Uae4all Amiga Emulator Port To Gp2x

I prefer not to overclock, but at 250MHz many games run nicely. Cyclone may substitute overclocking, hopefully.
I wouldn't hold your breath. Squidge looked into the performance improvements that might be possible from using cyclone before, but he said that the graphics operations were taking longer than the cpu emu. He also said that cyclone wasn't very compatible. I've had another look at it all this evening, and I'm not very encouraged by what I've tried. I'm going to have a look at sound again anyway.

To balance the negative news of my last post, I thought I'd let you know that I've been playing with the sound this lunchtime.

Results are actually very encouraging - Lemmings says 'Let's Go' in fine fashion :) I'm trying to reduce the buffer size now improve the latency issues I'm currently experiencing.

Expect a version with working sound tomorrow.

Edit: I need to tweak the buffer more, but if anyone wants a sneak preview, you can grab it here:

http://www.vividvillage.com/uae4all0.3.3-sound-demo.zip

It has many rough edges (virtual keyboard broken, exit on menu probably crashes, sound has a bit of an echo on it), but they can all be fixed.

hmm

Do you have a paypal account?

This appears to be faster than the last version I tried. Definately showing promise... and the sound... it is so good to hear the sound, even if it is a little glitchy.

critical you rock... seriously shell out your paypal address.

It's now using paeryn's hw accelerated sdl (but not using HW surfaces, as they don't seem to offer any benefit for the screen update method that uae4all's using).

Glad that you feel there's been some progress, anyway. If you fancy buying me a beer, my paypal address is:

alister [at] criticalhippo.co.uk

Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow, anyway (assuming I don't manage to kill myself ice skating this evening) :)

Great news, man! I have just tried it and the sound slowed down the emulations much less than I had expected. The stuttering occurs whenever there is too much load on the cpu or when accessing fdds, otherwise its perfect (for instance on the title screen of Shadow Dancer, Superfrog, in non-motional cractros etc.).
Thanks critical :)

WOOT chuk rock works!!!

great work...i hope to play soon with marble madness, sword of sodan or xenon..

did someone if the above games works?

We have a wiki where we're gathering compatibility information.

It's here:

http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/UAE4all

So apparently Marble Madness is choppy, no-one's tried Sword of Sodan, and Xenon is slow at 200MHz but looks fine.

I just downgraded my gp2x to 1.2.1 so I could try it with overclocking (could not get any of the overclocking scripts working with UAE4ALL).

Just played turrican @275mHz with sound... sound is almost perfect with what looks like frameskip 2 or 3 on the auto frameskip... this is amazing.

Great news. I'll put an overclocking option into the main menu when I get the chance, if that's the case. I know it's not the best solution, but if it'll do for now, I might as well make it easier to perform the overclocking :)

Yeah this calls for asskissing. Screw PSX, this is what I got my GP2X for. Critical, I can't thank you enough. Implement mounting virtual disk drives and i'll love you forever.

There are for me. Make sure you are using the version of uae4all I've provided at:

http://www.vividvillage.com/uae4all0.3.3-sound-demo.zip

and that you've selected sound 'on' in the menu.

I'm in the middle of compiling a new release at present, so I don't want to revert to that version to test, but I can't see why it wouldn't have worked before unless you weren't using the latest executable.

I've never played Moonstone before - it's impressively gory :)

0.4.0 is now available from http://www.vividvillage.com/

It has sound support (not wildly different from that in the 0.3.3 sneak preview I supplied yesterday, to be honest).

I've added a new graphical indication of which input mode you're switching to when you press the Start button now. Sorry the pictures are quite ugly. Due to this, you need to make sure that you copy the supplied data directory over the top of any existing one, as there are three new files (joystick.bmp, mouse.bmp and remapping.bmp).

Plenty still to do though!
