I want to use the Pyra to replace my phone but I have no delusions of it being a great phone. My use case is almost exclusively as a data device, and phone use would predominantly be at home where I don't have to worry about looking silly, or where I can have a bluetooth handset that looks more like a traditional and comfortable phone.

My use isn't going to happen until ED puts the 4G chip in though.

It's a shame, A LOT of people would want to use the Pyra to replace their smartphone, Pyra would be a smartphone killer since it can do all a smartphone better and with enough battery, except... a camera.
For something to be a "smartphone-killer" for a lot of people, it needs to be not only an alternative, but a preferable alternative for a lot of people. If it's not hard to carry both, there isn't much reason why using just the Pyra would be the preferable alternative for a lot of people.
Why carrying a smartphone+ a Pyra if you can only carry a Pyra? That's my point. Of course some people love their smartphone usability. But I'm talking about features, yes Pyra can do all a smartphone can do better (instead of camera)  and longer so it's a smartphone-killer in features. That's why the phones features aren't negligible and another little step should be done by adding a camera to be able to do all a smartphone can do.
your biggest assumption is that a LOT of people want to replace a smart phone with the Pyra. i do not believe this is true.  Ed has also stated that there will not be a camera so there goes another smart phone feature.

I think the vast majority of potential buyers of the Pyra would not want it to be a phone. there is already a lot of paranoid users that do not want the 3G module in the Pyra either so a phone for them is completely out of the question.
I'm talking about people who want to carry their Pyra everywhere. I do believe that if  the software is well made a lot of people would chose to take only the Pyra, because I see no reason to have a smartphone and a Pyra on you. I believe that between carrying two devices and having to open a lid + headset, people will chose to open the lid.

Also I'm talking about people who would have to chose between buying a smartphone or a Pyra.

I want to carry my Pyra everywhere, yet I still plan to own a phone.

There is a reason. To have a better phone experience. All of the things you say the Pyra does better (games, web browsing, camera, etc.) are not essential to a phone experience. A phone experience is dialing a number and talking to someone. This is an experience that the Pyra would not do better.

Also I'm talking about people who would have to chose between buying a smartphone or a Pyra.
Why would anyone have to choose? Phones didn't just pop up overnight, they likely already own a smartphone. If they don't, then they probably weren't interested in smartphones in the first place, and preferred feature phones.

Cool. Me too but that doesn't prove that a lot of people will not take the Pyra alone.

I said:

Someone who want that want games or whatever Pyra's experience, so yes it is essential.

And a smartphone haven't a better phone experience, because you can phone on Pyra as good as on a smartphone. What you're talking about is a smartphone experience (being able to put the device on your ear), not a phone experience.

Why would anyone have to choose? Phones didn't just pop up overnight, they likely already own a smartphone. If they don't, then they probably weren't interested in smartphones in the first place, and preferred feature phones.
Because there is different people on the earth, not everyone are like you, maybe he never owned a smartphone and decide to own one now, maybe he want a device which he can play games with and wonder why not take a 600€ smartphone instead of a Pyra. (Also of course: maybe he broke his smartphone, maybe  he lose it, maybe the hardware are outdated...)

Yes, but just saying "a lot of people will" doesn't prove that a lot of people will, either.

And what's to stop them from carrying their Pyra and their phone together? You are confusing a gaming experience with a phone experience.

And a smartphone haven't a better phone experience, because you can phone on Pyra as good as on a smartphone. What you're talking about is a smartphone experience (being able to put the device on your ear), not a phone experience.
Yea, a smartphone does have a better phone experience; So does a feature phone. Because they provide a good dialing experience, which is essential to the phone experience. I have already explained to you why the Pyra would not provide a good dialing experience. Also, while I wasn't claiming it, the ability to use a phone by holding it up to your ear has always been a phone experience, not just a smartphone experience.

Why would anyone have to choose? Phones didn't just pop up overnight, they likely already own a smartphone. If they don't, then they probably weren't interested in smartphones in the first place, and preferred feature phones.

I never said that they were like me. You are the one who claims that tons of people want to do this when the only other people who have expressed a wish to do so are Natsu, WizardStan, and slaeshjag. That's a whole 3 people. And WizardStan has specifically mentioned that he doesn't expect to get a good phone experience out of it.

-God Ginrai

And what's to stop them from carrying their Pyra and their phone together? You are confusing a gaming experience with a phone experience.
Maybe because they don't want to carry both, especially unnecessarily? Why carry two different devices when one device can do both? It's like telling someone to carry a MP3 player when their phone is perfectly capable of being one.

I have already explained to you why the Pyra would not provide a good dialing experience.
Seriously, whether they want to use the keyboard or touchscreen, it wouldn't be that hard.

The same effort you would put in to dial on a flip phone would be about same effort with the Pyra.

1) I'm pretty sure there was more than that.

2) Not everyone has to be vocal about, especially if they don't know about the forum yet.

3) While that might be true, it can still be good enough for people.

@Natsu and Kiga... Have any of you carried around the Pandora? While it has about the same width, it's a bit deeper and a little over 4 times thicker than the Samsung Galaxy S4, which is a smartphone I consider ridiculously too large. While sure it could fit in a large cargo pants(trousers) pocket, or a coat pocket.. forget about jeans.. and It's not entirely comfortable to carry around even in Cargo pockets. My Pandora usually travels in my laptop bag, which I reluctantly drag everywhere.

Now with that said the Pyra is supposed to be slightly wider than the Pandora.. Now does this seems like a good phone device?

Wasn't this thread about Cameras?

A pandora will fit in the pockets of a pair of jeans, provided you shop carefully. It does feel like you're smuggling a brick though.

Last time I tried It was grinding the LCD top lid with the base because it was too tight and would push out of the pocket when I sat down.

Yes, but just saying "a lot of people will" doesn't prove that a lot of people will, either.
Once again you should read what I write better, do you know what mean "believe"?

I do believe that if the software is well made a lot of people would chose to take only the Pyra, because I see no reason to have a smartphone and a Pyra on you.
I gave my opinion, you try to prove that it is false while you haven't a single way to prove it.

And what's to stop them from carrying their Pyra and their phone together? You are confusing a gaming experience with a phone experience.
Do you read a single thing of what I write, I said that it's easier to carry a Pyra alone, and A LOT of things can stop them like having their pockets already occupied.

Yea, a smartphone does have a better phone experience; So does a feature phone. Because they provide a good dialing experience, which is essential to the phone experience. It's a good dialing experience TO YOU. You have no way to prove that it's a better phone experience and yes it's a better smartphone experience since we are talking about smartphone. Number disposed in square and holding a phone to your ear isn't the phone experience but the smartphone  experience (or whatever) since actually you don't need them to phone. If I follow your logic I should buy an antic phone to have a good phone experience. As I already said it's about communicate note your favorite way to dial.

Why would anyone have to choose? Phones didn't just pop up overnight, they likely already own a smartphone. If they don't, then they probably weren't interested in smartphones in the first place, and preferred feature phones.

I never express the wish to use the Pyra alone, once again you shoud read because I said 2 times that I will probably have a feature phone.

Yes my reflection are valid (and pertinent) , all you did is to give your opinion and your opinion is: "I need a smartphone dialing experience".... "Pyra are Bulky...." allright that's you're opinion and I ain't agree with you and I do believe that a lot of people would want to use their Pyra instead of smartphone+Pyra or if they have to chose between buying a Pyra or a Smartphone. But don't present your opinion as some argument against my reflection.

You haven't brought any concept or reflection. I produce some reflection, all you trying to do is invalidate, but you ain't even able to do it.

We reached the point when you will repeat over and over even if you know (unless you are stupid) that I am right. So I'm done with that discussion.

It seems to me that you are the one who doesn't read what you write. You never used the word "believe" originally:

I don't understand why ED don't want a camera. It's a shame, A LOT of people would want to use the Pyra to replace their smartphone, Pyra would be a smartphone killer since it can do all a smartphone better and with enough battery, except... a camera.
I gave my opinion, you try to prove that it is false while you haven't a single way to prove it.
And you can't really say that I didn't supply a reason why it is false when I specifically addressed that quote you just pasted in one of my earlier posts:

I do believe that if the software is well made a lot of people would chose to take only the Pyra, because I see no reason to have a smartphone and a Pyra on you. I believe that between carrying two devices and having to open a lid + headset, people will chose to open the lid.

Do you read a single thing of what I write, I said that it's easier to carry a Pyra alone, and A LOT of things can stop them like having their pockets already occupied.
And I have already addressed each point of yours about said issue to point out that it is either highly unlikely or just bogus.

It's a good dialing experience TO YOU. You have no way to prove that it's a better phone experience and yes it's a better smarthone experience since we are talking about smartphone. Number disposed in square and holding a phone to your ear isn't the phone experience but the smartphone  experience (or whatever) since actually you don't need them to phone. If I follow your logic I should buy an antic phone to have a good phone experience. As I already said it's about communicate note your favorite way to dial.
No, good dialing experience period. Why do you think the Dial Pad is designed the way it is instead of the rotary it used to be or just rows of numbers? Bell Labs did a study back during the 1960s, from which they determined the 3-by-3 plus one layout to be the best, called "Human Factor Engineering Studies of the Design and Use of Pushbutton Telephone Sets": http://www.ascend.com/bstj/vol39-1960/articles/bstj39-4-995.pdf

And I never said that you said it. I said that people are different than you because you talk like you can predict all the situation while you cannot as I proved it here and when you was claiming that people can carry smartphone+ Pyra everywhere because the have 2 pockets while pockets can be full.
No, I have not "known" the situation, I have simply pointed out that your estimations of a "ton of people" wanting to replace their smartphone with their Pyra lacks solid evidence. To support this claim, I have provided reasons for why people would not want to replace their phone with their Pyra.

I never express the wish to use the Pyra alone, once again you shoud read because I said 2 times that I will probably have a feature phone.
Oh, is this where I get to ask you to read what I say? I said that you claimed tons of people would want to do it. Then I listed 3 people who did, which your name was not among.

First of all, I never said "I need a smartphone dialing experience". I claimed that dialing is an essential part of the phone experience, which it is.

Secondly, I never claimed that the Pyra was bulky. I simply claimed that the Pyra was more bulky than a phone to point out that there is no way you were fitting a Pyra into your pocket if you couldn't fit a smartphone. (Because you claimed earlier that you couldn't fit both the Pyra and the smartphone in your pockets)

You haven't brought any concept or reflection. I produce some reflection, all you trying to do is invalidate, but you ain't even able to do it.

We reached the point when you will repeat over and over even if you know (unless you are stupid) that I am right. So I'm done with that discussion.
All I have done is given proof that your claims hold no water, and you have steadfastly ignored my opinions, accused me of not reading your posts, or put words in my mouth. No matter how you try to paint this badly for me, no one is going to believe that crap when they can read the topic and see for themselves.

I'm not saying that some people will not do this. I am merely claiming that anyone interested in a good phone experience would not. Hence why I made this 3DS analogy that started it all:

It's more feasible to carry a Pyra alone than to carry a Pyra + a smartophone, right?
It's more feasible to carry a smartphone alone rather than a smartphone and a 3DS, right? However, anyone who wants a good gaming experience will take their 3DS along with them.

I have already explained to you why the Pyra would not provide a good dialing experience.
Seriously, whether they want to use the keyboard or touchscreen, it wouldn't be that hard. The same effort you would put in to dial on a flip phone would be about same effort with the Pyra.
That's actually not true, dialing with a number row is much more inefficient than dialing on a numpad. Dialing with a touchscreen would be better (than dialing on a number row), however, using the Pyra's touchscreen would be awkward compared to just dialing on a numpad or smartphone touchscreen. I'm not saying you can't do it, but it is certainly a more inferior dialing experience.

1) I'm pretty sure there was more than that.
There may be some more, however those 3 are the only ones I particularly remember seeing. However, you are welcome to try to dig up the information to increase that number if you so wish.

2) Not everyone has to be vocal about, especially if they don't know about the forum yet.
Of course not, but you can't convince anyone that some large number exists without enough people being vocal about the issue to make that argument convincing enough. Also, I think the number of people who somehow know about the Pyra but not the forum at this point are surprisingly few.

3) While that might be true, it can still be good enough for people.
I never said it wouldn't be enough for some people. I am merely pointing out that those people seeming to be in the minority does not help the argument that there are a ton of people who want this.

No, but I have a 3ds. Never needed a bag and have no problems carrying it in my pockets. Are you saying the Samsung Galaxy S4 is too large? I disagree. You carry it in a laptop bag? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

Slightly wider wouldn't make that much of a difference, if any.

Yes, yes it was.

Well, a 3DS is not exactly a good measurement. To give you an idea: We'll use the height of the 3DS lid as a unit of measurement, henceforth called 1 DSS. The Pandora is 1 DSS taller, wider, and longer than the 3DS making for a vastly larger size, especially in the pocket. It's still possible to fit the Pandora in your pocket depending on the size of your pocket, but it is a much tighter fit than the 3DS by far.

Yes it is and don't get me started on the note series, and no.. I was talking about the Pandora about being in the laptop bag.

The 3DS is still considerable smaller then the Pandora and what the Pyra will be.

Really don't think people are going to think about it as much as you are when they dial a number, especially when most of their numbers will be in their contacts. I'm saying it wouldn't be "more inferior" to such an degree that you are expressing and would hardly be a deterrent.

Also, I think the number of people who somehow know about the Pyra but not the forum at this point are surprisingly few.

At the same time, I'm just trying to point out that you are downplaying the amount that will do so.

Not a good visualization. I do know, it isn't that much bigger than a 3DS XL.

Yes it is and don't get me started on the note series,
 Well, a bunch of note/s4 users and I have to agree to disagree.

You carry it in a laptop bag?

I admit that Pandora may be little less conformable tall wise, but the Pyra being a little wider isn't

going make much of a difference.

Plus, carrying a Pyra would still be better than carrying a Pyra and a phone.

You do realize that you are now trying to use a platform where the majority of games can't keep people interested for more than 5 minutes to make a claim that the same is true for Augmented Reality games. That's basically stacking the odds in your favor.
Looking at was is available for iOS/Android, both markets already left these boundaries behind.
Also, when did Google make an AR game? o_O
Mea culpa, I thought about Ingress, but taking a closer look, its some kind of augmented reality game, but it is not utilizing the camera
Kind of weird to ask me why I think it's already a given when you said all it takes is porting.

Anyway, well, if a camera is built-in, I expect it to at least work.

That's like ED selling the Pyra and saying you need to get the screen to work yourself.
Someone has to do the port. But again I see a "it sure will be available" attitude, and would like to know why you are so optimistic about it.

Well, at least it would be there when you need it. :p
I strongely recommend to include a slot for a swiss army knife, could be usefull if there is a need for it.
Why I think it will give a better experience? It will give a far better experience just because of the battery life.

I ain't talking about mainstream. I talk about people who would want to buy the Pyra but will not because they would not see the reason to buy a 600 euros device which they will not use as often as a 600€ smartphone. That's why I think a lot of potential new users will think "oh shit why it haven't a camera, well I will buy an android instead".
Ah.. now I get, why smartphones just could not penetrate the mobile phone market over the last years, because people value the battery life over everything. That whole parapgraph does not make much sense to me at all:

You are talking about a group of people that is not mainstream, but has to decide between a smartphone and a Pyra and eventually buys the smartphone because of the camera ? What decision process is this ? If they are not mainstream they probably give attention to the devices specific capabilities, and weigh them against each other (otherwise they would not be "not mainstream" and probably not even be interested in the Pyra) - hard to believe that the camera will tip the scale - especially if battery life would be an important factor too - which I doubt as battery life won't be stellar anyway.

If Pyra have a camera, people will be able to think "yes it's 600 euros but it will replace my smartphone and do whatever a smartphone can do better with a real battery life".
Would you mind answer my question, why will the Pyra perform better in every aspect than a smartphone ?

You are misunderstanding the analogy. I never said anything about taking only the 3DS. I said you would not take only your smartphone if you wanted a good gaming experience. That's because the 3DS provides a good gaming experience, while the smartphone doesn't.

I never said it wouldn't be enough for some people. I am merely pointing out that those people seeming to be in the minority does not help the argument that there are a ton of people who want this.

Rather than downplaying, I'm simply pointing out that there is not solid evidence to suggest that a large number of people will do so.

Because that's not a off the wall feature and part of certain devices converging together.
Would you mind answer my question, why will the Pyra perform better in every aspect than a smartphone ?
The point is to at least have the features there, not perfectly beat out the phone. We may not be able tomatch them performance wise, but we can beat them in features.

Plus specifically for the camera, it just plain out convenient.

You are misunderstanding the analogy. I never said anything about taking only the 3DS. I said you would not take only your smartphone if you wanted a good gaming experience. That's because the 3DS provides a good gaming experience, while the smartphone doesn't.
Yes, but if next 3DS revision or handheld can provided a "good enough" phone experience without sacrificing the gaming experience then I would only need to carry one thing.
Sorry, I did the best I could... ^_^ ;

I wouldn't really say so. The only games I've seen people actually spend a large amount of time on their phones/tablets were either puzzle games, card games, or board games. All the genres where an AR game would actually make sense are normally installed, played for a short period of time, and then abandoned due to no physical controls.

Mea culpa, I thought about Ingress, but taking a closer look, its some kind of augmented reality game, but it is not utilizing the camera
Oh wow, I've never even heard of this. Thanks for the tip.

I'd probably find more use for the swiss army knife than the camera. :p
