Proper size is easy, care is not. In order to remove a Robertson screw you need downward force while twisting, which then also produces an upward force: you are effectively applying twice as much force (at least) on the threads as required for any other screw. The required force goes up substantially if it sticks for any reason. And since you don't know whether it'll stick or not until you start removing it you have a choice: put as much force into it as you can or have the screw slip a couple times before you finally get enough force to grip. Overtime either the screw will strip from slippage or the threads will strip from excess force and no amount of care will prevent that.Right tool for the job:With proper sized screw driver and care the risk of stripping the screw would be minimal.
But one can "feel" when the driver starts slipping from the screw, before any damage is caused to the screw head. Then it's just matter of working out the right amount of force, which requires some patience and several tries. I think this is the real problem: screws sticking to the plastic. Maybe the screw well wasn't wide enough, or maybe the plastic holds the screw too tight. That's not how Phillips screwheads work. They don't just magically rise up, they slide because of torque. If you're applying enough torque that it slips up then you're applying enough force to strip the screw.The driver needs to move "up" before slipping out.

Hence why I suggested using hex nuts. Common, and less likely to strip.With common screw heads it is likely that the user will be able to easily find the right screw driver. But with other screw head types (and there are many) there's little chance the user will already have the proper driver.
Using screws with some non-common head type and not including the respective tool reads a bit too much like "we don't want you opening this device", which is not really true for Pandora/Pyra.

It's not a symptom, that is the problem. The real problem is simply that the screws are too easy to strip, either the head or the threads. The cause of that problem is kind of nebulous.Could be the problem is solved by changing the thread count, or the shape of the well, or adding lubricant, as you've suggested. We don't know if any of those things would help until they've been tried, and they could add an additional cost somewhere.the screw stripping issues are only a symptom of this
