Playing with Play-Doh

We have different board revisions, hns should know all about them.
Here is some info for whoever wants to write a Wiki entry (please PM me if you need more information)
  • V1 first tests for shape, keyboard, shoulder buttons and sockets
  • V2
  • V3
  • V3.5
  • V4 first motherboard that works on OMAP5 EVM through adapter
  • V4.5 more improvements
  • V4.9 first version that works with our own OMAP5 CPU board
  • V5.0 first full and complete prototypes produced @GC on mass production line (Dec 2015)
  • V5.1/5.1.3 developer devices produced @GC (30/40 units built Sept 2016 and Jan 2017)
  • planned V5.2 mass series
I did send a photo of all of them near each other a while ago in some other thread.

Oberhaching? More like Uberhacking :-D
Yes, here in Bavaria we are very very conservative in traditional things. Is is simply the old german spelling and pronunciation of "Überhacking" :)

Yes, I remember that theard with pictures of all prototype MB.

The Prototype I receive is 5.1.3 :)

@hns
Do you have the same information for the SoC board & the display board?
It is the information for all three.

We started with Mainboard V1. AFAIR the first Display boards were added in V3.0 and the first OMAP5 board revision with V4.9.

To explain the background: all schematics and PCBs are in a single project file to keep things (e.g. connectors, position of components) in sync. So the 3 PCBs you see now were in different maturity and only partially built in each version. So for example sketches of the OMAP5 board did exist in V3.0 but were never built. And even that is wrong. There was a pure physical demonstrator of the CPU board dimensions with V4.0. Well, not a pure demonstrator. It had the cable interface to the OMAP5EVM which was removed in later designs.

I am not sure if you want to document all such details from the lab and who would need it.

IMHO it is more important which version numbers you will ever see in the wild. And which version numbers the Linux kernel must be aware because of hardware changes that can not be automatically detected.

These are:
- maybe a V5.0 device which ED had shown around on Gamescom in the past
- V5.1 devices which are currently tested by developers
- V5.2 devices from mass production
- maybe V5.3 if we learn how to improve things (it may also be driven by future production if we have to replace obsolete components and make small PCB redesigns)

Looking back, we should have started with V0.1 numbering :) And should have reserved V1.0 for the first mass production. But it is too late to change history...

Yes, and the CPU board says V5.1.2. Display board should also say V5.1.3. The small difference comes from a late change to main board after CPU boards had been ordered.

Filling the waiting time for the next post I got inspired by the title of this post, got me some playdoh.
Turns out at my age that is no fun like it used to be
:-(
Good to know. I am tempted whenever I see it lately.

Squish it through a garlic press, it's oddly satisfying
Oh, and maybe an egg slicer. NO! I have enough toys for now, and better things to spend money on.

Meanwhile, while we wait for more news, I'm going to cleanup my desk and use a few of my paperclips to hold my papers together. (was using Pandora's for that, but they bend the paper)

Paperclips also bend paper if left on for long enough, and in such timescales also have a habit of rusting slightly and leaving the classic iron oxide 'U's you sometimes see. They can also dig in and shred the corner of papers as you pull them off. I'm more of a fan of staples to be honest, although those can also rust and leave marks on the paper if they rust, but I personally find them less obtrusive, and also will create holes in every sheet instantaneously. If you really need to file paper without bending or marking it, I'd suggest paper folders are the way to go.

It also tastes horrible.

This is the reason for using nice copper paperclips. These leave elegant green "U"s when exposed to ocean air.
