height and depth by a few millimeters, you can't cram more into that form factor and not expect some changes.

( Pyra )139 mm x 87 mm x 32 mm vs ( pandora )140.29 mm × 83.48 mm × 29.25 mm (if the wikipedia pages are correct)
