Has anyone here ever gotten one of those home DNA tests?

Well, I finally ordered my AncestryDNA kit today. Should be here sometime before the new year. Of course, results take up to 8 weeks after I submit my sample. This is a busy time of year for them too.

Can't wait to run my raw data through codegen.eu and see all the cancers I will get.

dont do it... i just checked mine and apparently i have several changes that increase my risk of breast cancer! about the only thing right was a couple of mentions of reduced risk of baldness. 60 and a full head of hair. there are a lot of misleading things and if you want to see bad things then you could convince yourself easily. on a lighter note it says that viagra is more effective...lol

Meh, I couldn't wait. I opened it and used the activation code. Now in the next half hour I'm going to prepare my sample for shipment, even though I don't think I'll be putting it in the mail until Monday. Mail doesn't run tomorrow, of course.

Hmm, the mailman didn't take my sample today. I suppose it's because it was in my mailbox instead of the outgoing mailbox. I can't fit the sample package through the slot in the outgoing mailbox though. I'm going to have to get staff to open it for me.

Well, I put my sample in the outgoing mailbox, but the mailman simply didn't come by today. This is starting to get annoying.

My sample was picked up yesterday and is supposed to arrive at Ancestry on January 3rd. In the meantime, I've resubscribed to Ancestry so I can clean up my family tree. I don't want any of my DNA matches to see a messy tree.

You know, I've always said I have no family history of diabetes, but apparently my great grandfather Taylor had a sister who died from diabetes, according to her death certificate. Oh well.

My DNA has been extracted and has moved into the analysis stage. I know they said February 15th, but I think it could be a week or two earlier than that, based on other persons' reported waits.

SNPedia says Ancestry checks for the CHEK2 variant I've been wondering about, so we shall see, when I get my raw data.

Since my sample was processed on a Saturday, I wonder if it could finish analysis on a Saturday too. I got the message that processing was done around 11:45 PM last Saturday though, so it’ll be a while yet.

In the meantime, I’ve been worrying about my MTHFR gene, even though there’s no known family history of problems with it. It would explain a lot of my developmental and mental issues if I had a bad version of it. Just a primer, it’s responsible for metabolizing folic acid, and people who don’t metabolize all of their folic acid don’t get enough L-methylfolate. This feeds back into what @FBnil was saying about methylation and gene activation. MTHFR can screw with methylation, thus compromising practically your entire genome. That’s why it’s one of the most popular genes to worry about right now.

Apparently two people had their analyses finished and results ready today, according to the mega thread on r/AncestryDNA, but they both had their DNA extracted before mine. In one guy’s case it was on the 22nd, whereas mine was extracted on the 24th, so I guess I’ll get my results on Monday.

exactly. that site tells you of an "increased risk" but doesnt quantify that increase. misinformation and scaring people. the increase could double from 1 chance in a trillion to 2 chances in a trillion. Neither of which i would be worried about.

Still no results yet. I’ve decided if I do have a bad MTHFR gene, I’ll take folinic acid instead of methylfolate. Apparently lots of people have trouble tolerating methylated supplements. Folinic acid is just an easier to metabolize form of folate than folic acid.

My DNA test has moved into the final stage. According to some people, I could see my full results this evening.

Got my results. No family surprises. As for health-related stuff, I think I don't have that CHEK2 variant, though I'm not 100% on that because the data can be hard to interpret. I have two heterozygous variants in my MTHFR gene, but neither is the main one everyone worries about. I'll have to ask about it more on reddit.

Looking at it more closely, I don’t think I was tested for that CHEK2 variant, even though SNPedia says Ancestry tests for it. Couldn’t find the entry for it in my raw data. Guess I’ll have to save up for 23andMe.

My ethnicity results were unreliable too. Drumroll, please…
52% Sweden and Denmark
23% Norway
14% England and Northwestern Europe
10% Scotland
1% Germanic Europe

So, I’m a Viking pizza. My mom’s side of the family is like three quarters Germanic, yet only one percent shows up. Despite that, I do have a community from there. Anyone ever heard of Munsterland-Emsland?
