Aluminium Case being made!

You don't redesign the case for a product that's end of life.
I think that is sorta what happened.

Also, mine is not near the end of life.  It is around infancy or early childhood.  If all goes well (no SIDS) it has decades to go.

The battery compartment can't clip, for example, we need to hold it with screws.
I feel this to be a better solution for most situations. Obviously, it makes pulling the battery if required, or swapping between batteries, a bit more difficult. To me the loss of those for the benefit of not breaking plastic pieces off and needing to tape the battery cover on, and improved strength, is a decent compromise (plus, I usually have a screwdriver nearby, or on me).
You could always secrete a screwdriver of a suitable type into the stylus head?
A metal stylus with plastic tip and screwdriver on the back = win!
I requested this as a feature for Pyra a while back ... ED never commented though... I do hope it is considered and for metal cased Pyra would be even nicer touch
You are not alone in your desire for this.

I'd be interested in an aluminum case if it includes a redesign of the hinge. One thing that bothers me a lot with the original case is the way the display snaps in at 180°, so if it'd also snap in at about 120-140° I'd be a happy camper.

When I mean end of life, I am not talking about the "user end of life", I'm obviously refering to its commercial end of life. When the stocks go to zero, no one can buy a Pandora anymore (except second hand), no matter how long yours will last.

So ED, are you thinking about giving this new case four shoulder buttons and saving Askarus the trouble?  You seem to already be hot with shoulder button design ideas for the Pyra.  This sounds like very good timing to me.
Do you really want your Pandora to fail sooner or later?

At least the buttons will break after a while.

My mod does work but it's nothing forever.

If you don't know hoe to repair it it's nothing you should use.

BTW: This can't be sold as we would have to mod every Pandora manually.

There are no connectors on the board where the buttons are placed.

sadly my pandora is kind of messed up (jack plug is fell off a couple of times And my soldering is sub par, one shoulder button also fell of and that didnt work after resoldering) otherwise I would have loved a aluminium case.

Good to have the choice of Aluminium case, anyway it's too expensive for me... maybe if the price goes down a bit I'll take it

It's too much for me too, but I need it so I'm getting it anyways.  My self calls for it, as if I learned I had a cancer tumor and simply had to pay to have it removed one month, regardless of if I'm comfortable spending the money or not I'm going to do it.

I will buy the sexy aluminium udate only if I can also have a full repair on my 1Ghz unit, witch consist of :

- power switch replacement

- left nub replacement

- touchscreen replacement

Oh boy!  How could I have been missing this thread!!!!  I have 3 pandoras but you only have two colors for this aluminum case  !?  I'll grab one of each for now :D .  When can I order?

What about other clips the plastic case has? (ie. the one in between the SD card slots, the ones around the lid inner part and bottom of lid, etc). Will everything will be held by screws on the aluminium case?

Those clips are a pain to release even with the plastic case, with metal case they would be impossible.

I don't know of any pain-to-remove clips on the Pandora case (except for the lid)

No idea, I'm not the specialist here ;)

Someone mentioned wishing the Pandora's hinge could be improved with the aluminum case, which I suspected is something too difficult and distant for ED and this designer to consider, but what about a very subtle ramp on the top of the lid above the rear ports, the flat side facing back, angled so that it hits the back of the case above the ports?  Would that remove stress on the hinge while the lid is fully open and someone is using the touch screen?  Metal on metal contact may be a bad idea with a colored coat though, scratches and what not.

It's worth bearing in mind this case is something of a prototype, with users perhaps needing to make modifications after purchase to get the best wifi performance. I suspect it's just a straight port of the case to new materials, so any modifications (which might be easier in bendable metal than snappable plastic) might be best made by the end user (and then fed back to ED for possible Pyra metal case ideas)

I actually wish my 3DS had a hinge angle closer to that of the Pandora after using it in bed a few times. It seems to have stops at about 170 degrees and 185 degrees - the latter being almost completely useless.

Interested.  Not so concerned about the WiFi since the WiFi on the Pandora was always sub-par.  However -  I am a bit concerned about the Bluetooth.

When will you have the pre-order up?

Regarding the hinge, should we expect the hinge to operate differently (floppier or more stable)?

Ok, cool.  I thought end of life meant end of support, such as with XP a few months back (I know, comparing apples and worms, hardware/software), or at least "official" support.

How are the chances for Alu D-Pad+ABXY buttons? ^^"
Must happen!
