But you can't ensure that everyone you contact uses it as well. Unless the developer explicitely makes the program XMPP-incompatible or does not implement server-to-server communication and enforces your server you can use it to chat with every other XMPP-based communication system. See the history of the Facebook chat and Google Talk for some examples.

If the client does not enforce E2E and throws an error on trying to contact anyone who does not use a client that supports the same extension, you might not be using any kind of encryption at all without noticing it.
Wouldn't anyone you contact with E2E enabled who doesn't have it just see a bunch of seemingly random garbage text?

It depends on the client I suppose, but usually (at least in the ones I use) it is just specifies that the message was encrypted, you don't see the random garbage text

You'd need to initialize an encrypted session first, the perfect forward secrecy part of the encryption prevents you from just dumping some encrypted data onto someone - unless the client fails to notice that a previous session has ended, but that can happen when both sides keep using E2E encryption as well. OTR used to keep displaying error messages in this case, IIRC the ability to automatically start a new session and possibly resending the message was added in a later version.

To be honest, I'm not even sure how Tor builds its directory servers. Presumably Tox needs similar to set up its onion routing, but I'm not even pretending to understand it in any depth.

Same here. IIRC, they modified the onion protocol for their use, though I never knew how. I want to know more, so I started reading their protocol spec. There are contradictions in there, but in most cases it's clear which is more sensible, and some statements just cause confusion. Still interesting:

@Grench Continuing the 3D discussion from the Beauty Competition thread, can you post the command line output when running SuperTux?

Otherwise once I have a Pyra I should be able to sort out the last of the blocking X11+3D issues, then the tiler_shim will go away for most use cases anyway.

Well, I got minicom running again on my workstation and am monitoring the OS pieces. I'm not sure if there is anything in there at the OS level that is going to be of help in this though.

Launching Supertux 2 does not seem to scroll anything into the serial monitoring. So, I'm assuming that by "post the command line output when running SuperTux," you must be referring to doing this by another method.

So, how do I generate the output that you are wanting to see? Start by assuming I'm a bit of an idiot.

Launch it from a terminal. Probably type something like 'supertux2' after the # prompt. It'll likely spit some stuff into STDOUT which'll go into that window, which will get overdrawn by the supertux window coming up, but should still be there when you quit it.

I don't know, but I suspect serial monitoring only gives you kernel messages, the kind of thing that ends up in dmesg. The output from supertux isn't usually considered important for system engineers, at least every time you run it.

Launched from $ = launches to slide show open screen.
Launched from # = bash: supertux2: command not found

Neither one put anything additional into the terminal to log or debug from.

Ah, sorry, I used the wrong prompt character. Trust me to use my memory and not check for the first time. If when launched from a user account it spat out no debugging info and there's also nothing in dmesg then I guess you've fulfilled your brief. You could check if it supports a --debug flag or something like that, which I guess is the next thing I'd do.

Peruse '$ man supertux2' or 'supertux2 --help' if the former doesn't work, and see what options it supports.

tiler_shim needs to run the program with some environment variables, so you need to run the program using the included run.sh

So do something like this (make sure to use your real username in the first line, the first line is not needed at all if you are using a terminal window on-device rather than serial/SSH).

Being written by serious people, Debian does not put games on the path so you need to prefix them with /usr/games.

Code:
export DISPLAY=:0 XAUTHORITY=/home/Grench/.Xauthority
cd tiler_shim
./run.sh /usr/games/supertux2

Ah okay. I'm not sure but I'd expect to see a few more games on the Pyra using windowed display given the increase in resolution and moderately larger screen, especially if the device is to be used to accept phone calls and text messages at the same time.
