Caanoo - The New Gph Console?

I don't see why the different screen would force everything to be recompiled. It is abstracted in hardware: the display controller in the Pollux is separate from what they call the 'Multi Layer Controller' which generates the final image to be shown on the screen. Controls may be more of an issue for things which read the GPIO stuff directly rather than going through the kernel interface.

Because this screen is 320x240 and Wiz is 240x320. Programs running in 320x240 mode on Wiz may work but the ones that are using 240x320 directly in order to avoid tearing won't.

The F100's joystick was digital, this one's analogue.
Also (I never owned one), I heard that worked quite well on the zodiak, no?
But yeah, DPad would be better.

Neither sbock nor ED ever said this was analog. If it is that'll be another thing that makes it incompatible with some Wiz software, ie ones that are reading from GPIO rather than /dev/gpio. They can do SenorQuack's GPIO faking trick, but I'd be pretty surprised if they do. They could also output the GPIOs electrically (assuming the analog stick spits out pure analog values) with circuitry or a CPLD or something but I doubt they'd do that too.

Still, what I heard about the Zodiac was that the controls were generally poor for emulators, which is mostly what people play on Wiz.

This could be okay if released alongside the Wiz, but in replacing the Wiz they're making a huge mistake IMO. The dpad, OLED, and small size were the main things people liked about the Wiz... and GPH themselves claimed there was too little demand for a gaming F300, so why would there now be demand for this? Or do they think they're going to rock the handheld world by including an accelerometer? And why is wifi still external? That's another big mistake, software will not want to use wifi nearly as much if it's some optional feature. Add-on features rarely do as well as builtin.

You know the worst thing about this? For a pretty modest cost increase they could do a handheld designed around Samsung's S5PC110 instead and it'd completely blow Wiz away, hell, it'd blow Pandora away. They'd probably still dick it up with bad controls and a low resolution screen but at least people would have a reason to buy it. Even phones in China are using S5PC110 now (see Meizu M9)

EvilDragon wrote that it will be an analog joystick a few posts above. I changed my first post after his statement.

So they are rushing a new device out probably using another SOC. They of course won't bother to research it in advance, it's probably just MES's latest offering.
Yep :)

No. Not even close. They obviously use the same SoC (Pollux). And MES is sold long time ago...
Craig was pretty close. They used MES's latest offering... the same one. :)

What happened to MES anyway?

Ask Craig, he is the expert...

We think that CoreLogic is the new owner.

But the Pollux is not listed under the products...

Okay, great. This should be a massive complication then.

If new software IS required then don't expect any from me.

An analogue thumbstick on a device like this makes you wonder if GPH are thinking that they can get away with calling this a PSP/DS competitor and turn their back on the homebrew/emulation community?

It's not as if they haven't tried this route before

I quote some interesting infos/confirms from Anarchy (Spanish distributor / GP32Spain Admin). Translation by Google.

Good:

I some time ago that the existence of the console.
GPH has not wanted to launch a new more powerful console, since it would somehow abandon the Wiz users just a year after its launch. I personally would have seemed bad, really.
This console has the same hardware as the Wiz, but with 128MB, Display 3.5 ", accelerometers and vibration (in addition to having changed the pad, obviously). Come on, it is not intended for those who already have the Wiz, but will be an alternative for those who intend to buy it.

NOT WIFI. The WiFi dongle is the same as the Wiz and must be purchased separately. That is, the Wiz and Caanoo will coexist and most software will be compatible with both consoles without problems. With this release GPH he wants to focus on gambling and online downloads and reach a wider market than the Wiz.

They want to incorporate an OLED display, but apparently have problems with the manufacturer and are looking for alternatives. At the moment it is not confirmed whether it will be TFT or OLED.

According to information I have given the go. I have a 21-page PDF you sent me GPH on the console. When we take a look will give you more information (if it's worth, of course).

I have the hope that the stick works well, but we'll see. They have promised me a test unit for mid-July.

From the information given, are focusing to sack FunGP. They want to develop applications for both consoles both free and commercial and that everything is centralized in the App store. It also appears that they distribute to specific Wiz Dev Boards and Caanoo (picture attached) between some companies, and want to focus on the development of games with online features and multi-player, with a type system Xbox Live rankings.
They have also a definite date for the opening of the App Store for Europe: in August.

Looks like a BoB. You wouldn't dock the console but plug it in with an ext cable from the side. Would be nice if it also offers wifi, but if something like this is the only way to get wifi then.. well I don't think I really have to mention anything there.

Yes it's a Dev Board for Wiz and Caanoo that GPH will send to some companies.

An analogue stick. Seriously? They never cease to amaze me.

If it stays that way, it's a FAIL alright! Haven't they studied Pandora?

No D-Pad equals complete waste of time for emulatuion.

I totally agree, so what ED and the Wiz community should do (like they/we did with Wiz) is ask them (GamePark Holdings) to put a D-pad in the same way Pandora is has it...with dual analogue nubs and a a d-pad?

This is beyond futile, and this is coming from someone who loves their Wiz. Why remove the OLED screen, make it bigger and remove the D-Pad? What's the frigging point? And why discontinue the Wiz so early in its lifetime? Are they high?

it has already been said that gph are NOT discontinuing the wiz. the caanoo will co-exist alongside it and they will manufacture both.

i was hoping for a digital stick like on the neo geo pocket colour, but if its analog then yeah - uselss. what are they thinking?

I'm pretty sure the Wiz is dead actually. They won't be making it anymore.

Come on ED try and convince them to lose the analog stick and go with a dpad. It'll be better for everyone(GPH included)!

That is unless they actually want a massive failure on their hands.

Yes, yes they are!

That is the only way BS like this can keep coming to market.

If their not, they should start, because it could only improve the way they do business.

I can't tell you all how happy I am that I no longer have to depend on these clowns for my portable retro gaming needs. Even if openpandora had went down in flames, at least they fought the good fight.

GPH is completely oblivious to the needs of this community, and as such, they should be boycotted, and sent out of business. I'm sorry if my comments offend anyone here, that is not my intent. I'm just fed up with this mindless attempts at an open handheld system. I owned a GP2X, and loved it. That is how I came to the community, but sadly I sold my Wiz a few months ago, as it was a waste of my time, almost no improvements over the 2X.

I just want this community to be the best it can be. Good competition makes everyone step there game up, and everyone benefits in the long run. Even with over a year long plus of delays, and no telling when the remaining Pandoras may ship, I would still rather give my money to those guys any day of the week.

Sadly, the Pandora has done little to help GPH business model, so I don't hold out much hope for their future.

The Wiz is canceled. Only 100 available units are on the way to EvilDragon's shop.
Are you sure of this? Could be a punctual out of stock.
If were true GPH or distributors would have announced it.

I disagree, this is pretty much what happened when GP2X was discontinued. In fact, you'll recall that GP2X was made completely unavailable several months before Wiz could be bought.
