U. S. 2008 Election Thread

I'm happy that Palin is still our governor. America does need a president that can rally the nation, and McCain just doesn't seem like the rallying type. I am a little scared that the liberals are so powerful in Congress as well. I'm sure there will be plenty of changes made, here's hoping for the best! I'm anticipating that I'll be paying taxes for 2009 instead of getting a rebate check.. On the bright side, maybe we'll get universal health care :) (I would have preferred massively overhauling the regulations and requirements that put health care in the mess it's in, but UHC will be a lot better than leaving things as they are.) Or maybe B.O.'s UHC plan will suck balls and I still won't have any insurance! How exciting!

I thought the GOP's tactiic of distancing themselves from G.W. in this election was filthy back stabbery at it's worst. I think George W.'s administration did a lot more good than they're credited for, and I believe the history books will remember him that way.

Obviously anyone in a foreign country is going to love him, maybe a president who wont screw over other countries for once

Well I live in NJ. I work in NY. 30% of my Income is taxed and I have to pay around $8,000 a year in property taxes. Thats for 25x100ft lot of land with a house.

NJ is a shining example why I don't agree with democrats. Though I don't like republicans either. I would wish for a simpler system. Politicians in general love these overly complex systems that are geared to help the community but because of their complexity it allows tons of room for corruption.

If 100% of the taxes actually went to the systems they were designed for, I would be all for it. But it's a fools game to believe that. And the funny part is people get further and further into this game. When Clinton repealed the Glass-Steagall Act in 99' That's when this happened:

And now everyone's retirement went down the shitter with the market. So what do my democrat friends say? It's not fair, something should be done for my parents.

Well it wasn't fair that people with no money or no credit should have been allowed to get a loan to buy a house. But we allowed them to get subprime mortgages and this is where we are.

I just can't stand politicians. These elections are always lose/lose for me. Hopefully Obama does good, but I truly believe we have to get rid of all of these systems we have in place. They are incredibly wasteful.

I'm very pleased that Obama won. Not only does he seem the better figurehead and have better social policies than McCain (I can't say anything about economic policies yet), but there is indeed something highly symbolic and progressive about America voting an African-American as president. I don't think Obama will be more of the same.

I'm rather less pleased that Proposition 8 passed. This suggests that America is still backward and intolerant; especially when one of the most liberal states votes this way.

People say that Canada is a pretty liberal country too, but even here, legalisation of gay marriage was rammed through parliament despite considerable opposition (even within the Liberal party) and public opinion polls saying that the majority of Canadians were opposed to it. Even then, the legislation was only put before parliament because the Supreme Court was striking down discriminatory marriage statutes province by province. It saddens me but doesn't surprise me that Californians passed such a terrible law, people are still just too creeped out by the thought of two dudes doin' the deed.

For the record, now that gays can get married here we don't have men fucking eachother in the streets, we don't have people trying to marry livestock, paedophilia hasn't been legalised, God hasn't smote the entire country, or any of that. Things are pretty much continuing as they always have, so if there's anyone here who supports/ed Prop 8 or similar laws, you really have no logical argument for denying these people based on where they put their sex organs. If you don't want to see two men fucking, stop watching gay porn.

Haha, logical argument? Their logical argument would be "the bible says marriage is for a man and a woman only".

Can't argue with these religious nuts. At least racism fades over time, through generations; religion will always be here, and the same narrow-minded views will always drive people to do ignorant things. Until religion does us all in...and believe me, it *will* be the death of our species.

I think whats even better is that he hasn't even been President elect for 24 hours and already the market is plunging on the idea that he is going to be President to begin with.

This country is going to have a rough 4 years, but the good thing is it will only be 4 years, he won't be a 2 term president, but will the damage be to great to fix.

Republicans are the scapegoat for everything, 2/3 of the government is controlled by Democrats and look where we are, since 2006, look where we were before 2006, 14,000 point stock market, record unemployment. now the Democrats control 3/3 of government, there's no one to blame now, this will be an eye opener and this will kill the Democrat party, especially if they all go gung ho on socialism.

What the hell am I saying, they'll still blame Bush.

Obama certainly seems to come across well to us 'foreigners'. He seems to have drive and energy - lets see what he can achieve. And to those in Europe, especially UK, that say they don't care as it doesn't affect them - get real!

One thing that fascinates me is the guy gets elected and the out-going president is still 'in charge' for 76 days. Seems weird.

edit:typo

Osama has fun now. The terrorist wanted that Obama was the president. He was afraid from McCain... <_<

I don't really like either side. Truly, the only difference if you are a republican or democrat is your definition of 'fair'

Democrats say it isn't fair for these big corporations to have as much as they do.

Republicans say it isn't fair to take money from the people who have and give it to the have-nots.

I think logically I agree with republicans more, only because if we were talking about racing, if someone was the fastest runner, do we put chains on him so he is as fast as everyone else?

That is an extreme example that would never happen, because if it did, people would actually get upset. I am already crazy upset with how much taxes I pay, but I am waiting for everyone else to actually say something as well.

But, whatever. C'est la vie. The only thing I can do is to save as much of my money as I can and invest it correctly so that I can retire early.

You don't understand, how those things work, believe me ;)
A military moron is the best that could happen to those terrorists, a clean and easy target.
I hope Obama gets diplomacy straight, it's definitely the more effective weapon if you know how to use it.

I am happy as well as concerned.

Obama is a smart, respectful, and pragmatic person. I think that he is the better choice at this time but...

The USA is a mess. The economy is past the point of no return I fear. Businesses are closing and laying off workers, Expect unemployment to reach 10%, the housing market to continue to fall, and the stock markets to continue to collapse. Basically we are headed into a depression. There are just too many problems. Out of control deficit due to two costly wars, bailouts of wallstreet, jobs gone overseas to China, just a sea of red ink everywhere. Trillions of dollars are being borrowed and there is no end in sight. The Bush administration has basically ruined us.

At this time I don't think Jesus Christ himself (if you believe such a thing) could save us.

While I think Obama will try hard to help as much as he can I really don't think there is anything he can really do except maybe to slow down the inevitible collapse slightly. Instead of trying to bail out a sinking ship with a spoon, Obama will use a bucket, but in the end we still sink. What will then happen when the collapse happens on his term is that he will be unfairly blamed for it. The country will be angry and vote back in the Republicans in 4 years continuing the spiral.

I hope I am wrong but all indicators don't look good.
