Hey Zardoz, does the gp32 have any sort of date/time clock? Maybe future betas could contain a "don't run past a certain date" function like many shareware programs have these days. Or, if the smc encryption thing is easy to do, maybe encrypt private betas for specific testers/sites. Seems like extreme measures, but ... anything to keep it going.

Hell, if it'll keep the Genesis emu going, I'll go stand at people's houses and make sure they don't leak it while they test it. :)

You might be onto something there. For private releases emulator authors could sign the binaries with the testers GP32 ID, like JoyGP does. Aren't some guys doing this with an alternate FreeLauncher download?

The other idea I had was encode each one with a unique ID. I know, more of a pain in the ass, and doesn't really stop leaks, but if a leak does occur you know who to cut off next time.

HI flack - yes it does have a RTC - but the whole problem with arm code - it's so easy to disassemble and hack .
but I've a better plan for future private releases you can encrypt per smc - and make it virtually impossible to run on other machines - this different from the secure max techinque - so I guess I'll be using that.

RobG - alot of games run just fine without z80 - well almost all the important ones i've tested so far

Cool :)

But have you emulated the BLAST PROCESSING?? ;)

IMHO, the bottom line is, this is the internet. Stuff you don't want to go out, goes out. Ask the MPAA and RIAA about this.

If you are *SO* thin skinned you can't stand this, tough. The bastard who pulled this shit should be skinned, but anybody who didn't *KNOW* this would happen is damn naive.

Most of the emus being ported were originally released under the GPL. The authors of the ports tend *NOT* to release the source, which is frankly illegal.

The private releases got into buttheads hands *SOMEHOW*. Somewhere along the line, trust was breached. If developers are really paranoid, they could make each copy issued for a private beta a little different (version number in the title sceen, etc.). That way, they would know who screwed them over.

This crap of "you sent out my private beta, now I'm taking my code and going home" is just that, crap. Frankly, if that's the way you feel, leave. I love your work, I appreciate your contribution, nice knowing you...

BLAST PROCESSING!!!! is the GP32 capable of emulating that? Well I guess we might have to wait until the gp64 comes out until that can be done.

Yes but the RIAA is an evil cartel that rips off consumers and artists, whilst emulator authors are people who are working for free to make us happy. ;)

Judging from Zardoz' answer I don't think he's managed to emulate it!

So I'd say the GP32 probably isn't capable.

Cpt_Kirks - I agree about the GPL issue, I've seen a few programs released without source. But I guess there's no real way to enforce it, GPL hasn't been tested in court yet. However,

This crap of "you sent out my private beta, now I'm taking my code and going home" is just that, crap. Frankly, if that's the way you feel, leave. I love your work, I appreciate your contribution, nice knowing you...

That -quote- is pure crap in itself. The emulator port is the author's own work and he/she, license permitting, has complete control over how it is used. If it is given to a tester with the condition that it remains private, it shouldn't be leaked. Basically they have formed a contract.

Of course contracts like this never hold up. People want to show things like this off. It's disgraceful, as much as we might want to see betas, authors might not want buggy, untested or below-par code released. If it doesn't work, the author gets flames, complaints, etc. and people see his/her skills as poor because they mistake the buggy code for the final deal.

I'm afraid you don't speak for many of us if you prefer someone to leave the GP32 scene rather than work on a few things and stop working on one of them.

ps News added to gp32x.

ZardozJones - if that really was a leaked snesemu, I'm sorry for ever downloading it. I'm sorry, in a way, for how pissed off you would have been when it got leaked and spread through the internet. Shit, I'm sorry for the state of the community right now when people don't respect other people's property, that you can't even beta test something without it being leaked. ThunderZ may have overreacted, but if snesemu was leaked how many of us can say we haven't played it? How many web admins haven't put the file up for download on their sites?

So there's a 90-100% speed Megadrive emulator, with excellent compatibility, and it's only being kept private because it doesn't have sound?

I bet there's not a single GP32 owner who'd turn down that emu in it's current state, and plenty who'd pay for it. Surely that's helping to create this situation by having a highly desirable product in the hands of chosen few, and only for the sake of perfectionism.

As for the email thing, I would have thought it was common sense to set up an account specifically for the project, rather than distribute a personal email address.

it has a few problems at the moment including: random crashing, re loading and a few other things - this is why it's gonna be a while before it gets released

zard what would it take to get that emu! I DON'T CARE FOR SOUND! I WUNT SONIC!
but seriously we need to ask ryleh to go to this guys house and string him up by his bollocks

Yep, thanks a lot to all those irritating stupid fucknuts who keep hasseling emu coders until they are so fed up they leave the community. This is EXACTLY why we have a no roms policy on irc. I think people should support emu coders instead of complaining about slow framerates etc. IT'S FUCKING FREE YOU STUPID ASSHOLES!

And to all frustrated gp32 coders: just hang on gp32dev and put all those irritating ppl on ignore :)

Rico,

I was not encouraging anybody to leave. I was simply commenting on the fact that if they did wish to leave, which is their perfect right, they should be wished well and sent on their way.

I still think it's crap, though. Trust was breached, but it was the developers trust. They gave the beta to some prick who released it against the developers wishes. Basically, the developers screwed up by trusting an untrustworthy individual and is taking it out on the community as a whole.

As I said, crap. I tend to live by the X-Files motto.

ZarJ,

Keep up the excellent work and good luck.

I've been avoiding the channels too. :/
