There was no need for that!

Wow, you really are all getting to far into this psp-scene-esque flame war thats beginning to take over the boards. Guys just forgive each other and forget about it, there's no need. We all want the GP2X (well except donskeeto) so lets just be excited about it and be friends, ok?

Back on topic i vote on the keepage of the jack-hole, and the battery cover. He does look kinda pokemonified so i say a cutesy name to go with his looks - Gpengu it is for me.

Heres some quick artwork. I made a SVG version too, of course.

Yeah, the other colors are just there because I was making this as concept art for a game, there would be 3 AI players of different colors, you would be the white and black one.

The game is based on the Bomb Rally minigame for the GBA version of Kirby's adventure. They pass the bomb-ball around, it goes faster and faster and it becomes harder to catch and throw (A button). I think I would make it in Fenix for the Minigame Project. I was thinking I could call it "GPenGoBoom!".

I found that jack to be funny. :p And I had a good laugh about the "jack-ass" pun. :D

I don't know which one I like. I was thinking maybe the penguin without the buttons and the stick or the accessories or etc etc, and just a plain penguin would look nice too. (Like what Blah posted)

I like how simple it looks! :)

GPengu sounds alright, but it just feels like it's been done before... a lot. But whatever, it sounds fine. :D

If the jack is that big of a deal, maybe you could try taking the battery cover, and swap them around, so you have the jack on the back of his head, and the battery cover on his ass.

Anyway, conforming to the poll, the speaker option looks good. :)

OK, having read through this thread entirely, I've got some thoughts on this.

First of all, I chose 'other'. The placing of the headphone jack truly is disturbing. And as for not being viewed from the back, mostly only from the front or side, I don't think that really matters, since when it is viewed from the back, it just does not look right. And even from the side, you can still see the headphone jack, and it still doesn't look right, even from that angle.

Pea - I remember you emphasizing that this would be a mascot for the gp32x site and also the GP32 and GP2X. But having X and Y buttons on it don't say that to me, since the GP32 does not have these buttons - this says simply GP2X mascot to me. And with time this site will be more and more GP2X oriented as it slowly takes over (not saying the GP32 will totally die, but it definitely won't be top dog after a while), so all the more reason why this to me says GP2X mascot only. Plus the GP32 does not have Linux OS, which the Penguin has always represented.

[edit]
And if this was put into a game, if the game only came out on GP2X, then it simply could not be a GP32 mascot after that.
[/edit]

Having a look then at the GP2X gallery on the GPHoldings site I noticed that the headphone jack is in fact on the top of the unit. The battery compartment is of course down the bottom at the back. So, with this in mind, wouldn't that be a more logical choice for the placings of such on this 'mascot'?

I've done a simple mock up of the back of the penguin, placing the battery compartment down the bottom and the speaker/headphone jack at the top (I didn't do one with the d-pad, since I don't think that looks good in any way)

Penguin2.png

(btw, i think the Matrix effect the headphone jack in the mock-up above looks really cool).

Now my photo-editing skills aren't all that hot, and I haven't done anything from the side (because of my crap editing skills), and the battery compartment could obviously be more contoured to the penguin's body, but this is just to give a general idea of how I think it could look.

As for a name - I like GPenguin. Or GeePee as someone else mentioned earlier.

quick remark about the punctuation: many people here aren't native english speakers, and they do take the time to write well formed posts. Talking like a retard doesn't display common courtesy, is rude, and makes you look like a total idiot. Ofcourse I won't tell people that they HAVE to type like someone who has enjoyed at least a moderate level of education, but don't be surprised if noone takes you seriously :)

I think the penguin is cool and cute B) though I think it is too close to the Linux mascot. For example, IMHO it would like Sony having a smaller blue hedghog as the PS1 mascot when it came out

It would be great as a sidekick to something else though.

Here are two variations that would be fun to see:-

Teletubby Penguins
A line of 4 teletubby penguins, all with the different aerials and colours, plus the GP2x screen in their tummys with the GP2x logo on the screen.

Snorkeling Penguin
A penguin with the GP2x as a snorkel mask (like in the intro animation for Bullfrogs Flood game on the Amiga)

I am a native english speaker, I'm just very lazy when posting on a forum.
I apologise profusely for my bad punctuation and in future will read my posts properly before adding them.

Ok, here's what I think in summary:

1) Go with most popular options, which is either the speaker or the batery cover.
2) Keep the plug. Its funny, damn it! :)
3) Call him GPengu
4) Create a few views for use on the site if Hando wants, and a model for anyone who wants to use him for game/graphics.
5) Make some wallpapers

Any one who doesn't like:
1) Penguin in general. Just ignore him :)
2) Name. Just call him whatever you like
3) Jack. Get a sense of humour.
4) Anything else. Tough, can't please everyone.

Sweet?
