Project Ninja

Or the Super Trooper. :p

mr.mirko has said (Also on the ninja site) that there will not be a touch screen.

This is a quick question to anyone who knows the answer.

Can a 640x480 resolution LCD screen display a 320x240 image at full screen natively without software intervention ?, Some are saying its not possible  .

The reason i ask is that all LCD monitors have the possiblity of displaying other modes lower than their native resolution, So thought it could be possible with an lcd. Please share your knowledge. :)

as stated before, no, its not possible, you need either hardware or software scaleing wich booth look ugly, i think 320*240 would be enugh again, maybe a 300ish res, but 640*480 is way to much, it would cost more, drain more power, and will only be better for some apps, while nearly all emus would be worse and need scaleing for it.

The scaling on desktop TFT screens is done by a chip inside the screen. Neither TFT-LCD screens for handheld applications nor any CPU´s have the possibility to do scaling in hardware.
The Zodiac´s GPU is used by YoYo´s emulator LJZ to stretch and smooth the screensize of the emulated consoles very nicely without speed loss, similar techniques are used by the PSP,
but without a chip that does this, it would have to be done in software and that makes things slower.

I don't know if I'm wrong in thinking this, but the Project Ninja site states "homebrew handheld"--not "gp32-wannabe."

Well if you go over to the site EvilDragon posted and have a look at the poll, over half the people there have basically voted that it's a 'GP32 wannabe' as you put it. And let's face it, how many people outside of this and a few other specialist boards are gonna know about it? It's basically shaping up to be the handheld that will succeed the GP32, whether you like it or not.

Yes, but I'd pay a couple more bucks for my $200+ handheld to be a spiffy watch also. Also games can use it a la Pokemon/Tomagotchi, and apps too.

Well of all the ***** ********** stupid ******** ****** **********

(calms down abit) you want to buy a US$200+ device to run a tamagotchi?
What a waste.... and if you want a watch, BUY ONE, they're sure not this pricey.

Cost of capacitor for RTC adds $1 max to cost...SO WHATS THE PROBLEM, HUH?

And no, I wouldn't spend $200 for a watch, but if it only costs $1 more, why not.
Besides, theres a lot more than can be done besides Tamogatchi or a watch (those are just my bad examples). For example I've seen real time used to add more realism in RPGs.

No problem, just saying I don't see any point to it.

edit: and as for price, I meant cost of the whole unit vs cost of a watch, not a RTC+cap

edit2: I would only see the point in RTC if it was going to have any sort of wireless internet capabilities. And for a homebrew, I don't think many people would take advantage of that even if it did. Not in any serious way anyway.

Well I see no point in not doing it, like what Vimacs said.

I read the website, and since their still wondering about the screen and said no touch screen, I say we should use the original BLU screen or maybe even the BLU+ screen.

Fainlly something we agree on!

I too say use the BLU or BLU+ screen. That screen is ace, so why change?

Edit: to trooper's post below, a 4" screen is even better! as long as it is as good as the one used in BLU/BLU+

What about a 4" 320x240 screen, I know the GP32`s screen is nice a big, But if the difference in cost between a 3.5" and a 4" screen is minimal, It would make sense to go for the 4" screen, Wouldn`t it ?.

I don't know.. .I would like to keep it as close to GP32 dimensions as possible because I think that's pretty much the perfect portable console size. So I would like to keep the 3.5" screen; It's more than big enough.

A 4" screen will like the GP32 screen without the screen holder, i think it will be nice to have a screen like that, because another system can be found to seal the screen (no other handheld have a screen holder like the GP32). We will have a 4" screen instead of having a 3.5", but it won't take more place ;)

Things that cost next to nothing to implement should be implemented, simply because it would create a wider target audience, and thus would most likely help to sell more of these. Also, a wider audience means the possibility of a broader range of software. It would be nice to be able to use the same machine to keep your todo list and appointments etc.

Now, since we are going to try and emulate as many machines as possible with this console, it would help a lot if we could incorporate something that could easily emulate the ic's from old machines, and leave the main processor for other tasks. The best thing for this would be some type of FPGA - they can be used to emulate almost any existing digital chip - for example, a Z80, NES or SNES GPU or SPU, etc.

Just imagine doing snes emulation with the GPU in hardware :)
