It doesn't recognize SMC cards anymore. It says something along the lines "card not found, or card not properly inserted" in white text on a black background. I tried 2 or 3 different cards, and all of them show the same message. The weird thing is that this happened out of the blue, I didn't drop the unit or fry it or anything like that.

The reason seems to be that the pins do not contact the SMC card anymore.

I found that "fattening" the SMC card helps this problem. What I did was add some thickness to my SMC by taping some layers of paper behind it. Not too many, as you won't be able to squeeze it back in the SMC slot.
Two small stamp sized pieces did the trick for me. Give it a try!

I added many layers of scotch tape to the card's back, and tested as I added more, to no results. I opened the unit to check out the SMC slot (it seems to be soldered on the board, so there's no chance of opening it up and unbending any bent pins), and there seems to be one pin bent down, on one of the ends. I have no idea if that's normal or not, or if those pins are the ones who connect to the SMC at all - I'm totally blind on these kinds of things.

On an interesting note, when there's no SMC inserted, when you press Play the black screen appears automatically telling you that there's no card inserted. However, when I put a card in and press Play, it first goes to the loading data screen, then it quickly shows that black screen. That means that it detects the card in some manner, so the problem could be elsewhere.

Thanks for your help slaanesh!

Too bad both live on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean... Shipping and repair costs may not be worth it for me anymore. I use the GP2X now anyway, and since I started coding for it the Gp32 really didn't see much action.
