Gpx2 Unvailed!!

Hi,

Perhaps this relates to the screen that the original BLU used (no longer in production) vs the screen now used by the newer BLU+ models - which, as far as I know, are still in production?

A 3.5" QVGA screen is a very common LCD. Loads of Pocket PCs use them.

Very interesting reply at gpx2.com:

Dear customer

Thank you for your constant interest in our product line.
And i'm so glad to hear that you alread preordered gpx2.
Concerning the emulators other developers are making them.

A little pre-mature? Who is making them? Squidge? Rlyeh? Reesy? No oh they must be *assuming* that they will automatically make them when the unit is released.

Why didn't they just make it so the old ones work? That would make too much sense.

Since they said that SDK and firmware will be opened later, I'm guessing they're making the emulators themselves. Either that, or they're having someone else make them professionally. Let's just hope they're at least at making emulators as the homebrew developers are.

I suppose they have hired programmers because they know emus sell consoles.

Then, maybe the emus won't be free...

I doubt that. I think Nintendo would have a few words about that, especially with their emu patent thing.

Announcment on Linux Devices

After finally getting through 43 pages of posts phew. I'm impressed and I want one. All of the shortcomings, I disliked with the GP32 have been overcome. I wet myself. This has got me very exited. What are its major improvements.

1) A real OS with ooodles of developers: which means to me many more ports of good open source games, and some Apps thrown in for good measure, and maybe some more emulators

2) Not just a faster 33% faster CPU, but two of them(dual core), and with dual core entering mainstream, emulators will start to support them. The OS already does. Does it support floating point? If so thats a big boost. quake1/decent!! anyone. It will be my first time seeing two penguins and I'm already exited.

3) 4 buttons for some a minor improvement, for me a joy. no more assigning my keys :)

4) HOLD THE PRESS 32meg memory, thats like 4x what we have now, and rumors that you can have even larger. Well I think Linux may have a little breathing space :). Thats in windows 95 territory, and more memory always helps.

5) USB 2.0(oooh) is a godsend for transfering 4GB of Music/Movies/Games to this device. Hope they have a more standard cable.

6) It looks great, it looks great. it looks great esp in BLACK. with a ickle light for the battry awwww

7) Now with SD. I'm so happy I can weep. I felt like I was throwing money away on the old cards. Now I can use them with my digital camera, hell I can look at my photos from my digital camera on my GP32 and edit them. and cards of good value 1GB are available thats 10x that of a GP32 hold on I can thow away all my old cards, and just buy one to do the same job. Or pay a premium and get one 40x the size(I've gone weak).

8) SDL out of the box, now that is just wow, development kit ready to go. Common well documented games api.

9) Its still everything the GP32 was with nothing taken away.

For me I'm an easy sell this is everying I wanted and more, and have whinged and whined about in the past. In a choice between an ipod and this its an easy choice. The PSP is a fabulous bit of kit, better in many ways, but its proptiary firmware, and propriatory storage make it a no go for me, and expensive, will I look at GTA on the PSP and be jealous Oh Yes. Are the massive roxio hard drive video players nice oh yes indeedy. This is more I'm a happy bunny

The GP32 was the most powerful handheld in the marketplace, it does not have this crown, it was what inititally sol the GP32. The New GP does not have that crown, but what it is now is BEST VALUE of any handheld on the market, for anyone who uses a GP32 for what it does now, or anyone who would be prepared to hack there PSP firware :)

Well I doubt your doubt because:

Dear chis

Thank you for your interest in gpx2.
At an early stage we are going to release some games and emalator and then planing to make more.

Thank you.

Also:

Dear customer

Thank you for your interest in gpx2.
We will do our best to reflect your opinion on it.
And it would be much less then $200.^<^

Thank you again!

Does anyone think that it would be even less than around $170?

Oh, but that would require the USD to not tank against the EUR, GBP, KRW, etc.

So this means we will have to BUY the emulators? Bah. This also would mean they would be locked to the unit so you could never move them between units or if the unit broke you would have to re-register everything, meh. I went through that hassle with the Zodiac and it was a pain. Plus if GP ever went under and you bought a replacement unit you could not use your emus on the new system, you would lose them.

I guess that would be better than zero though. Hopefully it would get the open source emu writers interested.

So how much overhead does this Linux eat up? If you have a GP32 at 166 MHz and a GPx32 at 200 MHz wouldn't the GP32 be faster because it doesn't have a CPU wasting OS running?

Knowing linux if you have that running you may only have enough CPU left to emulate a Colecovision at fs3 without sound. Could you throw out linux when running an emu to make it faster?

gpx2's dual core CPU is similar to Single CPU 400mhz. (not tested yet)
and GPH has a plan to test it, then they will notice the result.

Will someone ban davec from this thread.

Firstly he calls me a 'retard' because i believe the likes of mega cd and gba will be achievable.

Secondly Calls me a 'kid' when i'm most likely older than he is.

Thirdly, is pissing everyone off with his innane ramblings, saying the same thing over and over again.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions on here, and you trying to beat those opinions down won't change that. Grow up, davec, your probably some spotty nosed little kid who spreads out his time between playing with his videogames and playing with himself.

ohhhhhhhhhh, thast cold

system intrigues me, though I think this one is a definite "wait and see." Just too much that we don't know about (how the dual processors will effect emus and homebrew, how easily ports from the gp32 to the gpx2 will be, if linux emus will really be available, etc).

I hope this is what we've been waiting for; the price certainly screams "buy me"

cold but fair, anyway i totally agree with you on the above. I'm not sure how anyone can actually predict how this system will run without it getting into the hands of a coder first.

I'm definitley in the 'take the plunge' camp.

To me, seems there's no choice but to buy the thing. Can't see how anyone on this board could think differently. And it's for sure sexy. Glad it's matte-finish (as I sit here smudging the hell out of my PSP just typing this..)

You may be right, but it's a bit unfair to point fingers without any real evidence. Perhaps they have employed somebody else to port; somebody Korean or whatever.

edit: I see this was already covered

Also, they have confirmed the unit will be black, which I am pleased about. Potential for different colours to be released in the future too. Maybe I'm just sick but I'd like to see this in fluorescent green.

Hi all,

Just one thing, every coders have thier sources ! It's easy to converte his own program and certainly increase it.

I've pre-order mine

Bye
JYCET

Its all speculation right now I'd suggest we all just wait and see what happens and not turn this thread into an brawl :)

I would however be interested to read Reesy views on the Gpx2 being a big fan of his megadrive emulator.
