Since Bosbeetle is spearheading an effort to bring over the old game recommendation threads, I figured I'd get the SNES one started over here. Try to give a bit of information about the games you're recommending, instead of just providing names.

I guess I'll start, since I'm posting this. :p My recommendations are the same ones I posted on the other forums a while ago.

Donkey Kong Country 2 - Diddy's Kong Quest - Platformer - A highly-polished platformer, with a sense of humour where the cast are very much aware that it is a video game.

Mega Man 7 - Platformer - More Mega Man goodness, in a different vein from the X series. This is a continuation of the original NES games. If you like the Mega Man X titles, or platforming in general, you'll probably also enjoy this one.

Mega Man X - Platformer - An unforgettable platform game, filled to the brim with polish, clever touches, and an excellent soundtrack. It uses the same "Rock/Paper/Scissors"-style weapon system as the Classic series games do. A must-play! (If you like this, you may also like Mega Man X2 and Mega Man X3.)

Rockman & Forte - Platformer - A platformer from 1998, created to be "Rockman 8.5" - if you open the game in a text-editor, you will see this written down in there. It was Japan-only until a later Game Boy Advance port in 2002 (which isn't quite as good as the original). If you like Mega Man 7, you'll love this. Silky-smooth animation, perfect control, two playable characters with different abilities, great bosses, and an excellent challenge. There is a complete English translation patch available from AGTP for this game.

Sandra no Daibouken - Valkyrie to no Deai - Platformer - A very challenging platform game, in the one-hit-and-you-die vein, said to have been made by the same team who later made Klonoa - Door To Phantomile for the PlayStation. Available in English by the name of "Whirlo".

Star Fox - 3D Shooter - An atmosphere-packed shooter, inspired partly by the exploits of World War II fighter pilots, which follows the Star Fox Team (a group of animaloid pilots from another world) as they attempt to liberate their planetary system from the evil baboon scientist Andross.

Super Mario Kart - Racing - The originator of the "Mascot Kart Racer" genre.

Maybe I should create a list of these threads that might be pinned for easy reference :) Thanks for starting this one, having all this emulation at the tip of your fingers can be very intimidating, these threads make for a nice start :)

Without doubt Earthbound. It's a cartoony modern day rpg (ie: no swords or metal bikinis)set initially in a small town where a meteor has landed somewhere nearby during the night, and you decide to investigate with a couple of friends. I'd recommend trying this even if you don't really like rpgs, its off the wall humour and wacky enemies are really compelling. Wish I had the original cart, but sadly you're looking at £200 for a decent Pal copy these days.

Chronotrigger Time travelling rpg that needs no introduction

Legend of zelda: link to the past Hands down one of the finest games that I ever played during my youth. This has struck more of a chord with me than any other Zelda game since.

Super Probotector Rock hard side scrolling shoot-em-up from Konami. For some reason the Pal version removed the human player characters and replaced them with robots, not really a big deal as they look cool! Replaying this now, I can't believe I had the patience to master it on the hardest difficulty! Everything about this was right, the music, the weapons, the enemies, the birdseye mode7 stages, it is a cornerstone of the snes age.

Super mario world It was THE reason to own a snes, and it still is.

Yoshi's island I was afraid that this would have been too much of a step away from the mario mechanics initially, but it turned out to be utterly brilliant.

(Prometheus beat me to Mario Kart, but I have to add that it is still my favourite game ever. The times I've had playing battle mode are some of the best memories of my life)

Sunset riders A side scrolling cowboy shooter. A solid arcade conversion and tons of fun, YAHOO!

Rock n Roll Racing I've had both the Megadrive and Snes versions of this, and although I still own the megadrive one, the Snes had the better version due to the clearer music and speech. I love isometric racing games, and this is one of the finest examples. Still fun even to this day, especially in two player.

I agree with most of the choices already mentioned, particularly Chrono Trigger and Earthbound. Here are some other RPGs that I own and recommend:

-Final Fantasy 5: The highlight of this game for me is the class system. You are free to develop your characters as you like as opposed to FF4, where each character was locked into one particular class.

-Final Fantasy 6: Although you could not customize your characters to the same extent as in FF5, I feel this game has a much stronger story. Also, in my opinion this game features some of the most beautiful graphics and music on the SNES.

-Ogre Battle: This is the best strategy RPG that you probably have never heard of. The story progress differently depending on your actions and how you clear the various stages. There is also a very complex good/evil alignment system that dictates which of approximately 14 endings you obtain. I highly recommend this game for those seeking a challenge!

-The 7th Saga: This game is for hardcore RPG fans only as it is extremely challenging. You can choose 1 out of 7 characters as your hero in the beginning and later recruit a second character as your partner. Each character has different motives for undertaking the main quest so the story develops differently depending on who you choose. The characters you do not pick also become your rivals.

-Breath of Fire/Breath of Fire 2: Fairly unoriginal RPGs but well done, IMO. The hero can transform into various types of dragons and some of the other characters have interesting designs. The highlight of this series for me though is the fishing minigame.

-Illusion of Gaia: This is an action RPG similar to The Legend of Zelda series, but with innovations such as your character being able to transform into stronger, more powerful beings.

-E.V.O.: This is a very unique game based on the theory of evolution. Your character starts out as a simple fish, but as you consume other animals you can evolve different parts of your body as you like. You eventually move through time and your character will change into an amphibian, reptile, and mammal.

-Actraiser: A unique mix of side-scrolling action and simulation where you manage the population of different cities.

From the top of my head

Super Mario kart : see Prometheus post :)

Super street fighter II : legendary 2d fighting game

F-zero : mmm, futuristic race ?! with a music i still love..

Super Mario World : THE platform game who started it all : my older brother saw this and decided that our famicom era was over, and the super famicom era had come ! ;)

Secret of Mana 3 : good role/action game

Zelda : if someone doesn't know zelda.. what can i say ? ;)

From my childhood days :)

Donkey Kong Country Great Platform created by Rare

Chrono Trigger RPG mentioned above

Legend of Zelda, The: A Link to the Past Another great RPG

Super Metroid what can I say Super Metroid is an enjoyable futuristic shooter.

Sim City build your city and listen to the classic music

Super Mario All-Stars (Great Mario Pack)

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (This RPG I paid over £200 to get this imported to the UK as they never released in PAL) very enjoyable RPG. Battle system is so easy to use hours of gameplay.

Super Mario World everyone knows what this is.

Kirby's Dream Course a good golf game with kirby

Super Castlevania IV konami did a brilliant job with this one. Get the whip out and kill the enemies.

Final Fantasy 3 NTSC think it could be 5

F Zero The Music and gameplay were brilliant

Mario Kart (mario racer in karts use toad or kooper there the fastest overall - Handling is the best)

Street Fighter 2 2d fighter

Super Turrican, which I recently discovered, is the SNES version of the Amiga game 'Turrican 2' only with a different first level. It's very good and interesting to try if you like the Amiga version as if anything they have made it harder.

I feel this is in the wrong section but besides that mother series and battle toads!

Most of my favourites have been mentioned already, so for now I've only got

Smash TV - Great arcade conversion of a hectic top down shooter

smash-tv-screenshot-003.png

(Also, to prevent the spreading of misinformation, I believe Donkey Kong & Bowser were fastest in Mario Kart: they just had terrible acceleration ;) )

Edit: added screenshot

Correct

Also (to stay on topic), I can't believe no one has yet mentioned Secret of Mana (Secret of Mana 2 if we are going by Japanese numbering). This is an excellent action rpg featuring a party of three characters and a wide variety of weapons/magic. More combat oriented in my opinion then the Legend of Zelda series, which is more puzzle oriented.

A lot I would have said have already been said.

One that hasn't been mentioned: Uniracers. Unicycles racing around in cartoonish courses. You get bonus speed for stunts. Really fun to play multiplayer. I seem to recall it supported up to 4 players.

Oh oh oh Super Bomberman! Awesome multiplayer game! I don't need to explain it, do I?

Ooh, good one. It was called Unirally over here. I heard about the lawsuit that put it out of production, for the first time, a few days ago - a real shame, that.

No.

For anyone into football (soccer  ) check out Striker and International Superstar Soccer. IIRC Striker had an option for indoor football, I don't think I've seen that on another game since.
