wow looks like bilinear filtering of texture on the game..

yes that's surely filtered, it looks like n64 ?!

Texture Filtering?! impressive.

Keep in mind that ground texturing is done only in one plane. This is special case and could be optimized probably for higher speed.

A) I doubt that is a GP2X screenshot

B) The GP2X has power out the wazoo compared to other consoles (bought Need For Speed porsche unleashed for my brothers GBA SP, it was actully playable, it was an ARM processor at 16mhz, imagine what 200mhz could do with some blitting help :D )

C) Isn't mode7 for the SNES? if so, please stop now.

D) A lot of good 3D can be done in Software, especially if it is rendering to 320x240

E) I like the Pocketeers 3D engine, if they could be persuaded, we may see Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 3 on the GP2X, they might be able to swing it with EA if: 1, volume warrants it; 2, fears of pirated games are assuaged; and 3, if the pocketeers would get hooked on the GP2X's power and push for a port on their own merits.

Even if that wouldn't happen, they could port it so we could use the PC files, you can buy whole collections of NFS games for like $20 a lot of places retail.

No, SNES was the FIRST to use Mode 7. After that, Mode 8 came and took over (even on SNES). Mode 7 is used a lot in th handheld world. And I love Mode 7 (such an awesome name as well)

that would be quite a huge work ! or are the PC files so close to the DS files ?!

They aren't and nubie's idea won't work. I'd love to see Pocketeers on the 2X but they don't own the rights to NFS. Also, as far as I know, they are out of doing EA stuff for the moment. They did NFS MW GBA but the DS version was done by someone else (it's crap). They are now working on their own series of DS, GBA & phone games called "Beat a Friend". It might be possible to persuade them to port those to the 2X but it would have to be worth it for them.

Crazy Kart is pretty rapid on my Axim, Plays really nice too, As has been mentioned it would have been better with MP but there are a nice selection of tracks and characters to keep you going for a while, The game is pretty much Mariokart in 3D and plays much like that game too.

A single player game needs character and originalty these days to make up for a lck of MP. Personally I'd RATHER see the game step up and be that well made than have Multiplayer on a system that dosent have a built in set up for it like the DS or PSP.

I never said anything about the DS.

The DS has hardware accelaration, the GBA does not have a 3D accelarator.

I was suggesting that they move their 3D engine (NOT the NFS lineup necessarily, however cool it would be).

The GBA has an ARM processor, the GP2X has an ARM processor, the work The Pocketeers have done making a really good 3D engine for the ARM architecture would be invaluable to the GP2X.

What they have shown themselves capable of is truly astounding (especially on the GBA's 16mhz ARM), maybe when we get the HH (pure hardware) devkit finalized we should get them a GP2X, then they could put out the engine for game companies to develop with.

I mean it would be helpful for the GP2X to have a slew of original 3D games, FPS, Adventure, racing, sports, all its own to help get the word out. A "killer app" set of games, if you will.

Using the amazing engine from the Pocketeers would certaintly only help the GP2X.

I just was viewing some videos of those gba's games.

Time for some math.

The GBA has screen of 240x160 resolotion = 38400 pixels

The gp2x has screen of 320x240 = 76800

So the gp2x needs 76800/38400 = 2 times more pixels to be drawn.

But the gp2x cpu runs at 200MHz and the gba at 16.8MHz = 11.9 perfomance advantage. Assuming the gp2x's screen needs twice the load it is still over 5 times more perfomance per pixel than in the gba. This is not counting the second gp2x's cpu or the higher clockrates (+266MHz).

So assuming the second Arm9 core of gp2x could add just 20 percent of perfomance and with clockrate of 250MHz we could get 9 (or more) times per pixel advantage over gba!

The link to the those gba's awesome 3d videos can be found here.

Assuming my puny extrapolations are correct to a degree it would mean at least PSX level quality for 3d games.

mighty fine crunching you have there. I guess this could be right, but are the gp2x and the gba ARM processors the same (excluding mhz)?

No. The gp2x is using variations of the ARM9TDMI and the GBA has the one based on the ARM7TDMI. Not that they are effectively very different but the gp2x's ones are certainly more advanced. They have caches, a mmu, 5 stage pipeline instead of 3 and other improvements (more info can be found here).

I was amazed than the Arm series of processors were somewhat isnpired by MOS Technology's 6502.

Anyone know what frame rate the gba version runs at?

This would be pretty freaking awesome on the gp2x, the graphics would amazing. Some one needs to get this on my gp2x.

Yes, but you forgot we also have 64MB of SDRAM to play with, and the memory bus is undoubtedly faster.

So, yes everything you say, plus some.

I would imagine just running a sound core on the second processor and using 200mhz (I imagine some games could even be underclocked :D ) would be more than enough for many games.

I want to see some special effects, like the light trails on the tailights in Ridge Racer 4.

I really think world-class programmers could only help.

Since they are in the UK, maybe Craigix could send a test unit round or something to garner interest in the console.

We are looking to begin licensing our technologies to third party developers and publishers very soon. If you are from a company interested in using our ground breaking 3D technologies in your next hit game, then please send your details to enquiries@pocketeers.co.uk.

Maybe we could make a donation pool together?

Allan.

Um... I guess it'll be pretty expensive... I love Pocketeers and I'd love to see their games on the 2X (Beat a Friend... lol ) but it has to be worth it for them. 8000 units sold isn't quite enough but if the GP2X continues it's success it might be enough in half a year. Since their new game is an independent development, maybe they'll do a GP2X port to test the waters. Might also depend on how simple it is to port it.
Licensing the engine does not get us anywhere since we'd still need someone to develop an actual game.
