Does anyone have any ideas or theory on what might replace Facebook?

Is it twitter?

Is it something you use now and have a feeling might balloon? Is there an idea you have of a site which should be made?

Personally I think Twitter might overtake Facebook but not kill it like Myspace was killed, I like the way twitter does not datamine me to any extent and it's not got the nightmare of having to turn down 'friend' requests. It's all very casual.

Maybe a sort of clone of Facebook but more anonymous and/or private could have an impact, I don't use Facebook because I found the information collection more and more sinister (that and having people I hated from School seriously think I wanted to still be their friend).

What do you think? I'm interested in trying Facebook alternatives.

Twitter will certainly outlast Facebook because at its core it is not based on as much of a gimmick. That said, I'd be surprised if they were not still one of the dominant forces on the internet in ten years' time (bold words, I know) simply because of the utility that people seem to find in it. Because of that, I don't think we've seen the product that will replace it yet, because the company is yet to be founded.

(should probably state here that I have no facebook account, and a twitter account that is only very rarely used).

Well, the reason everyone used Facebook was because of their damn good mutual friends system.

You register and within a few minutes you've found tons of long-lost friends and find out what they're doing. Since Facebook tells you to use your real name (and a lot of people did that) instead of a nickname, it's easier to find old friends as well.

Twitter doesn't do anything like that, it's like a public short message system, so I doubt it will replace Facebook.

Right now, sadly, I don't see anything that could cause danger to Facebook - except FB themselves.

More and more people are becoming aware of the data collections, and they don't like that.

Facebook needs to change this, otherwise they might start losing more and more users.

And people might get tired of posting their life on walls, so that might also become an issue.

I like the suggestion of DuckDuckBook ;) DuckDuckGo is excellent. It's kept surprising me in good ways - try typing in just 'xkcd'. Found that one by accident. I got an invite for Diaspora, but I am still leery of social networks in general. I've never used any of them - Orkut, Myspace, Friendster, LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+, Twitter...

I've heard Plurk is popular in some circles - it's similar to Twitter but worked better - then Twitter added the ability to actually sort of follow threaded topics... which usually works, I suppose.

I don't know what would make me want to use a social network. The problem is that popular things tend toward the lowest common denominator. I want whatever usurps Facebook to have an excellent and progressive privacy policy, and I want it to be paid for by the users instead of through data mining and affiliates. I don't suppose that's very likely though.

Or it could be secretly run by the international intelligence community. :p

Of course, you should all be awaare that FB (and LinkedIn and all the others) are trackign you whethor or not you are logged in, and whethor or not you are even a user.

ie: FB is tracking you _anyway_; they may not know all your info from your personal FB account, but you can bet they track you all around, and have deduced quite a lot about you, and probably figured out who you are. You know how every page on the net has a Liek button etc, right? Thats a _script_, running on _your browser_. How much info do you think it is sending up to FB/etc, on damned near every other page you visit?

None. All facebook.com (and associated) domains are adblocked B)

Well, I personally don't care if Facebook is tracking me (it's pretty easy anyways to find out on the web what I'm doing), but I don't like the fact that their doing it - especially as a lot of unexperienced users (young ones especially) are posting random crap without realizing that this will never disappear again... which CAN make it hard to find a job later.

And that's the dangerous thing about it - we probably all did and said some thing we shouldn't when we've been young, but when applying for a job, nobody knows.

Now with FB, everybody can look for that...

I wonder if people will open the bin and dust the scrambled eggs and tea bags off of Google+ now?

Personally I did enjoy Facebook for a while, it was a handy way for me to keep in touch with friends and family because I'm a bit anti-social at times. It did grate on me that they do what they do though, it just saddens me that enough is never enough with these corporate shits, why couldn't they be content with the millions that they were already making without aggressive data mining and other ventures? Greed, yes, it's always that. Personally I would like to see every second of Zuckerberg and crew's entire life publicly broadcast for all to see, diarrhoea and all.

Google+ is far better in my opinion but I doubt it will take over fb.

G+ groups are great. I can post at work but not include my boss so he doesn't know I've posted!

Maybe you're on to something, maybe we need to make a Facebook clone which has some grammar and general intelligent tests before it lets you sign up, so we can avoid all the undesirables ;)

Actually, if a site like that exists I'd be interested in trying it. Even if it rejects me.
