Dosbox Fun

An OpenGL Blood engine still remains the "holy grail" of build games. No one seems to know who precisely owns the rights to this game, and no one seems to know where the Blood source code even is.
This is a common misconception. Matt Saettler (a former Monolith employee) has got the source code (don't nag him for it), and the rights to the Blood source code are owned by Infogrames (Atari). Matt Saettler is fully willing to give the source code to Infogrames if they want it so it can be distributed under the GPL or whatever, so the only thing stopping a release is Infogrames.

Unfortunately Infogrames is an impenetrable fortress. I've talked to developers who have worked with them in the past and they all say that communication with the company was a total nightmare. Infogrames PR is essentially non-existent and all attempts to open up some sort of communication with them regarding the source code has been met with absolute silence. They simply aren't interested. I haven't given up completely, if anyone here knows anyone who has worked with them in the past and can give contact details of anyone who works inside it would be a great help.

That said, I think it's going to be a while till we see it, if ever. In the mean time reverse engineering the game and implementing it's features using eduke32 is probably the best bet. There is a WIP project which is looking promising called Cradle 2 Grave.

Really nice, Mr. Miyagi.

Well, if you don't mind testing stuff and are looking for ideas, I'd love it if you could test Star Control 3... ;)

I've been trying to get it to run in DOSBox but I can't quite figure out how to get it working yet - something to do with CD recognition.

hmmm I dont think I have Star Control 3 :( , only 1 and 2. but i know that it was ported to GP2X called "Ur-Quan Masters" where it worked really great.
if i remember correct then it was Senor Quack who ported it to GP2X, so if you'r lucky then maybe someone will port it to Pandora too. ;)

Edit
Found the old post from senior quack about Ur-Quan Masters to gp2x here:

^ That's a fantastic port.

I thought I'd try out SC2 and SC3 anyway. My SC2 files are corrupted, but I had success with SC3. It's a little slow. I went straight into melee combat, it ran at about 5fps. Playable IMO, but not very snappy. I persisted with Lucasarts Battle of Britain on the GP2X at a similar framerate, just because I loved the game so much. :) Incidentally, BoB will run like a dream on Pandora. I imagine SC2 will run nicely too.

Also tried Master of Orion, all good.

Just tried Star control 2 it runs perfect with 2500 cycles, it's an awesome game :)

I thought i had Starcontrol 3 somewhere cause i played the ported GP2X version, but i think i may have deleted it or something by a mistake cause can't find it now :(
yeah it's an fantastic port. :)

Ur-Quan Masters is the open source port of StarControl 2. No such port exists for StarControl 3, as far as I know.

Ok, I've got 2 more for you:

First is Gloriana (Elisabeth 1.) a trading Sim.
It runs ok with 2200 just stuttering once in a while but this is no action game, so it should be playable.

Gloriana 2200 Cycles

The other one is a Space Flightsim, called EPIC.
It is a very underrated game and as good as Wing Commander.
Runs great at 2200 and at 3000 would be really fullspeed.

EPIC 2200 Cycles

That reminds me:
Has someone Wingcommander 1,2,3 or X-Wing or Tie-Fighter at hand to test?

Oh. That information must have come to light since I last followed the sorry tale, which was admittedly some time ago. Bloody Infogrames.

EDIT 2: Gobliins 1-3, Jill of the Jungle
They will all be playable on Amiga/ST emulators and I'd imagine those versions were better than the DOS versions.
Horray for Jill and Hugo though! :D

The DOS versions of Gobliins 2-3 are actually better (more colors, speech,
animations, cutscenes, etc.), but the Amiga versions have FAR superior music (less tracks though).

All Gobliiins (PC&Amiga) games are supported by ScummVM, so they should run both really well on Pandora.

If someone wants a legal source for classic DOS games, i recommend Good old Games. I compiled a list of likely candidates from their site which might run well on Pandora. I'm going to test them for required cycles when I get some free time:

The two first X-COM games are currently available from Steam, but I hope they will be added to GoG.com in the near future (this would have the advantage of no DRM compared to Steam):

I'd like to second that request for TIE Fighter!

Hmmm - I thought someone had tested it and said it was unplayable, but I can't find it in THIS thread so now I'm wondering if I just had a nightmar e(I'd like to play it too). I should have A version of DOSBox and the DOS TIE fighter around here somewhere, but time keeps seeming to run out on me :(

Aren't these (and possibly others) actually Windows XP/Vista games though, in the incarnation that GOG sells?

I'm not saying I'm not interested - I am - but I'm not sure we'lkl be seeing them on Pandora any time soon :(

Most of the DOS games they sell are run through DOSBox.

And yes, GOG is fantastic.
