I noticed something about the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. There was an option for 'autoplay', to skip gameplay entirely. I guess this isn't particularly distressing for a visual novel, but back when this series first debuted, it was thought of more as a lawyer sim than a visual novel by Americans, simply because we didn't have the term 'visual novel' back then. People actually thought the gameplay was cool.
I mean, I'm getting off topic here, but this isn't confined to just VNs. Games like Red Dead Redemption and The Witcher 3 have the option to skip combat too. It's not that I'm worried that people are forgetting what video games are about, I'm more worried that video games as a genre are dying, especially single player. People who would play by themselves would rather have kinetic VNs than games.
I dunno, I'm probably just too focused on the wrong things.
