on my computer it takes approx 8 hours to encode a movie to Pocket PC standards

now to me thats not really smooth sailing and i cant imagine it being better for the PSP encoding

I work in a computer shop, i know that most people dont have anywhere near the sorta spec to handle stuff like that easily

Is this from dvd to pocket pc, Or from an already encoded film. If it is the latter, It might be worth trying pocket divx encoder.

http://divx.ppccool.com/

It`s freeware and can encode for smartphones, Archos players, low spec pc`s and pocket pc. It only takes 15 minutes for a 1 1/2 hour movie on my lowly AMD 1800+.

there r alot of sony fanboy ( and nintendo for ds) that will get the psp just cause it is sony. But others for the movies or music. in most cases it will end up the parents buyin the psp's for there kids and i dout many people will be buyin those bloody sony data sticks or what eva.

Anyhoo, yeah. Gamestation we're nearly sold out by friday at 12.

Dixons seem to have a good stack of DS machines in stock I noticed today. I've seen a lot of people looking at them and even a few people who know I'm into computers games etc.. asked me about the machine and they aren't even into games, so it's getting noticed.
Lot's of townies in our tiny Gamestation today so I didn't really get a chance to see their stock levels or much of anything else really.

I've not seen the 'DS SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE' headlines anywhere yet, so how well is it selling? In Japan and the USA they sold insanely fast but here it seems more of a gentle but good flow.

Can anyone who works in a computer shop give an inside exclusive now they have been onsale a couple of days?

I don't understand why alot of peope constantly talk about Chavs. Why must you devote your lifes to people you hate? Its like you love to hate them or somthing... ;) Please explain, why everything must revolve around what the Chavs will do? Can't you stop thinking about how other people will react and just worry about yourself? Your becoming similar to how they think... Just think about this, or you can "flame" me if you must, to defend yourselfs or whatnot.

Well!

I'm in the US at the moment, and so I decided to go for one! Never thought I would, but gotta say that Mario 64 brought me round. God knows if I'll have it more than a few weeks (especially with the PSP launch around the corner), but who cares! I'm having fun now :p

I'm staying in Jackson, MS if there's anyone nearby!

Encoding movies with 3GP is VERY easy, as Finty says... it's just drag and drop really.

I've been putting all kinds of movies on my PSP... I dunno what you guys are doing that it's taking 8-15 hours!!!

Depending on how high quality I want it to be, I can encode a full 1.5-2 hour movie in about an hour, then it takes about another 10-20 mins to transfer onto the memory stick. Ripping the movie from the DVD is about another 30-45 minutes... so at MAX I'm looking at a 3 hour process, this is for a 2 hour + movie encoded to the higher quality settings. Most of my movies I dont rip from DVD though so usually it's more like 2 hours total process.

This is on a sorta outdated athlon XP 2000+, 512mb of SINGLE SPEED RAM, 5200RPM harddrive, running windows 98.

I have heard peple say that the amount and speed of the RAM has the greatest impact on how fast the movies convert... so a current PC with double speed RAM should go much faster.

I know this isn't a PSP vs. DS thread, but I just want to say, some of you guys REALLY need to stop reaching and pulling out some really absurd reasons for why people will just be so compelled to buy a DS over a PSP.

I do agree with one point made on this thread, it's almost a no brainer that in the case of the many parents who will be going out buying systems for their kids, they would probably more likely pick up a DS than a PSP, because of price and because of the PSP's apparent level of complexity. But it's already been said even by Nintendo and Sony themselves that the target audience for the DS are younger users and the target audience for PSP are a slightly older group, people who normally wouldn't have considered owning a handheld, even. But you know lots of kids will beg their parents into buying a PSP and really dont' give a fuff if it plays movies or whatever.

Takes me about an hour max as well.

Transfer to the memory stick is very quick.

The program is easy and the quality is top notch.

Only reason it takes me 20 minutes to transfer the movie to the mem stick is because I'm still using USB 1.0...

ffs this is a DS thread.

Its almost got to the stage where we can't have a discussion without the Sony fanboys (kotd, bast525, kop_007 etc) hijacking every single thread.

So somebody says something bad about the PSP? Wow!
Just let it go instead of turning every single thread into fanboy central.

Wrong. They are not fanboys (except kotd), it is Nintendo fanboys that say something stupid, and then have to be corrected.

So it takes you 2 or 3 hours to get a 2 hour movie onto your PSP? And why exactly don't you just watch it in that time? Seems like an awful lot of unnecessary effort.
But it's already been said even by Nintendo and Sony themselves that the target audience for the DS are younger users and the target audience for PSP are a slightly older group, people who normally wouldn't have considered owning a handheld, even.
That's completely untrue. Nintendo have never said the DS is targetted at a younger audience, in fact they are constantly reinforcing the fact that it is targetted at everyone, from 5 to 95, and mainly at people who have never played games before or have stopped playing games. The DS sales confirm this, as much more female and older people have been buying them. I can't see why people who normally wouldn't game would get a PSP to be honest. Sony are going for the existing handheld gamer market, seeing as they are bringing nothing new.

When i was at gamestation i saw adults buyin a ds and they took time to look at each game so i don't think they were for there kids.

Which is the bulk of the market, and once you control that games will be aimed at your platform more that your rivals, meaning more releases and higher levels of publicity, which ultimatly leads to even more people buying the system.

Not exactly as has been shown in the DS' sales. I agree sony are going for the existing handheld gamer but sales suggest that existing gamers are willing to embrace innovation. That doesn't mean that they wont go out and get a psp. I expect that most DS buyers will buy a psp at some time. As for more releases well i wouldnt say thats overly true. I mean lets say they take over the bulk of the market, that doesnt mean that companies will flock to it. Thats like saying that Bungie would make halo for ps2 just cause its holding most of the sales in the market.

Well the PSP will get more releases, but that is only because it will be easier to make games for (less creativity involved), meaning it could fill up with shite games.

The problem we have is that because both systems are so differant developers have to chose which one to put there game on, although this could be good, making the game fit the platform rather than the platform fit the game and all that.
