Its been bothering me that there are so many different splash screens on the pandora:

pre-boot (bootloader?)

boot

login

xfce

minimenu

pndmanager (none)

Since this is a way to improve the pandora user experience I can actualy help with, I though I might be worth starting this thread

Does anyone understand where/how the currently used splashes are stored?

The below are based on traylorpark's designs

Could the line under the progress bar also act as a line to type your username/password on?

I took the liberty to play with the colors for the text on the bottom bar.

Extract the tarball and copy the directory to /usr/share/slim/themes

Then, edit /etc/slim.conf, change the theme from pnd-default to pnd-new.

can this be packeged into a PND as in installer/uninstaller? should only require a bashscript and the files in the PND

Likes :)

Anyone know how xfce splashes work?

I'll see if it needs any tweaking to become a wallpaper...

This is what to do with the Xfce splash screen:

Disable it because it's useless ^^.

^ true :)

I've darkened the background so that you can see icons on top of it (will upload shortly edit: done)

It seems to provide a nice transition from the login screen

bootsplash anyone?

I guess the many Splash Screens are for entertainment because it takes sooo long to boot, so at least there is something happening on screen. :D On single, static splash may be to boring to survive the long boot time. I usualy shut down the Pandora completely because I don't use it every day.

But the splash screens here are looking nice, I like the clean design. :)

On my pandora at 700MHz (booting from built-in nand) it takes 5 seconds to start doing anything visible

This doesn't seem too long, but for this and (especially the bootsplash) it would be neat if it could show a progress bar (as in the original post) and even tell you what is happening.

during boot, perhaps just read the last (white on black text) boot message

Could anything similar be done for xfce?

Who created the current bootsplash?

It must be possible to find the files by poking around enough, though...

MAybe add some text to the bottom bar, like "Starting XFCE..."?

EDIT: And possibly remove the bar completely from the desktop background image?

Ooh, this topic gets my stamp of approval!

Actually, this kind of attention to detail in the user experience is really important. I'm glad to see you, Binky, taking a look into it.

I could give you my source PSD's if your interested. Even for the other designs as well.

And, do you have any control over the font and color at the bottom of the screen?

Great work! Just out of interest, how to disable splashscreens?

I much prefer wallpapers :)
