Definately yes.

For videochat applications nainly and maybe for taking some pictures on the go and directly editing them with gimp or something.

This is something no camera or smartphone can do today :)
Video chat would be sweet with a Pyra. Especially with more RAM and a better processor.

Some companies like Audi or hosting services don't allow cameras because of security issues. As I know that quite some system administrators use the Pandora in-house, that would be a downside.

Camera is absolutly necessary for those who don't have a smartphone like me and don't want to carry another device.

I don't undestand why some people don't want to have it and how you can carry a huge smartphone with your Pandora?

I don't use a camera frequently, but the camera would be a big advencement for the new Pandora aka Pyra and a camera can be useful occasionally. I really want to use my Pyra as a smartphone with a little phone without camera.

And at this price a lot of people wouldn't buy it because it hasn't camera.
Very few things are "absolutely necessary". I hardly use a camera on my smartphone as it is. While there are certainly useful things a camera can bring, I doubt anyone can really claim it as a necessity.

It's a useful gimmick, not essential at all, but still something that brings it closer to being a fully featured miniature laptop and jack-of-all-trades replaces-all-your-other-devices handheld.

Since smartphones and tablets have probably driven down the price and size of cameras, it makes sense to include it if it can be fit somewhere.

It makes as much sense as having a built-in microphone and speakers -- sure, the quality is relatively crappy, but it's better than nothing and can be very useful in some circumstances, especially if you want to travel light. Would the Pandora be worthless if it didn't have built-in mic and speaker? Of course not. But I'm still glad that it has them, even if I don't use them that often.

I am not saying not to include a camera, I was simply pointing out there wasn't a "need". If you had read my earlier posts, you would know that I have pointed out there was no reason not to include at least an outer-facing camera as long as we feel it is worth the cost it will add.

Also, Including speakers is standard for a game device, you can't make an argument that it can be left out.

As for the mic, the Pandora directly makes use of the microphone for DS emulation.

My argument is that we can/should include speakers, a mic, and one or two cameras, even though they will all be relatively crappy. Some people were saying that we should only include something if it is top quality, and otherwise it is not worthy enough to have it since you would be better off with a top quality external peripheral of your choice. I was just trying to counter that argument by observing that we don't use that reasoning to exclude speakers and a mic, even though clearly you can't have top quality speakers and microphone in a handheld.

I agree with _wb_.

Although part of the Pandora community, I still feel a little on the outside, as I'm not an engineer, programmer, coder or whathaveyou, so I think in that respect I can offer an opinion from a somewhat different point of view. I must say, that the thought of the Pyra having a camera and mic makes it more appealing to me than if it didn't. It makes it feel more like a miniature laptop/console. And so having the cam (and mic - which is useful if I want to video conference etc), makes it more versatile and I like that very much.

Please excuse me if I rambled. Just my humble opinion :)

I never used it too (when I has a smartphone). but I am aware that it can be useful sometimes, and if you don't have any camera it can be an handicap if something important to record happen.

Has a multifunction device, you carry everywhere, it is a necessity to have a camera to me.

Pyra will be the ULTIMATE portable device so even if I don't want it to be like smartphone, I think a camera is useful and it is necessary to be the ultimate.

I'm sorry, but that still doesn't justify it as a "necessity". Because you can apply the same vague argument to just about any feature. (ex. "The Pyra can't call the police, and that's a necessity in times of emergency")

Going to be hard to do, consider how hard it is going to get voice calls on this thing.

And cameras aren't? Seem the only thing about them that aren't standard, is good cameras. Let's change that.

Also, if I'm going to carry a usb camera around, I might as well carry a regular camera. Which I didn't want to do.

Hmmm, an interesting point. Is this hypothetical or have you definitely decided against a camera with this as (one of) the reason(s)?

Oh you're right, I totally missed the cameras on the Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gamegear, Neogeo Pocket, Atari Lynx, Sega Nomad, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP, GP32, GP2X, and Wiz.

Obviously meant recently. Other wise, we might as well say analog sticks aren't a standard.

Just because the 3DS and Vita have cameras does not mean it is "standard". It would at least need to have proceeded from the previous generation. If the PSP and DS had had cameras, and then the 3DS and PS Vita continued to have cameras, then the argument could at least be made that they were standard. (although I still wouldn't consider it so unless it had been for 3 generations)

Well, it was on the DSI. Do you think they are going to suddenly drop them on their next handhelds?
