Nintendo 3DS

I got to play about thirty seconds of Heroes of Ruin at PAX East 2012- it was gorgeous!

I grabbed Colors! 3D about an hour ago. It's every bit as amazing as the DS homebrew original was, although it unfortunately lacks pressure-sensitivity, as I expected it probably would. Thankfully, you can manually set the brush opacity in order to get the same effect, so nothing has really been lost - it's just got a slightly different way of doing things. I like how the layers are useful for both 3D and 2D art, too. The ability to output at different resolutions is greatly appreciated, too - some of them are higher than the 3DS' native resolution, even (for example, if you're painting in Widescreen mode, you can choose to output the resulting image at 1600x960). The level of detail that you can go to is very high indeed.

I also grabbed the DSiWare game, I Must Run!, which is brilliant fun. :D

The system update which adds folders for organising your home menu, enables patching for retail games (meaning the Mario Kart 7 shortcut glitch will be fixed, soon), and re-jigs the eShop a bit went live yesterday. I must say, I like the folders and their functionality, but wish that there were some more options for how they look (as it is, they're always blue, and are marked with the first letter of the name that you give them - I hope at some point we can change the colours and give them pictorial icons from a "generic" set). Maybe some other time?

Also, there's a rumour going around that they might be releasing the long-demanded purple 3DS in North America, to coincide with the release of Mario Tennis Open in May.

I couldn't agree more. Hopefully in the next update? :)

AS a Nintendo 3DS Ambassador, having all the NES and GBA games in the menu made it pretty cluttered, the folders help enormously but they do look crap. Hiding away rubbish like the Sky Sports and other limited use apps is a win for me. I also put all the demos into one folder. The menu screen is now much tidier.

^ I put my Ambassador Certificate app in with my Ambassador games.

What I have now is five folders on the second page of the Home Menu, and a selection of icons (mostly the stock ones, but there are some changes) on the first. The first folder is for Game Boy Games, the second for Ambassador Games, the third for DSiWare, the fourth for 3DSWare, and the fifth is labelled as Misc, and it's for random things that I don't use as much so don't really need quick access to - like the Activity Log, which I do check occasionally for the fun of it ("I've put HOW MANY hours into that?!"), but which isn't vitally important to me. :p

The Health and Safety Warning icon is shuffled off all the way over at the other end of the menu, out of sight, the same as it's been since day one. :p I get the feeling that if I put it in a folder, then I'd actually see it more often!

The first menu page has the usual suspects like the Game Card button, Mii Maker, and the eShop, plus some utilities like an alarm clock (note: If you want such an application, go for the Animal Crossing Clock - it has a console-shakingly-loud alarm function), calendar, and calculator, as well as Colors! 3D. :D

Sorry for the double-post, but I just made a little discovery!

A change has been made to the camera feature, though I'm not sure which firmware update added it. As anyone who's tried taking photographs with the depth-slider set to off knows, if the 3D is turned off you'll only get a 2D JPEG version of the shot, whilst if it's on, you'll get both a 2D JPEG and an MPO containing the 3D version of the shot.

No more! It's now been changed, and you'll get an MPO as well even if the depth-slider is off! For those unaware of the difference this makes, it means that you can now take 3D photographs in direct sunlight (which is a condition under which 3D displays like this one don't work), which was almost impossible before, because you had to turn the slider off in order to see how your shot was going to come out.

Hahahaha...

Seriously, though; Some of my earlier photos were taken in such conditions, with the depth-slider off, and no MPO image was produced. :p Now it doesn't do that.

It's a real shame that most image hosts don't allow for the uploading of MPOs yet (it's not a 3DS exclusive format - it's an open standard for 3D photography), and that most forum software doesn't let you display them within the image tags (even though some browsers can display them and will simply default to one of the two contained JPEGs on 2D displays), or else I'd start a dedicated 3D photos thread. :p

AH! I didn't! Thanks so much! :D Now I can make this work!

Purple 3DS rumour confirmed - it'll be launched in North America on May 20th, just as the initial store listings had indicated.

Also: Previously unannounced 3DS titles to be shown at E3. Myself, I wonder if the rumoured and then debunked "Donkey Kong 3D" might be among them. If it is, I'm really hoping that it's really "Donkey Kong Land Returns" - and that the big flaw from Donkey Kong Country Returns (that of being restricted to playing only as Donkey Kong, which is not the case in any other game in the series) is rectified, meaning that the option to play as Diddy Kong is available. :p

My big flaw with DKCR was the mandatory waggle required to do things that where once button specific in the original games. Hopefully if they do make a 3DS DK game, they won't add in some broken touch screen controls for the sake of it, as DKCR was one of the best Wii games released, and sadly I never finished it due to very poor controls. :(

Chris

I've got high hopes that there'll be a 3DS game, at any rate - Donkey Kong Country Returns looked quite a lot like it was meant to be one (to the point that I'm still surprised that "Donkey Kong Land Returns" still doesn't exist  ), what with all the background/foreground stuff and having to pay attention to the depth and distance of traps in some levels.

Fingers crossed!
