Production Status

so the question is, are any getting built and sent out this week?

Maybe some of the ones we can fix ourselves. For the rest: Read up above. As long as no nubs arrive in Texas, we won't get any boards.
OK, so we are actually waiting for the nub-company testing and fixing all nubs, sending them to the board company, the board-company soldering to the 200 boards (they are so fast, it's amazing) they already prepared and then testing those boards. Amazing, with a bit of luck, production might start again in about 2 months.

Is the company in texas using the time to do all those time intensive testing of the boards already produced? That should be possible without the nubs as well.

Yeah exactly. The way I read it is:
  • Waiting for boards, no idea when these will arrive. Could be 2011.
  • Still have 250 cases, no idea whatsoever when the rest will arrive.
Conclusion: everything goes smooth and matters are really speeding up.

It feels as time until delivery is increasing rather than decreasing. Last month the delivery felt so close. Right now, I just don't know anymore... :(

Well, I'd rather seen it that Germany had lost - don't care about football, but living right in the city beneath the large place where they have a big LED screen for all those football-crazy guys to watch... it's really loud and getting on my nerves :)

I used to live in a flat overlooking a load of pubs in a city centre (Birmingham) and I bloody hated the noise when the pubs used to close at 11pm. I simply could not go to bed before 11:30pm any night of the week because the noise was crazy. It got a bit too much to be at work at 6am.

I personally can't understand why the English thought that they had any chance against Germany, they couldn't beat third rate teams like the USA.

I always wonder where you guys get your estimations from.
The company is already testing the nubs, so the first batch might even arrive in Texas within this week.
Why do you know there are 200 boards ready and just waiting for nubs? I didn't tell any number, in fact, I don't know since I haven't asked anyone yet.
Could be 200, could be 500, could be 1000.

The company in Texas could produce 200 boards per week so far, including testing everything and soldering the parts (also the nubs) to the board. That was the lowest number they could do.

Now they have tested and ready-to-nub-solder boards lying around... I guess this should go faster than 200 per week, eh?

It might take one or two weeks until production resumes - but I doubt it will take 2 months.

Boy, those "out-of-the-blue" estimations are really annoying - as a lot of people do read them like they are official. And officially, I don't do any estimations since I really don't know.
Please try to NOT make any guesstimations. People will most likely catch them, confuse all of them and make flamethreads once again. We had that a couple of times already.

Yes, we would rather ship all the remaining units this week. But what should we do - send you all broken units so you have them earlier? But without replacing them, of course, as that would cost money and time. Is that what you really want?

Sure. They are only waiting for the nubs.

Tell me about it. You guys officially guessed you would ship in December 2008.

But what should we do
This is actually the main source of my frustration. There is very little you guys can do. Progress is out of your hands now and some of the parties involved have proven to be unbelievably slow.

This is why I believe you guys will fail to ship all 4000 units this year. I challenge you to prove me wrong :)

Yep. And since we were wrong a couple of times, we stopped doing them :)

Oh, I'm pretty sure we can manage that :)

You have no idea how much I'm looking forward to that. Anyway, thanks for the info ED. At least we now know what steps we are waiting for.

i think that when we can finally hit a smooth production run with problems ironed out it will all be quicker. we were naive in thinking that the first assembly run would be perfect. you cannot predict problems without large runs and now we've had that and theres been a feedback loop to iron out these problems. i fully expect there to be more problems coming up between now and the end of the 4000 that stop production in its tracks but hopefully it should be for shorter and shorter lengths of time.

the problem with everyone on this project the whole way along was that we assumed each step to be so much easier than it actually is without throwing endless cash at it. we were all very very wrong in our expectations and we couldn't have ever known what we were getting ourselves in for. we do know a few things though: a) its not vapor which is a massive confidence boost for many, B) its got a whole lot of potential as seen in all of the many videos, c) its divided a lot of opinions and raised a lot of passions, the mark of anything significant and d) we've barely even scratched the surface so far and there is so so much to do. there has been no point along the way with this that i haven't thought the wait would eventually be worth it and thats still the case. if you can do the things you want to with something else then maybe you should move on, but getting upset to the point of cancelling because something you know you want is taking longer again is silly because you know you will either regret it or just have to wait even longer for something similar to come out.

You are annoyed of my out-of-the-blue estimations? WTF. That's how I keep myself motivated. For nearly two years now, I'm trying to guess how long it will take till I get my pandora. Everytime I do, you tell me I shouldn't be that pessimistic and guess what? I've always been overly optimistic.

the evaluation on number are maybe far off, but the "two months" evaluation have been proven more precise than almost all other evaluation up to date...

Rather like the Aussie cricket team then ;)

As you could see on the "one-nub"-Thread, a lot of nubs had problems. We shipped them back to the company that produced them and they found the problem (it was a tolerance problem). As it was their fault, they apologized a dozen times and are now testing each one of them and repair the broken ones for free. Since most nubs are fine and only a few need to be fixed, this should work out pretty fast. Another issue solved.
...

Guess I missed a threads talking this, but last I remember reading was the NUB company that made your original 'custom nubs' went out of business, so I assume then you guys found a suitable replacement company?

^ Yes they did. Btw, there has been some more discussion on the German forums. The nub company is pretty embarrassed about that mistake and fixes the nubs for free of course.

Good to see, that things get more "flushy" after this trial-and-error-marathon. :)
It sounds like the OPT is not the only one, who learned some stuff. Somehow it feels like the Case and the Board Company do this stuff the first time

As the next 3000 buttons will not be painted, this issue is also solved.
Please make sure that they really don't paint the Buttons this time. ;) I remember that they also had these order the last time so I still wonder why they ignored this. AFAIK they also painted the D-Pad and the Action buttons which is actualy quite uncommon, the Company should know that.
I just hope the communication issue is really solved now. ^^"

No comments from OPT :(

OMG! OMG! OMG!
No reply within one hour! Those guys really must suck! I would sue them immediately!
They really need to be up 24/7 and rather check these boards to reply!
Bad thing might be that no more Pandoras will be finished since they can't build any when they have to browse the boards all the time... but who cares!
</sarcasm>

Fight rudeness with rudeness. I'm sure victory can be yours but at what cost.
