All you seem to talk about is "I would like....", "I wouldn't like........". It sound like all you seem to care about it yourself and not what would appeal to the target market/audience the pandora is being designed for. Seriously the handheld is not being made for you alone.

Starting your sentences with the first person pronoun "I" doesn't really add credibility to your arguements because immediately people would know that you are talking about yourself, your personl preferences and not what would be best for everyone in general. You can't expect every aspect of the pandora to be catered to your needs.
Right... And if he said "buyers" you would say he was wrong, coz your a buyer, and you don't agree with him, if he said everyone or most, and so on... He states his opinion, which he does well.

Like i suggested before maybe a competition should be held to design the pandora, i am sure we would see some very interesting results. Criag can set out the dimensions, so designers can base thier designs on that ensuring the any submited design will already be in some way compatible with the current hardware.
there was a thread about the possible designs of the Panda way back. And guess what? The design that most thought was best, wasn't a clamshell. But that one was designed with 1 purpose only. Games. Emulators, and games made for the device. If i remeber there was a slide out keyboard added, but for simplicity and patent issues a simple touchscreen keyboard could been used. Not to mention how much cheaper that would have made the unit.

Yeah, thats your opinion. And just as you and all your friends go bashing everyone for not having been able to try it since it doesn't exist, or not having made a mookup, on and on, all the yapping. Exactly the same applies to you guys. The design isn't finalized. any mookup you did make might be far enough from whats going in to production to make our test completely invalid, and thats the way its going to keep on being up until its retailing. And, add to that, someone like me, that would only use it for gaming, and MP3's, i wont be buying something where they compromised with the playability. Since the design in my opinion is nothing but a big compromise to make a UMPC with a few "nostalgic gaming touches to make the GP32X community buy in to the frenzy"... Well, lets put it like this, how likely would you be to buy something you think wont do what you want it to do, without trying it out first? Sure, Craig&Co could ship out a box, along with a return shipping slip, and a statement "return it in 14 days, and you wont have to pay any fees" but how likely do you think THAT is?

I think this thing have a HUGE potential, and I'm still around, simply due to the faint hope that there will be a none clamshell version catering better to my needs in the future. There is no doubt the community has what it takes to make the device useful, and the hardware platform promises so much..
I don't think we need to go in to what my needs are, we went over that already.
B!

LOL, whats with the I..,I....,I...?
Because I'm giving my opinion, so if anything I should be talking in singular rather than sprouting it as a fact (imagine "everyone knows the design sucks" or something really provocative and not respecting of others opinions); I find that better than saying "it's how it is" who would be arrogant, i'd rather emphasize that it's my opinion; the I is like saying IMO in my speech.

Also... I'm no native speaker; so even if there is a clear grammar pattern in my speech, bare in mind that I'm not as fluent as most anglo-saxonic folks, I don't speak english on a daily basis and I'll apologize.

Wasn't that kinda similar to my argument previously? that people shouldn't be designing the handheld just for a elite who is satisfied with this design, but rather aiming at being seductive enough for the masses?

I'm not thinking of myself only, I'm thinking of things that would make it better, still, the "me/for me" parts are needed to be included since I can't talk for everyone. I don't have a single solution like "do it like this" or that, so I can only hope to inspire some people to rethink it, how they'd like and how the functionality could work better.

Already addressed this one previously; still I'm hopefully reflecting the masses reaction to the machine and what could make it sleeker, but I dunno. And rather than saying "do this this way" I'd want to see people saying "yeah, perhaps not the best decision, we could do this and that to make it better" and take it from there, not advocating the non-changing nature of the subject that most are going in, as if in "defensive mode"

Sure admittedly, we agree that it most likely won't change and thus "better start making myself used to it because that's how it is" and perhaps being defensive is best at this time, but I'm the opposite, while it's not being manufactured it's still possible to change, kind of thing.

My point is more "I don't think the path it's taking design-wise is the best" rather than "do it like this and this" (and perhaps that point got lost in the existence of examples of what would be sleek designs in my opinion).

Then again and regarding not adding credibility... A opinion doesn't need credibility; requires concordance, indifference or discordance.

I'd be thrilled to see that :)

Kinda like we see mock-ups for new DS's, PSP's and all that stuff, it would be nice to do a contest for this one; who knows, some could even sprout interest and hype from outside userbases.

Why do you go after one of the core features that distinguishes Pandora from all other gaming handhelds? The keyboard will be useful for all kinds of activities ranging from games to web browsing. Making it a standard feature will encourage the creation of software that benefits from its use.
Because I don't think I need that for gaming and that in the current form feels forced and ends up compromising the other components positioning.

My original point in reflecting upon that was a "for example" scenario (as is the touch screen one) it's not a "take it off" statement, I acknowledge a lot of people want the feature to make it worthwhile and wouldn't, for example vote for it to be taken away having that into consideration; I just think it could be better harmonized. (and would "vote" for that in a whim)
Alex. said:
Do you plan to use the stylus as a virtual hammer, or do your tapping needs limit on regular touching? Pandora will be small, and provided the clam hinge will be solid enough, there's no way you'll have any kind of balance problems using it.
Not at all (regarding the hammer), I just don't see much utility in a screen being tactile when it's vertical to me. It was merely a thought, I'd love touch screen, but I just don't think I'd use it much as it is now, not a really good position for me, neither is it on a solid enough surface (it's thin) that I'd use it for typing, or in games like in a DS, PDA, etc... not with the same comfort I think, at least.

This said I certainly feel the lack of such tactile feature (PSP for example, each time I mess around in XMB, I wish it was tactile); all this due to a different design approach to it.
Alex. said:
Be sure that their design budget is included in the price, especially considering that they don't sell by the millions. But wait, you already knew that, and what you really meant was
Of course they don't have the same budget, but they have to go against them anyway since they're gonna be judged besides them (like pandora is being judged as a DS lite clone when it comes to design) so... although you won't do 100 plastic pieces as concepts (costly as hell) you can still experiment quite a little.

I think GP2X is kinda pretty in black, for example; and it's budget is also nowhere close.

My point being... yes the budget and all that is more limited, but we could always invest more time (rather than money and personnel) into it, and keep a open-minded approach to it trying to come to optimal results, that would improve the product look and functionality in the end, IMO.

This is absolutely ridiculous. The design has been very nearly finalized for quite some time, and most people here either really enjoy the design or have gotten used to it. Craigix and Co. are not retarded. They're going to test everything and make sure it works well. Not just that it works, but that it works WELL.

As for aesthetics, how is Pandora any less attractive than the DS Lite? No, it's not a piece of modern art, but it's slim and functional. Anyone that's going to buy it isn't going to buy it because it looks pretty, but because they know what it can do.

And I don't understand what this infatuation with tablet screens is. I'd much rather have a firmly hinged surface in front of me than have to change grip with every application. And if you want th tablet mode, just lie the screen parallel to the lower part and grip it by the control portion.

The sales figures on your examples indicate the rest of the world thinks your suggestions totally suck too.

I can't grasp your conception, aren't you even trying to say that the design isn't bad, but rather saying tht I'm wrong because the examples I gave don't sell in the order of the millions per month? that if anything can be attributed to a lot of factors, independent to the design.

If anything, this might be badly received... but it looks like a chinese-made DS Lite clone to me; looks cheap. (sorry but there I said it) Do those sell like mad?
Everybody thinks those things look super futuristic and aerodynamic, nobody buys them because they completely suck to use and the design is the reason. Nintendo DS sales hit 20 million, profit forecast says 17 million by end of this quarter, they're fiscal first-quarter profit rose 10 percent on sales of the DS Lite. Net income climbed to 15.6 billion yen ($134 million) in the three months ended June 30, from 14.1 billion yen a year earlier and increased its annual profit forecast to 83 billion yen ($711 million), from a previous estimate of 65 billion yen ($557 million). Sales surged 85%. That is what's called a successful product design widely accepted and very, very much beloved. How stupid would a moron have to be to not want to copy that?

I would just like to point out that anyone who doesn't like the design is free to design their own, then put the Pandora guts into it.

If it shows overwhelming community acceptance, strike a deal to get Pandora Guts to put in your slidey keyboard case.

BE PRO-ACTIVE. Take the design specs and see what you can do to put it into a slider keyboard mockup, even made of cardboard or Styrofoam.

I am not criticizing anyone's personal preference or opinion (I hope), but what good is telling a bunch of people that happen to be satisfied (for the most part), that their opinion is less than correct?

If you want something different, go for it. If you can't afford to do this, try to convince someone with a design that is workable. Make it easier to agree with you, show that the design and execution can be cohesive.

Posting pictures of other devices and saying "do this" is not constructive. A drawing that can convincingly show how the battery, motherboard, Screen and controls will be attached, and mocking up what you are talking about would help us visualize.

I haven't seen a sliding keyboard executed in a pleasing manner ever. I therefore can't think that I want it on the Pandora.

Simple modifications, you want a tablet, take the screen and marry it to the unit, move the controls around and show us how it could work. You have to give someone the alternative. Show us that you have spent as much energy on Actual Work toward a real viable alternative as the people on the project.

I haven't seen a better option, just a lot of talk.

I hope some of this gets through. I personally would like to put a swivel on the clamshell, this way the screen can rotate 90° for Arcade games, can flip over tablet style for Touch-screen use, and some way to move the controls out to the sides of the screen, so kind of a transformer console.

My point is that if you want it, build it, you have personal free choice, you can't force your free choice on others (well, you can try, some people like being told what to think).

Consider this unit a Beta, or an Alpha, I don't think this is a large corporation, and I don't think that these guys have ever done something quite like this before.

The mainstream will not see this (and yes people that play video games are mainstream), the developers and the people who like nerdy, possibly not beautiful gadgets will love this. Look on Hackaday, I have never seen "finished" products on hackaday, I love everything on there and think it is beautiful. (personally I have little use for junk that is all show and no go, like the DS and PSP, all that potential, and yet the focus is on aesthetics and no place to plug in a keyboard, not enough memory to properly browse the web, no powerful OS, not enough keys).

Maybe if you start thinking of this as a beginning, and not an end, then you can get with the program and start trying to design the setup you want.

Put your ASS where your mouth is (not like that), these people are spending of themselves and their money, and putting their reputation on the line to put out something that they believe in. You voicing your opinions until we are nauseous doesn't convince anyone. Put out a design that the electronics can be put in. It is just some plastic and buttons, and some ribbon cables. You can mock it up and make it good. You can show a real product instead of ranting on and on and on.

If it comes out, then what? Have you got a plan to change it into what you want? No? Why are you here? Are you going to convince them by typing away all the time on these forums? I doubt it. Why hang around? Will people see you comment and magically realize that it was ugly the whole time (and bless you for making them realize it, because 'gasp' they almost bought a handheld that lacked a cohesive design goal, a fate worse than death)?

I love it the way it is, I don't give a crap who might be scared by buttons (see the "don't panic" thread, a clear jab at the technically illiterate).

DS sales are a false premise, for a pro-reason to copy the design. closed it might be a clone of it, but it also doesn't have the same harmony when open, not even close... seems forced the amount of things in there. And that's the real problem with it

DS lite is fine for me, for being simple with their features (thus not looking bad) but pandora does, for me. Pandora by comparison seems like a DS Lite gone wrong with features cramped in every corner; lacks balance and I think there's features prejudicing others.
nubie said:

yeah because if the masses don't like the design that's what they'll do.

That's a false premise, and most people here don't even have the knowledge to do it right; and if I or other guy do it right from ground (meaning doing custom plastic parts)... on a single model I'll be spending a lot more money than the price of a pandora.

And don't come to me talking about that portable genesis you have in the sig, sure it's portable and does the job, is great for a homemade effort; but design-wise... it's ugly, and not professional/sleek-looking in any way.

Because this is the thread for it and I'm not satisfied?

You're the ones I don't understand, going balistic about it, if you're satisfied... you at least know this is how Pandora will look in the end (so you're already in a better position than I am, regarding of what you'll have in the end)... but at least let me complain and say what I think.
nubie said:

Either you agree or disagree, I'm not going to have loads of work on something that might as well be helpless. It's not like I have a lot of time, I'm not currently in vacation or something.

And If I was to do it, I'd do it right, not with paper boxes glued on, If anything I think glued boxes would be amateurish and wouldn't get the point across when I'm talking about a device's sleekness.
nubie said:

Didn't say "do this" more like, this would be a better place to go with the device; in short... I was trying to question basis decisions of the design. The rest is not up to me.

It's not like you guys didn't understand my vision by reading so don't blow it that way on me; I'm not even the only guy with this opinion, jeez.

Regarding stuff like the components fitting, they can fit as well in the current pandora as any other device who has the same inner size for the pieces, so it's really a no question; I'm not doing the design for the device (nor do I have those measures) so really, if someone was to do that it would be who's designing the pandora currently; saying that to me it's running from my main point imo.

I already expressed my idea of alternatives, no point in trying to rendering my opinion useless by demanding this stuff.

If I can't flip-over tablet style... the touch screen will be pretty useless to be.

On arcade games, yeah that would be nice, but I'll live; it's not like I used to turn my TV 90 degree's on console shmups.

Still, nice idea to be evaluated, shame Pandora is pretty much finalized.

Why not trying to make a balance between the two of them then?

Sure a lot of the concepts are just that, over-experimentalist, but they're experiments just the same.

Why being satisfied with a so-so design when you could have both? that's my point.

I wouldn't be saying this in this thread if I wanted pandora to fail or sell less because of this thing I consider a issue; so really... I know they're spending money, I think i'll be a good device, but I think the design is not. It's simple, and has nothing to do with that.

I'm asking the extra mile on this one, not bashing them.

Also... I'd give my opinion and go away, but I feel like you guys are trying to refute it and come on top (as in "I had the last word") I don't care about that, but when you're responding to me like this I have to answer.

Ugh, that thing in my thread was not "designed" I used a hacksaw and an afternoon so I could play some retro games in semi-portable fashion.

I did go through 2 iterations, I cut the wings off and moved up the controls. Call it an experiment in my ability to fit a Radica motherboard and LED backlight inside the existant Audiovox case. If I had to compare the current look I would say the controller bits look like a codpiece. Not flattering at all. I learned something in the process, and I got ideas on how I might like a second version to go. It is in my sig to give people ideas about things that they could try with a hacksaw, dremel and soldering iron.

I am not "sending you away", but I just can't take you seriously if you refuse to have the balls to stand behind your idea. Waving your hand and saying that they should "steer this way" isn't a collaboration. Is there a budget for the physical pieces and design work that would make your ideas feasible? I doubt it. Would the target price increase to an unacceptable level (and thus not appeal to those you are suggesting it should because it will then be unpopular for its expense, not its design)? I personally think so.

You have no proof that people like your idea less than their idea. You haven't done extensive research, and considering the population of planet earth, and the target sales of 10s or 100s of thousands, I doubt you could turn up a convincing market research with a reasonable budget. There just isn't any way to contact these people.

You never answered the question about your plans for the future. From the others I have seen I could assume that your plan is to stay around harassing the folks who bought it until it is out of production, and then ream the new console.

The technically illiterate wasn't at all directed toward you, but toward the people you want the console to appeal to, who it wasn't designed for, and who we don't care if it appeals to. Yes, I said it. If this device did everything you say, could a million units be built even? I doubt the capitol is there. Call this an exploratory limited release. As such, don't just give up on the design, if you are serious start helping, if not, shut up.

Edit: There is nothing wrong with the iterative process, go see some of Tim Hunkins work: The Secret Life of Machines or this video for Black and Decker employees http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2294060756803022552 Perhaps some would call his creations ugly, however I and the many people who frequent his establishment and hire him for consultant work seem to think otherwise. And seem to quite enjoy his creations. He is in fact living off of the proceeds from that pier arcade according to his website.

Just because you are closer to the iterative process and it is seeing a limited release it is a bit raw for you(?) or the mainstream consumer. Edit2: just to clarify, the limited release will check how well it works, if it doesn't work then it will be changed. If the people are pleased with it then it will be finalized as the first model of the Pandora. If enough people are pleased with it that the design team and backers reach their (unknown) sales goals, it is a success. It doesn't need to change the world, just meet some fairly loose and generous sales figures.

I am the true fool here, I can ignore you with a simple mouse click, I think I will find the button. Cheers, I hope you find something productive to do with your life.

Man, those are some impressive walls of text you guys are erecting. Let me again point out that whatever your position on the aesthetic merits of the Pandora, the hardware layout is no longer up for debate. All the important bits are going to end up pretty much where they are in the latest renders. You can love it or hate it, but that's how it is.

However, the cosmetic stuff is not yet set in stone (I think). If you have some constructive comments about the keyboard font or some fine-tuning of the case appearance, that could still be helpful.

Right. As if there ever was a time when this issues were addressed. No, the argument for keep arguing about the design, and functionality is still "for rev 2" and nothing else.

I've been watching the development of this for a while and have been fairly satisifed with things said and done. I did have an idea however that I don't beleive has been sugested. What if the keyboard was "backlit" as in the characters would light up. This would be beneficial when using Pandora in a dark enviroment (the principle is the same as some cell phone keyboards). I know some will say that the screen will emit enough light to see by but I would beg to differ if the screen is fully folded out and isn't pointing towards the keyboard. If not then what about a simple LED that shines out on the keyboard (right under the LCD but on the bottem half [guts half], not top half [screen half])

Hmmm, you must have missed the extensive discussions about.. backlit keys for the pandora, and other keyboardy goodness!!

Right, and it's good for what it is... but since you suggested a redesign "custom based" was simple and all that... I had to cover my bases so you couldn't suggest "that" even if you wanted to.

I stand behind what I said; asking for more and saying that if I don't do it I don't stand by what I said... it's just running away from the main point if you ask me.

It's not like the guys doing the design said they are looking for stuff like that, and like I said... I have no time.

Thus... doing a post saying what I think is one thing; going all out loosing my time for no good reason is other.

I didn't say I have (proof), still I believe the pandora looks awful now and that a good design could change the public (outside of these forums) perception to it.

It's my opinion, and I never claimed it to be the truth of the universe.

You never answered the question about your plans for the future. From the others I have seen I could assume that your plan is to stay around harassing the folks who bought it until it is out of production, and then ream the new console.
heh?

Like I had nothing better to do. I even told you that once it's out there's no point in me talking bad about the design on the forums, it's not gonna change; also... I only talked about this in DESIGN threads. Am I harassing who? :/

I think you're going the wrong way about things, keyboard was a example about how it is currently feels too crowded for it's own good.

There's solutions without taking it.

You have too many quotes in your previous post (#587), The forum can only handle a certain number of quotes in a single post, And you went beyond that limit.

is this thread a candidate for the "longest posts in a tread Contest" ? ;) Well, in a discussion about Design, a picture says more than 1000 words, so maybe everyone could draw what he wanted to say about Pandora Designs? ;) Just a suggestion. ^^

I myself don't mind the design, it's a bit weird, but i kinda like a bit weird considering i am playing older games, i like to feel like im holding an older classical looking item i guess..

It depends on what it can actually do weather or not i buy it.

I love it!! I have always liked 'matt black' and it's coming round again, you'll see!!

In terms of it's layout, they have really given some thought as to what each type of emulator needs - If they can really cram all that in, and make it work, then nuff respec' !! All credit to them !!

I will be buying one!

well theres two sides really to me

i like the design the DS lite look is great, means you can pack loads of features in there, have a decent sized battery have the screen at the angle you want. i think the option to plug anything in like it looks, sounds promising too.

but the down sides are that the controls are way too fussy, if a guy off the street picked one up he'd either think it was an e-dictionary or a mini computer/pda. it doesnt really have a gaming feel and the ds look might bring bad publicity

the keyboard in the prototype looks iffy too... it deffently should check out some of the pdas with qwerty keyboards as the flat look may hamper the use of the keyboard. give each key a raised edge or middle.

i hope the gui looks good thats all i will say cause that really is make or break for me.. if the gui sucks i wont touch it.

I design home theater systems in Sun Valley, ID. It is not unusual for a client to spend $60,000+ on just components. At that point the design process is already half over, I've made sure the components are exactly what will benefit the environment acoustically and that they don't have a negative aesthetic value. Then things progress from there with actual fabrication. The funny thing is that when it's finished and looks great, it is not “wow this looks great” but rather “Wow this sounds great” that people ALWAYS tell me.

The point is even with great aesthetic value being hugely important it is more important for maximum functionality to be emphasized in design.

This is most clear when putting together a true audiophile grade listening room. ALL the time the viewing pleasures received from looking at the components take a back seat to listening nirvana.

Little over a year ago a man spent a tad over $250,000 on MBL Reference components, amazingly enough with the sheer beauty of the Radialstrahler he never mentioned looks at all, just sound.

I like the design, I liked DaveC's idea a little better and I think a little work on an idea like that could generate some very pleasing results. However I think on a functional front Craig&Co. have gone above and beyond. Also I know that a little refining on the final product will take place, and the actual build will generate a better looking product. It always does. -CB
