MS-DOS game recommendation thread

But, like you I was never shown list comprehension or subroutines in logo

Some current LOGO implementation allows keyboard input, threads and much more.

BTW, why are we discussing LOGO in a DOS thread when there are linux implementations that could run on Pandora directly (like xLogo from angstrom repo)?

Just thought I'd add two games to the list (skimmed through the thread, didn't see them):

Simon the Sorcerer II

Point-and-click adventure game. Never played the first one, but at least this one was kind of funny. I think it works with ScummVM...?

God of Thunder

Nice puzzle-adventure game starring the Norse god Thor. Now in freeware! Highly recommended.

Ascendency plays well at 1ghz

XCOM runs at 1ghz, but controls haven´t been stellar

Lands of Lore plays and looks fantastic

Jazz Jackrabbit is playable at 1ghz, but with lowest settings still has slowdown

Master of Magic plays well

Master of Orion is perfect

Master of Orion 2 at 1ghz is playable but seems a bit slow

Might and Magic 4/5 at 1ghz is smooth

Zeliard is decent, though controls are weird to map

Jill of the Jungle played fine for the five minutes I tried

Solar Winds 1 played well with some control mapping

I´ll try and hit up more as I have time

Not sure why, but dosboxfe likes to overwrite my custom config settings every time I change/exit a game which is annoying.

Aldo's Adventure, I had totally forgotten about this one :D

aldo.gif
I believe the version I played looked even more simple than this.

Games I enjoyed are:

  • Doom 1, 2 and Quake of course. I played so much Quake singleplayer. And I listened to the atmospheric NIN soundtrack so much. Oh boy.
  • Chasm, FPS
  • X-Wing (I have yet to play TIE Fighter)
  • MAD TV
  • Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Serrated Scalpel (German "S.H. und der Fall des gezackten Skalpells")
  • Every adventure Lucas Arts made
  • Command & Conquer (Isn't there an interpreter for the original files available?)
  • Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny (The Dark Eye Series; German "Das schwarze Auge: Die Schicksalsklinge"), a massive RPG

    dsa2.png
  • Goblins 3
  • Ultima Underworld (tried it on n900 dosbox, playable but difficult to enjoy)

+1 for TIM

Things I have never played, but am planning to are:

  • Schleichfahrt (Archimedean Dynasty) Because Aquanox 1 is a godlike underwater action game. Alas rather impossible via ARM Dosbox I guess

    1996-Schleichfahrt_.jpg
  • Tex Murphy FMV Adventures
  • Abuse. At least try to finish a few levels.
  • Fallout 1, 2
  • DreamWeb
  • Hired Guns

Just trying out a few more games

Dark Sun is playable but wasn´t really enjoyable

Duke Nukem Episode 1 works great with some control tweaks

Dungeon Hack intro is choppy, but gameplay with touchpad is great

Dune 2 was choppy but playable

Darklands should play great with a few tweaks to the controls

I clock my unit to 800 when playing Dungeon Hack and the gameplay experience is strikingly better. The intro to the game was always a little choppy even on my old gaming rig from the day. However, the small bump in CPU speed makes a huge difference in the load times and the small delays in gameplay when a new resource is being loaded.

Hi,

Most of these point and click games will run better within Scummvm. Cdogs and Jack Jazz Rabbit have specific ports.

I remember playing Quarantine with a 486dx33 with DOS.

^ You only get the full experience by playing the original Jazz Jackrabbit, currently, as OpenJazz, whilst good, is missing some features at this time.

The best DOS game i ever played is Albion.

And you can run the GP2X port of it with Ginge on the Pandora.

XCOM runs at 1ghz, but controls haven´t been stellar
No need for 1ghz. There is a port of X-COM 1 and 2. It's a static recompile for the GP2X and works with Ginge on the Pandora.

As soon as M-HT gets his Pandora, he's said he plans to complete the ports to Pandora to make better use of the bigger touch screen and full keyboard.

At least, that was his plan 8 months ago. Who knows what the plan is now.

then you might be interested in this save game editor I did for shits and giggles (and to change the character portraits, classes and names - the target was originally to make a gargoyles-version of albion together with a guy I know who worked on the doomed albion 2 project, but that proved to be way too much work just for a tingly feeling for two gargoyles fans ;) )
