Preorders Have Started. (Previously named starts in two hours)

I figured it out.
Note on the specifications page it says

The PLS8 does not support VoLTE, voice over LTE. It falls back (CSFB) on 3G (or less) to send and receive voice calls. Which is fine since that's how most carriers work anyway: it seems very few actually support VoLTE.
But prior to LTE, Verizon was CDMA: the PLS8 CANNOT fall back on their old network. So it can't use the LTE network for voice and it can't use the fallback which it doesn't support so at the very least Verizon would be data only. It's possible that other carriers could still use it for voice as the -US and -E can, but it's also likely that since it was built for Verizon they may have stripped out the voice feature entirely to save money.
The PLS8-V, with only LTE support definitely cannot do voice for anyone, it is strictly LTE data only and not very useful.

Thank you for your efforts in sleuthing this out. So, do I have this right? I.e. would these statements be correct?

So, for anyone in the US to have a chance to use it for both data and voice, it has to be PLS8-US.
PLS8-US will likely work for both voice and data on AT&T and T-mobile.
PLS8-US will definitely not work for voice but may get some data coverage on Verizon.
There is NO option for a chip that would enable voice on Verizon - not even the PLS8-X or PLS8-V.

Accurate?

That is my understanding.

Pyra-For-President.png

we leave everything in your very capable nubs.

i can also see the demand to see the Pyra's birth certificate, however.

There's no question about it though; the mother was from Texas, so even though the Pyra was born in Germany, it got US citizenship.

PYRA: With bash as standard
Though I prefer zsh as set up in Arch's liveUSB.

PYRA phone capability: sendSMS 'D&D session tonight at 19:00; remember to bring your miniatures' $(awk '/RPGparty/ {print $1}' contacts.txt)

PYRA: Battery included, but optional

A pocketful of buttons

Must control everything

Yea, for me it's the lack of spyware. So if there's a US 4G version, on some networks (like AT&T) it could work as a phone? I was expecting to use data + SIP service, or the like. What sort of software for linux is there even to work as a cellphone? I also always figured I could tether to a phone / hotspot, but replacing a phone might be even better.

I considered buying a Fairphone 2 (since it's not only fair but modular too), but will hold off until I see how the Pyra's functions in this regard develop since I don't like Android's blob and spyware and the Ubuntu phones don't seem to be as far in their progress either and I'd still prefer a good Debian with more ways to control than only a touchscreen.

If Pyra does its job well (and I guess it will), I'll probably just get a small clamshell phone with several weeks of standby battery time again since my old one is really old by now and doesn't even support a calendar further than 2015...

I hate to bring it up, but cellular networks can easily triangulate your position based on signal strength from cell towers and track your location using that data. :tinfoil:
The police have used this data to check out the alibis of suspects.

I was finally able to get my transaction to go. I had to call up my bank's customer service and then they had to contact the fraud team, and finally everything worked out. I am pretty excited for this!

As long as it's possible to deactivate the chip easily (which was written here somewhere), I'm good.

Long time lurker here, since the early days of Pandora. I'm impressed with the way this project is being handled and the product just looks amazing, so I figured it was time to get off the fence and dive in. Just pulled the trigger on a U.S. Mobile Edition 4Gb. Awesome job to everyone working on this, i'm giddy with excitement.

There's even an Electrical Switch so you don't have to rely on the CSS Firmware that the Modem is really off and not Transmitting anything AFAIK.

Are you sure about that? The last update I read (a long time ago), ED was saying that there will be no hardware switch but he will instead wire a led so that you can know if the chip is on.

I think that is what he means, turning on a GPIO to switch on the cell modem is essentially an electrical switch I suppose.

Smartphones have systemd? Which ones? How do you know, that's what the recipient's got? (EDIT: Discard that question - I misread the above as "than your smartphone".) Or did I get that wrong and the Pyra will ship with Devuan?
