The PawByte Codenamed "Flyght" Console

I don't get the feeling this is any sort of scam, but it does strike me as a pretty hopeless business proposition from what I understand of the project.

@ theweirdn8 :

1) Do you plan to use an off the shelf motherboard for this? If so which one?

2) Which is more accurate? The specs in the OP of this thread or those on your website?

3) What do you mean by 'We don't think we can outdo Sony in terms of price and quality for blueray right now...'

4) Why list the GPU output as 1080? Show me a PC based system from the last 5 years that can't output higher than 1080 and I'll be amazed

From my perspective you'd be far better concentrating on the software side of things & releasing something that would allow uses to set up a multiboot environment on an existing PC that would then have an option to run as per your console.

Please don't think that people here are trying to knock you for what you are doing, I for one love the general idea of it, it's just that with a little logical thought and a clear look at the current market you seem pretty much doomed to commercial failure. How will you compete with Ouya etc.?

I'm having a very hard time figuring out what this is:

1) Just spam.

2) A setup for some sort of con later on.

3) The developers really being as clueless as it appears.

I mean, it reminds me of nothing so much as a very, very shady "auction" I ended up on in a hole-in-the-wall place in London 15 years ago. "Ok, ok, we have these amazing things to bid on later people, ok, look over here, a CD player, and over here a VCR, and you can decide what you pay yourselves, OK, now, I have something secret here in this bag, what is it - you don't know, what do you want to bid for it, eh? To stay in the auction, you will need to bid now, OK, how many will give me a fiver for the Secret that's in the bag, look at these shelves here, with VCRs and televisions all round, do I have a fiver? A tenner? A tenner to stay in the auction! Who wants to stay in the auction for these things, raise your hands, yeah, thats right! Now, here..." And so on. Big con game.

And, yes, "Don't attribute to malice..." and so on, but I'm really debating with myself whether this farce should be allowed to go on. The news updates have at least convinced me to not click any link given by theweirdn8, ever.
Maybe all 3, perhaps?

@Binky

This topic was mainly to get feedback, which I am loving right now.

Also, the system isn't being heavily marketed at all, seeing that we are still designing tons of things and we want to

get every gamer possible and expand the industry to even more girl gamers.

A handheld is differnt than a console, we want to keep the center of gaming on TVs, projectors, etc.

Also, current gen console specs are less than many standard PCs now.

It isn't about the spects, it's about the game.

@monstercameron

I will contact the engineers about your request. I'm not designing the hardware, I'm more of the software, PR and Organizer.

@Moxie

1) I'm not spamming, just getting feedback and making people

2)There is no con here, people will buy a console and software once its out and hopefully back our kickstarter on the way.

3)What drives you to say this?

Also, please await for Fields of Fresh to be completed before giving a review.

I feel as if your words have even deeper origins. Please let me know what concerns you.

@SONY

When you say news update, do you mean our newsletter?

@Mr_Loon

Thank you for your remnant of hope.  Now to answer your questions.

1)We are still figuring things out in regards to the board used. We are focusing alot of our efforts on designing things like the controller and games first, so we hope to answer your question fully in the near future.

2)The specs on the site are PLANNED specs.

3)Sony is known for having the best BlueRay player and we believe it will be a tragedy to try to outdo them in what we are not specialist in, we will rather focus on gaming, because it's not about the video, it is about the game. BlueRay may be nice though for game discs... It is a matter of time, money and resources though.

4)This is a console, the GPU is a matter of price. We don't want to release an expensive system, BUT expect HD.

It is better to fail than to never tried at all. We just tested Unity3D and the new Game Maker export option on our system and it works. We are trying to make the process as neato as possible to port things over.

Thank you all for the great feedback.

It is indeed tremendous to have such great feedback.

I'm so excited to see where our future as gamers go.

None of that made any sense to me.

Also, you should use spell checker.

What is your primary language?

My question towards you was in regards to your news source. Are you a subscriber to our newsletter?

1. English is the only language I speak.

2. Not once did I ask you a question.

3. I know nothing about a news source.

4. No...and I don't intend to subscribe, ever.

5. You haven't given us a reason to trust you.

2)When you said "Maybe all 3" I answered all that was in the quote box, which made mention to the news source.

4)That is fine

5)I understand, trust is built by delivery on product.

Thank you for pointing that out. Chase found that typo earlier this week, I thought I updated the site to fix that I guess not.

Site updated. Thank you for your support.

well im not convinced its a con. But there was a lot of typos on the website and alot of typos in your posts here.@weird and 8 It does not look professional is all.

Also best not to do much pr until you have some more concrete specs.Early impressions stick in peoples minds. Give us info when you have something concrete to show basically.

@Theweirdn8 - Well if nothing else, you do show great patience and composure under fire.  There's something to be said for that.

I am not "giving a review". I am seeing you saying a lot of frankly disconnected stuff, throwing wild plans in the air, pretending to launch a console based on boring standard hardware, saying that you've "designed the controller" when all you have is a 3D render of it, saying stuff like

It isn't about the spects, it's about the game.
...when all you have listed is three games, none of them finished, all of them made by yourself. In short, you are touting a non-existing console which, if it existed, would be more expensive than actually building it from scratch, with no games and a controller that you call "designed" when you have a sketch-up of it. And so you want feedback on this. Which you get, uniformly to the tune "You have no selling point, no console, and no games. Nobody in their right mind would buy this". To which you reply stuff like:
Thank you all for the great feedback.

...as if anybody had been in the least positive, or implied that they believed this had anything to do with "our future as gamers". You also take this feedback as a reason to state in your event that you have "the blessing of the openpandora project" or whatever hogwash it was. When you most clearly haven't, unless the act of not throwing you off the board is "a blessing".

There is some sort of cognitive disconnect here.

To which I can find two reasonable explanations:

1) This is a con of some sort

The point of the project is to harvest email addresses for spam, or tricking gullible people in supporting a not-quite-kickstarter-campaign (just like that one a few months ago that used a website that looked very muck like kickstarter, only it snagged your money right away with no return guarantee), or placing a preorder, or somesuch. That would explain your perseverance in the face of facts and adversity - Your goal, then, would be to be visible to the gullible targets as much as possible, hoping to score enough punters for a quick exit.

2) You do not understand what people are telling you

This can have several causes in itself. You might be clueless, as I wrote above, and really do not understand words like "selling points", or the massive distance between having a 3D render of something and actually having a working controller, or the market realities of parts prices. That being my theory, I try to express myself as bluntly as possible. This is not positive feedback. Nobody is thinking this is a good idea.

You might also be deluded, as in having another view of reality. Maybe God told you that this project would be a success, or maybe you read one of the books that say stuff like "As long as you visualise your goal, positive thinking will make it a reality", or something like that. Reality check: It does not work like that.

Either way, you are not doing yourself any good. If you, against all reason, still think this is a good idea, then show us a reason to trust you. If not, I will still conclude that this is either a con or the rantings of a clueless person.

I'd go with Number 1.

If this is indeed a con, then we might need to take some sort of precautionary action, so that people don't get seriously conned.

Wow, no punches held there. I have to more or less agree with it though :/

Personally, I think popular motivational edicts like "it is better to try and fail than to have never tried at all" or "you can accomplish anything you put your mind to" are crippling things to hold onto at face value into adulthood. It's important to work hard towards your dreams but it's even more important to have realistic dreams and be able to clearly recognize your strengths, weaknesses, and limitations. Everyone only has a little bit of time on this planet and you don't want to end up regretting having spent it on things that were doomed to never go anywhere.

Hello everyone,

I thank God for each and everyone of you and your concerns.

I did not intend to make anyone think the product is done, it is a work in progress. This topic should be treated more as a development and feedback log. My team is well aware of the issues you all have brought to out attention. We work day and night for you gamers. It is not a walk in a park at all to develop a new console, but that does not mean to simply give up.

It was better to make this forum topic now, then to be labeled a copycat system later due to recent developments in the industry. That was what I reasoned at least.

The selling point is the games, you may not see finished products, but games take time to develop.

Our artists, engineers, 3d modelers, programmers and musicians are not doing PawByte full time, we are doing our best here and we take all of your feedback as positive because it is positive for the greater good.

Thank each and everyone of you for your time. I am indeed grateful for your feedback.

And God? WT ****** ***!???

You're a complete joke, mate. Here's an animated .gif for you and 'your team'...

One simple question:

Why should I buy your console?

To make a successful computing device, you either need better hardware or better software (or a much better price) than your competitors.

The paw byte is

  1. based on generic PC hardware
  2. Using Arch Linux with an oddball package manager (with few or no games currently available)
  3. Niche, small volume and therefore expensive
The above means that devs have no reason to develop high-quality exclusive games

so is the pandora(atleast for the most part)...
