Wifi is not working... hardware or software issue? (video inside)

Before hotfix 5 , the WIFI led don´t blink at all. Then it start blinking wen OS starts.

But Pandora is not able to detect any WIFI around. Should i need to configure something?

How can i be 100% sure it is not a hardware problem?

after disabling/enabling the wifi, open a terminal, do dmesg > /media/(replace me with your sd card name)/dmesg.log and attach the log so we can have a look at the messages from the wifi driver.

Code:
apolo-openpandora:~$ dmesg /media/E/dmesg.log

yep, try the battery trick, seeing how the hardware just refuse to answer, it should force it to restart from scratch. but it sure does like an rma case unfortunatly ><.

No look at all. OS appears, with wrong time in the clock, etc.. no wi fi detection at all.

Now my impressions as a customer...

It is clear the Pandora units are NOT TESTED at all as the Pandora team mentioned. I mean: this is a basic function, WIFI and an OBVIOUS problem.

So , some questions may worry any potential buyer is:

a- is the WIFI testing part of the CHECKLIST before they ship the Pandora?

b- if an automatic function as detecting a WIFI connection is not part of the check list and previous testing... are the Pandora units extensively tested in other critical areas?

I feel frustrated about this. RMA is not a good solution at all: shipping costs involved, time involved, you will be without your unit for a while...

I am really disappointed about this. And i see WI FI is a very common problem over here. May be Pandora just should don´t include WI FI or include it as optional ad on , and reduce price. In fact i don´t use WI FI so much , but nobody want to have a defective unit and paid for something everybody have but you don´t.

Any other idea or test before RMA?

So , some questions may worry any potential buyer is:

a- is the WIFI testing part of the CHECKLIST before they ship the Pandora?

Yes. If it doesn't connect, it doesn't continue to flash the bootloader on the unit with our current SD Card image, so it had to be working when it was tested.

b- if an automatic function as detecting a WIFI connection is not part of the check list and previous testing... are the Pandora units extensively tested in other critical areas?

CC (the board manufacturer) tests the audio output, the SD Card slots, the WiFi module, the nubs and communication between various parts.

The team tests WiFi, the battery gauge, the LCD (incl. touchscreen), the speakers, the nubs and every single key.

SD Slot 1 and the NAND are also being tested.

Keep in mind that such boards are delicate. It might be the unit had been thrown around while shipping and the solder on the WiFi module wasn't too good. That would result in non-working WiFi.

Reflowing it would probably fix that instantly... but that's nothing someone can do at home :(

Ok. Reflowing... this is something i can´t do. But i have technicians here that con do the job. What about offer instructions and give a permission that don´t void warranty ? What about sending me a photo on what must to be done?

My technicians fixed even old portable consoles as GAME GEAR, TURBOGRAFX, even some LED DOTS ones from the 70´s without problem. Is this something a technician can do easily? Is possible to get "a permission to try without void warranty" and some instructions?

Regards

Fixing old stuff cannot be compared with fixing recent technology.

I can fix old computers myself, but I surely cannot solder the WiFi module, it's tiny!

If your technicians are experienced in repairing mobile phones or similiar devices, they can try to reflow the wifi module.

There are no contacts on the bottom of the module, so it's possible.

About warranty:

Well, that's a hard one.

I something breaks because of improper repairments, there is no warranty anymore. i.e. if there are big solder blobs on the WiFi module that make a short circuit or damaged traces or anythign else on the board that can be identified to has happened from improper repairments, you definetely won't have warranty anymore.

If you will still have warranty if proper repairs have been done depends on your distributor. You should ask there :)

Ok EvilDragon.. my technicians repaired some ZODIACS , N-GAGE and GP32 so i think may be they can see, they definitely will not touch anibody if they see is something they don´t know.

of course i prefer send it back to you... but i am very sad to do that and stay without my Zod for a long time. Please understand me. Is frustrating . I admit the support is great in HUMAN terms, you always answer, you offer me ANY option (refund, replacemente, repair) , so nothing to say about you about support. I am just MAD about to be without my Pandora for about 3 weeks, i am full enjoying it, i am just watching ways to get it fix without be without it.

I know i need to send it to you, but i just can´t separate from my Pandora.. what can i do???' :(

What you don't do is lie to paypal and get your money back, which is what you have done, so you have essentially stolen a Pandora from us. I don't normally do this but to try to stop what you are doing I'm publicly posting our email to you here and I will post your emails to us if you don't stop this right away:

Craigx you are taking this personal, i keep this private not about me , about YOU. If you want to make it public how frustrating is to buy a Pandora to the Latin Market, no problem.

I will put exactly my answer. This is not personal: i paid for something i never got. You want to make it public? No problem: my work is to make things public. I am not an enemy of this project.. i am just asking to get a working Pandora and a Case this is what i paid and this never happened yet. I hope you can understand and don´t take this personal. I am not taking this personal.

This is not some kind of "war", i just want what i paid for. I don´t pretend to stole an additional Pandora, only thing i want is to get a full working Pandora with all the ad ons i paid. Is that wrong? I think you are a reasonable person and will understand exactly how i feel if you analyze all the process. I think is a bad idea to make this public: will affect YOUR image not mines at all.

My answer to your sales team is here:

Hello Jacquelyn:

Jacquelyn

Please read all.

As a customer i have the right to get exactly what i paid for.

- i paid for a Pandora full working... did i get this? No.

- i paid for a Pandora plus Official case... did i get this? No.

According with Paypal policies this match exactly "defective item" and "incomplete items", so i have the right to open a claim or even a dispute. One more time: this is not against you , or Craig. Is not personal. I paid (and is a considerable digit) i want exactly what i paid for. To open a Paypal dispute is one way and right i have to get what i paid for, but not the only. At this moment i will keep this way only to see if we can understand each other.

You are asking me to send the Pandora back and trust i will get a working unit in some future. This is not acceptable for me , i am sorry.

I was reading the forums (because you ask me to read forums) and i found a lot of people complaining because they don´t have the refunds or the units. In these forums i made a test under EvilDragon supervision that stated the Pandora i own is NOT WORKING and the WIFI MODULE is damaged and must be re-flow .

As long Pandora is offered as the WIFI connection as one of the main features (you can install programs and download games from the Pandora repository) of course this may be considered "seriously damaged". Pandora itself and external box don´t have signs of hits, and according with a local technician testimonial , a hit capable to damage the WIFI module probably break the screen first. (i will attach this report to the Paypal dispute wen requested)

You don´t trust in me.. you are suggesting i will keep the 2 Pandoras may be? :) Ok let´s see the facts...

- i promised i will on a given date after the invoice sent, i paid exactly this date.

- i promised i will contribute on spreading the voice about the Pandora after get it and write a positive review, and i did it.

- check this profile... i even sold VERY EXPENSIVE ITEMS (950 USD) to USA. Check my reputation: http://myworld.ebay.com/seoworker . I have no "neutral" feedbacks or negative. ONLY 100% positive feedbacks all over the last years.

- check this profile http://www.ikarma.com/id/27062 , as you see 5 STARS, any of my client was able to just enter and piss me there... but i keep my 5 STARS reputation all this time.

I will not judge you or your company. But i have elements enough to consider the act of sending this unit back with my money there and just wait "high risk". I consulted this with my professional team here at the agency.

Now , there are 2 ways here. I am not your enemy: i want to have a Pandora here , working and i can close dispute or i can close it before if i have your word you will send the unit. I want a Pandora working here and a case (you say the case is on its way, great).

Once the Pandora is here you have my word , the non working Pandora i have here will be out to you. If this way, i offer :

- to stay supporting the Pandora project in my area, what i in fact want to do.

- to handle the shipping cost

You will not loose anything. Once working Pandora here, i will dispatch this unit there and send you tracking number. And everybody will be happy: me as a customer, and i will be what i want to be: a Pandora´s project supporter.

The other way we can be involved on a dispute were i will use any reasonable and legal way in my hands to get exactly what i mentioned above and i paid for.

Jacquelyn: think about it... i paid a big amount. I know you apologize.. but i got a Pandora without the case (that is not cheap at all) and unit that is not working on one of its main function. And what i get as an answer is "send it back and wait". Just put 1 minute yourself on my skin.

Once again: if you want the dispute closed before you send to get the money back, NO PROBLEM i trust your parole if you give me. But i want the Pandora working here before i sent this one. I will not stole a unit, you can even open a case if this happen. I am the most recognized portable gaming collector in Latin America and my reputation is full clean.

Open mind please, and please let´s resolve this. Is not personal: i just want what i paid. Nothing here was my fault or responsibility.. why i must be the one who be damaged, blamed, pissed? Why you can´t trust in me but i am forced to trust in Pandora´s team as long at this moment nothing work as it should related with shipping?

Please be reasonable. Don´t be upset, just think about it .

Regards

I was reading the forums (because you ask me to read forums) and i found a lot of people complaining because they don´t have the refunds or the units.
all these complains were related to the Jacquelyn mailbox. So far nobody got scammed here. It might takes sometimes to get your refund or your unit but you will have it.

I must say, I find that to be out of line. If you have a defective unit, which many have received over the last year, you don't contact Paypal and say "?", to get your money refunded. It appears that Craig and his staff went above and beyond to help you on your quest to save a few dollars in regards to customs. Now, you don't turn around and yell "FOUL" to paypal.

Well, I'm not sure how Paypal functions in the UK, but here in the states they require that the defective product be returned by the buyer with some form of proper tracking, before theey will complete a refund. I have had a few international buyers do shit like this, but once they realize they have to return the item, and show proof of it's return, they normally come to their right mind and then we come to an agreed conclusion to whatever the problem is.

So hopefully Paypal functions the same everywhere, and even though they have removed the funds from OP account, they won't return them to the buyer until he or she shows proof of the items actual return. So now you will have to spend funds which you tried to save in the first place, and once your unit is returned, I'm sure you will be blacklisted from ever buying from Craigs shop in the future, so what have you really accomplished?

You will have your original purchase price back minus what ever cost you have now racked up to return it. OP will have to return your funds, but they will have the unit, which will be repaired and resold at some later date, and you will have nothing exept a receipt for the amount you had to pay for the return, which if your not in the UK will be at least 30-50 dollars for trackable return shipping(which is required by Paypal for a full refund).

So if anyone out there has any kind of problem with their unit, please go thru the proper channels and "RESPECT" whomever you are dealing with(Ed, Craig, Jackie, Debs, ect.), and treat them the same way you would like to be treated if situations where reversed.

Chris

I'm sorry that your unit was found to be defective, I really am.

It's just an electronic device, not a life essential necessity.

There are people who have been waiting for a couple years to finally get their pandora and you can't deal without 3 weeks. Your argument is offensive: Why do you think that you are more important than everyone else who deals with the normal RMA process? Everyone else that RMA's has to mail their's back and wait, so should you! It's selfish to use the argument, "Just put 1 minute yourself on my skin"..imagine all the annoying complaints OPT customer service has to deal with day in, day out. It's amazingly frustrating when you can't call out a customer for being unreasonable.

Also, Why should you receive more trust as a customer then a company? Remember, this is the internet filled with cons and anonymous. How do we know your claimed ebay store and ikarma website profiles are this poster on this forum? You could be lying through your teeth, it's hard to tell online..no offense.

Have faith in the open pandora team and don't try to act like you're more important than anyone else. Pro Tip: Mail back your unit and you'll get a new one soon enough. After the drama you are causing I'm sure the team will take extra care with your RMA anyways. Finally, promote the Pandora proudly. It rocks.

Good luck fellow pandora user!

@Jumpman

Paypal has a reputation of siding with the buyer in disputes, for right and wrong... I guess it's easier for them to move funds then deal with the actual dispute.

Chris

Chris thanks for your opinion... I want to stablish i am NOT UPSET with OP team. Ok? I manage directly or indirectly lot of game forums, groups, etc and you NEVER will find a review from me AGAINST Pandora. I did 2 videos, showing how good is the unit dealing with systems like PSX and SEGA 32X, etc. I promoted the project in any latino forum i was able to do . My only disappointment is my customer experience on what i get... i get a defective unit and a case i paid never come. i keep this PRIVATE, never make it public.

I try to contact about this. What i got is the test, i did it. Then the option to send Pandora back, and hope better look next time.. we are talking about 500 USD not about a cheap chinese PMP, ok? :) So what i asked was reasonable.

I did not lie to Paypal: i mark exactly the statements that match my case. The money is not in my pocket, Craigx you are wrong about this dude... Paypal freeze the money if you open a dispute but don´t give me the money back. Just keep the money. So i am not stolen nothing. You don´t like to don´t have the money?

Ok, i DON´T LIKE to don´t have a full working Pandora and official case. Now we are at same level.

I am not an enemy , i support the project. But if you this is the way you threat people that want to help and support i am double disappointed now. You are acting exactly like the big corporations were i am just a number that need to fill a form and wait and be pissed. I think this was not the way.

I don´t hate you, i like the device. I open a case on Paypal after trying to get what i consider fair. And i escalated after can´t arrive to a deal. And if OP Team don´t mention this here, this keep full confindential and nobody from latin america ( a big market, but were buyers DON´T TRUST easily in companies) will know my experience.

I don´t want to damage the project or stole the Pandora, come on! :) What i am doing here giving my phone number in public and name and even my real FACE if this is the case? Why i am not pissing all the project on the net? I support the project, i don´t think involved people is bad people or scammers as the troll in the other messaged said. But if a mistake was committed you need to face it. That´s all about.

I can´t be just sending unit and crossing fingers waiting better look next time.. please understand me.

I am sorry about any inconvenience this may be caused i did all what i can to avoid it.

My suggestion: delete these messages , we can communicate private. This is a private issue and make it public affect Pandora project not me. Affect what latin potential buyers may think about what they get. Believe me, i am telling you this as a friend not as an enemy.

And don´t worry by Paypal money. If we arrive to a solution, the money will be back. I will be not able to keep both things : money and item , at some point you will get the money and i will get a full working unit. The questions is how to arrive there as mature and reasonable persons. Ok?

Well, I have to say I have seen a lot - but I've never seen someone asking for a replacement unit while keeping the old one for a while AND opening a dispute with PayPal.

If you claim a dispute with PayPal, you have to send the item back at the same time, otherwise Craig got no money for an almost completely working unit (except for WiFi).

THEN asking to send another unit after you held back the money AND don't want to ship the broken one back is asking pretty much, if you ask me.

PayPal usually siding with the buyer is actually an issue as well.

I know I had one guy who ordered a GP2X, paid with PayPal and once he received it, he claimed the box was empty and got his money back.

Pretty cool, huh?

The same could happen here, who knows? You're a guy from the internet, nobody knows you. You could be a scammer (I don't believe that, but I can't prove it, as I don't know you) as every new guy around here as well.

Hard to tell without knowing each other, right?

Now, Craig and the OpenPandora team is pretty well known here, so almost everyone knows we're no scammers.
