Hex it is then. Perhaps also torx doesn't require positive force to retain in the socket, and theoretically a sufficiently deep slotted screw would be able to keep the screwdriver engaged through gravity alone.
Course, for me the screw wasn't the problem, it was the size of the hole it was sat in. A hex bolt would be easier to force through such a hole, because you wouldn't need to worry about breaking the thread through overpressure, though there's still a risk that the force exerted on the threads to drive the bolt past the obstruction would break them.
