GPD Win (x86 Computer / Palmtop)

The action of supporting gpd when you know about Pyra is disgusting yeah.
What if you support both? I won't buy a GPD Win and will buy a Pyra but wish GPD luck, personally I think the market is big enough for both Pyra & GPD Win.
Because it's a knockoff and because of their ugly marketing move on indiegogo.
There is no way the GPD Win is a 'knockoff' of the Pyra, the base concept is of course the same i.e. a handheld mini PC with hardware KB and full gaming controls but by your logic what sort of car/laptop/kettle etc. is not a knockoff? As for the marketing it strikes me as silly rather than ugly in the fact that all they've got to back up their campaign is some renders, my guess is that if they even had stuff to demo from a dev board they'd have made much more of a splash, if they had a working prototype then even better.
Plus WE have nearly nothing to WIN by this knockoff but a lot to loose, as I explained in my previous post cited above. All gpd have is marketing and maybe THEY will WIN thanks to it and dumb "fan".
Depends what you mean by win and lose, if GPD Win & Pyra both sell enough units to make a profit then IMHO they have both won even if one vastly outsells the other.

I wasn't aware that since I'm a Windows user I'm predisposed to not having a preference when it comes to bad keyboard layouts. Maybe I should look into one of these alternatives you speak of.

Which alternatives would those be then?

D.

If a person were to seriously look into the alternatives to Windows, they would be less likely to use Windows. Thus, people who use Windows do so without examining alternatives - simply accepting what they're given.

Those same people, when considering the GPD product, are unlikely to question the keyboard and simply assume that it's normal.

The alternative to Windows is of course Linux.
The alternative to the GPD keyboard is the Pyra keyboard.

Windows users are used to not looking for alternatives. They are used to accepting defaults for what they can and can not do or have. By extension they'll just accept the GPD keyboard as being "the way of it" and move on.

You're not wrong but you're not fully right, I have never used Linux, I only play on Windows. I'm choosing the Pyra, not because of the OS, but because of what Pyra is. Even if I would love to play x86 software on a small handled, I won't choose GPD WIN. Somemore I think that Pyra's keyboard is far better for an handled purpose.

You're right for one thing, personally I don't care about the choice I have for gaming, as long as no other OS has as many games as Windows has, I won't choose Linux as my main computer's OS, somemore because all companies are developing for Windows.

So windows users care about alternatives, but we are almost sure (lots of us at least) that such os probably will never be done.

I'm just wondering if the fact that you stutter in writing is related to the fact that you can't read the difference between an action and a human.
It shouldn't go that far... It shouldn't go any personal.

Do you actually get to play all those games? How big is your backlog?
I'm not even able to significantly reduce my backlog of awesome games for Linux.

I played lot and I still have a lot to play, I also have games on old cd that didn't supported Linux by the time it was out from studios.

Somemore lots of games on Linux aren't well ported, like the Witcher III, lots of Mmorpg don't work on Linux, and some other small games need to be set up to work on Linux, with third party software like Wine.

So by your logic, to make a "Laptop fitting in your pocket" you have to put 2 nub between d-pad and buttons, and a keyboard below ?

They already have 20% of their goal in 4 days with 2 month remaining. They had a lot of advertising and succefully stole Pyra's pioneer status.

Depends what you mean by win and lose, if GPD Win & Pyra both sell enough units to make a profit then IMHO they have both won even if one vastly outsells the other.
GPD already made profit... Maybe it will be a happy end, but stealing Pyra's status of pioneer in uninformed heads will always be ugly.

Now I'm just wondering how wondering about something can be a personal attack.

Pioneer at what exactly? What is GPD Win doing that Pyra does that Pandora didn't already do?

You do know Pandora's design was basically Craig's idea, right? So it must be pretty disgusting that ED is stealing Craig's idea... Or, we can not pretend that this is such an innovative concept that the person who came up with it deserves exclusive rights to do it. Because it really isn't. GPD Win is GPD XD with a keyboard placed roughly where all the empty space was in the bottom half of the clamshell.

Personally there's a good chance I'll get both and I really don't care if you think this is disgusting or whatever other petty commentary you have on the matter. They serve different purposes, they both appear to have their own pros and cons, there's room for both.

And really if you're holding on to a Pyra x86 upgrade as a foregone conclusion whose only obstacle is this device there's a good chance you'll be disappointed.

Now I'm just wondering how wondering about something can be a personal attack.

That's a good one. I wonder if you stopped beating your wife yet?

They stole it? How?
We sold 200 pre-preorders (limited to that number) within 4 days in October, they sold 69 in two days so far.
We also had some press releases back then, but I want to keep it low until we actually have the fully working prototype to show, whereas GPD doesn't care about that yet.

Besides, I hate the type of advertising they're doing... the tried to create four threads with the exact same text in various categories at the boards here (the spam filter of the boards prevented that though) and they also posted the exact same text in various threads we had about the GPD already.

Yes, I could also get that kind of advertisement - post it multiple times at every forum I find. I haven't seen any major newssites picking it up yet though...

But you will never see such advertising methods from me, as I hate them - that doesn't mean there won't be advertisement for the Pyra later though. I'll do one post per board, and I will contact various newssites.
I just want to wait until everything is done and working.

So not sure what you mean with stealing our pioneer status. Both devices are not out yet and our first pre-preorder round was more successful at the moment.

Moreover you also sold prototypes, would you mind to remind me how many and how much did they cost each?
I'm not sure that someone would be willing to buy GPD WIN prototype, and even more with the preproduction price.

So even if I don't like the way they spamming I hope they'll succeed in making a great device. But still, I think they're really far from what ED 's team accomplished.

By the way: EvilDragon: wats your Ordernumber?? Do you also get one of the Prepreorderunits, or do you still pick a prototyph for your own Use??

This thing is obviously a Pandora/Pyra knockoff and it isn't near as elaborate as Pyra.
They can market it as an innovation as the Pandora formfactor is still undiscovered and Pyra isn't yet on crowfunding.
I can't belive you don't know that Pyra = Pandora 2.

Personally there's a good chance I'll get both and I really don't care if you think this is disgusting or whatever other petty commentary you have on the matter. They serve different purposes, they both appear to have their own pros and cons, there's room for both.
For your information disgust is a feel, not a thought. I'm still feeling disgusted and you can call me offensive or petty or whatever it don't change my feelings.

I thought that gpd would go on crowdfunding before you when I first read about gpd win but I didn't speak about it because I thought you would not change your plan and it could give ideas. I think that having a working prototype is better too but you never know what impact can have gpd as a big company.
Actually my posts were more about the potential danger than an actual danger because I didn't investigate to measure the danger.

Didn't look at it that way. Good new.

I don't even know what this has to do with what I said. How does that make Pyra a pioneer. Pyra isn't Pandora, you can't be a pioneer twice...

For your information disgust is a feel, not a thought. I'm still feeling disgusted and you can call me offensive or petty or whatever it don't change my feelings.

I called it commentary, and if you feel the need to call people disgusting here I'm pretty sure that qualifies as commentary. Apparently you think there's some reason why you should be calling people here disgusting.

To precise, what I'm talking about is the team, the community who made Pandora and Pyra and they are pioneer of this formfactor.

I called it commentary, and if you feel the need to call people disgusting here I'm pretty sure that qualifies as commentary. Apparently you think there's some reason why you should be calling people here disgusting.
You said I called it a thought, which is wrong because

I never called someone disgusting. You should quote where I called people disgusting or apologize.

To precise, what I'm talking about is the team, the community who made Pandora and Pyra and they are pioneer of this formfactor.

So you think the community designed Pandora? Because what really happened is one day Craig revealed the Pandora design which he came up with without community input. Craig had the idea and DaveC did the actual physical design work. Neither are related to Pyra.

I never called someone disgusting. You should quote where I called people disgusting or apologize.

Okay so your argument here is you're not actually calling anyone disgusting, they're just people who evoke disgust within you. Which would happen to be a definition of disgusting (first on google = "arousing revulsion or strong indignation") but I guess you are arguing that point...

To precise, what I'm talking about is the team, the community who made Pandora and Pyra and they are pioneer of this formfactor.

So the fact that the Pandora team took the idea of a mobile PC (done before many times, both in a clamshell and otherwise) and merged it with game controls found in other clamshells - and adding nubs was so innovative :p - was a pioneering move? Mobile computing has been around since at least the 1980s - I had a Casio PB-110 back then, and there were other, more powerful ones available.

The Pandora was not innovative - what it was, was an all-in-one designed as a spiritual successor to other handhelds beloved by the community that it sprang from. And until the 1GHz came along it pretty much failed to live up to the hype that Craig generated around it.

Pioneers? No. The Pandora team were cool guys with an awesome community spirit though.

D.

The Pandora was not innovative
Welllll, literally it was innovative: making any change to a product, for better or for worse, and creating an entirely new product from that change technically matches the definition of an innovation. Slapping nubs and buttons on a palmtop computer may not have been groundbreaking but it was still, by definition, an innovation, and that could be where some of the confusion is coming from: defining innovation as "anything new" vs groundbreaking innovation of "something COMPLETELY new".
