For Anyone Who Cares...

Of course I WANT it to be a sucess, but the reality of it is I have serious doubts with the current GP2X hardware that it could get to the level of PSP SNES emulation. SNES is near perfect with full emulation which includes sound, DSP, and transparencies on the PSP. I am sorry but FS 3 and up with no transparencies and overclocked to 266 MHz with 30 minutes of battery life is just not playable to me. I always thought that the GP2X should have just used one core at 400 MHz ;)
Are you joking or something?

I get 45minutes at 266MHz out of 2 750mAh 5 year old ni-cd batteries.

I get 5 hours at the same speed with my 2500mAh ni-mh, I can agree 5 hours is not much, but I have seen similar devices chew even more battery power...

You must be playing with the sound off to get those kind of times. I don't play games without sound and that takes power to feed both speakers. Either that or my GP2X is busted. 2000 MAh Rayovac 15 min batteries last about an hour on the GP2X at 200 MHz and last 5 hours on my GP32 BLU. I hate those other batteries that you need to charge for 8 hours. It just isn't practical for me to charge for that long.

Well DaveC, I only have 1300mAh batteries here (Energizer), and they last well over an hour at 200Mhz with sound, so I'd suggest replacing your batteries as they simply can't sustain the power consumption that the GP2X requires. Try Ansmann or Energizer ones.

For anyone that wants to get rid of the bug that chops up sprites near the bottom of the screen, unpack the below archive to wherever you have SquidgeSNES installed. Note that this requires the full 0.34 version to work, so it must already be installed: www.squidgey.plus.com/squidgesnes034sp1.zip

well you do have one of those dodgy "First Editions"

you cant complain about a battery life of 1 hour when your batteries only charge for 15 minutes

edit: awesome squidge!

Awesome, now I think emulation of Super Mario World is perfect.
Thanks for the update. :D

squidge just released that, if you don't have it then that might fix it. hopefully it's just as simple as that.

Thank you for this excellent update, Squidge. Just so you know, it actually seems to fix several more problems than just the chopped up sprites issue - it both fixes graphical errors such as garbled sprites that affected several games (such as Donkey Kong Country 2) before and noticeably speeds up the gameplay of games like Donkey Kong Country 2 and Rockman & Forte. :)

While I am here posting this, I think I had better drop in a brief bug report for you. The issues detailed below appear to be exclusive to Capcom's Mega Man games, for some strange reason;

Firstly there are some strange graphical errors in Mega Man 7 and Rockman & Forte, which affect backgrounds and/or the word balloons used for character dialogue. The backgrounds display weird flashing colours in places (this particular issue seems only to affect Mega Man 7), and the word balloons are not displayed at all although the text meant to be shown within them is. Should you wish to observe these for yourself, they are easily encountered during the opening levels for both of these games.

Secondly, the games Mega Man 7, Rockman & Forte, Mega Man X, Mega Man X2, and Mega Man X3 run too fast in places! (Congratulations! ;)) On a non bug related note, all five of these games actually run at their full normal speed in places.

Thank you once again for producing such a well made emulator, and also congratulations on including support for the Capcom C4 chip used in Mega Man X2 and Mega Man X3 so early on in the emulator's development - it is very impressive. :)

the word bubbles in mega man 7 use transparency when they appear and disappear...i'm sure it's related to that.
I am not quite so sure - all items that use transparency in those games are rendered as solid in SquidgeSNES, but the word balloons simply do not display at all. If it were to do with the transparencies, logically they would be displaying but without the fading in and out as they do.

Long time reader, first time poster here ( and dare I say noob ).
First off great work squidge, you are the reason I've ordered a GP2X, it's coming tomorrow! :D

I've noticed a lot of people have been impatient with your fixs / updates, but to me your progress has been nothing but remarkable! Just a quick off topic question, is this talk of bricking on F/W updates really that common place? Or is it a load of B/S from people who didn't know what they were doing?

I can't see how these updates can take a whole set of batteries, it'd have to take 2 hours?!

Keep up the good work, and Star Fox will be a reality!

;)

Well, if you'll just take your lips off of squidges ass :p ......bricking the GP2X is not B/S from some noobs as you put it. It has occured a number of times (as I read throughout this forum) for no apparent reason, although it is becomming less common.

And welcome to the forum :D

Not just in Mega Man 7, it's also aparent in MarioKart.... 18fps 0 frameskip @ 266mhz. I didn't complete the first race as i was just looking to see if the game ran at all. :)

Dave, I have the exact same kind of batteries as you (2000 mah IC-3s) and mine last 3.5 hours on 200 mhz with full sound on (I've been using them faily consitently for a few days now, playing Falldown and they still say 'Full' in the menu). I'd say you just have a bad pair.

DaveC- LHC is right.

Nobody has been playing at FS3. Moreover, this emu has been in development for a very short period of time and is already very fast. Plus, your batteries are shit. The GP2X is very high drain. It doesnt matter if your batteries run well on a different device. I have some bog standard 2300mah Uniross one hour barge batteries and they work very well. Surely you can wait one hour.

Fair enough be pessimistic, but dont lie, and upgrade your batteries for gods sake.
