Pandora's Rival: The Gizmondo

the REAL handheld life begins when handheld is released to the public [ you could buy it in shop ]. In that matter Pandora and new gizmondo is in the same positions. Personally i believe that new gizmondo will be a good concurent for pandora if they really release it. And at the end. ... let the better win... no matter giz or pandora.

btw. Imho, pandoras cover design still sucks. I know Craig want to put all next gen stuff in one box, but for gods sake... who needs a 2 pseudo-analog controllers-* in a handheld ? and a DUAL SDHC slots ...

*-Only useable for psx emulation / n64 emu .. but only game that REQUIRES a REAL analog controller in PSX is ... Saru: Get You // Ape Escape. On N64 emu we dont need analog controll either.. toi be honest: why dont put there a touchpad for ScummVM interpreter :D <LOL>. We need to remember one thing. We need a HANDy handheld, not EEE mini clone.
You really need to think beyond just a couple of emulators that can run on this system. That is just the tip of the iceberg for what Pandora can do!

How about home brew games that want to use analog controls? Well, now that world is opened wide up to places never possible before in a hand held. How about modifications to open sourced games like Quake and Doom? This sounds like a wonderful way to add strafe movements even without the added benefit of the keypad.

Then there is something I am truly looking forward to: easy web browser navigation. One nub can be a scroll wheel. The further you pull it down, the faster you scroll. Personally, I hate dragging my finger across a touch screen to do this. It's messy and you sometimes end up hitting links with your first press down on the display. The other nub can be used as an on screen mouse. Text is small on a high resolution 4.3" screen and it is hard to tap on links that are grouped close together. The buttons built into the nubs make for great right and left mouse buttons so you can have as much versatility as you are used to in a full PC.

I'm getting tired of the EEE comparisons. Ooh, it's clamshell with a display and a keyboard so it must be an EEE clone. Yeah, those are some pretty specific qualities that no one else has ever tried before....okay then.

Have you ever coded for the Gizmondo? If not, then I encourage you to attempt it before calling it a powerful console. Yes, it has a 400Mhz ARM, and yes, it has NVidia graphics, but just try and use that combination for 2D games.
well, 2d via gpu would be great, much more than two processors like the gp2x. That means that you can have fast rotozooming, bilinear filtering, very fast multiple parallax scrolling etc
It's all about if gizmondo guys would make also a decent sdk or crappy stuff like gph did

Not all of the pictures and videos are made by the makers of pandora, do you realize that?
So what? Is it the only material around about Pandora isn't it?

I'll start to think about pandora only when someone will stop about only making floods of words for the various hardware pieces and show something real, atm for me it's like talking about witch features Duke Nukem Forever will have, only with the difference that 3d Realms did a lot of great games meantime

BTW.

One question to MWeston:

The pandora cover design project is a definitive closed case?, or you will try to do some improvements? im thinking about more shiny cover like JXD or PSP.
And isnt it better idea to remove keyboard + add USB HOST to connect any keyboard from PC-* to Pandora ?

*-There are plenty wery good key's available in shops [ mini keyboards, wireless keyboards, ... ]

Pandora already has USB HOST.

It has been stated in a couple threads that the phyiscal design is pretty much finalized. It will definately be a clamshell design with a qwerty keypad. Some of the connectors might get shuffled around, but the general layout is set. The keypad discussion has been done to death in half a dozen other threads. If you would like more background on why the decision was made, feel free to read through them.

i wonder if anyone will break the silence or if this is the last we will hear about a (so called) gizmondo comeback?

lol, you should know how the Gizmo-hype works by now..

They announce something.. nothing gets said for a long while.. then if you're lucky, they'll suprise you with a sudden release of somesort.. or they might just hope people forget about it.. tongue.gif

snagged this off the giz forum. even the gizmondo fanboys have their doubts about this "comeback"

Well, in all honesty, that's not too far from the attitude to GamePark. There was at least one failed European release, and I'm fairly sure there were two. There was the GPi that never got made. There was the whole BLU+ "kill compatibility without telling anyone" shenanigan. There were those Capcom licenses that simply sat there and mouldered.

Oh, and then GPH branched off, and they killed themselves by trying to overcomplicate the potential XGP line (although of course, there is a possibility that this was a cover to jump ship on a company that needed a new face - I remember seeing a compelling, if not completely convincing, that GP deliberately went bankrupt having to all intents and purposes become GPH).

Most certainly not the best track record a company can have. Though not as bad as the whole Gizmondo affair...

Yeah, when one of the people leading the project and seeking funding for it is fresh out of prison, that kind of puts a damper on the whole thing. ^_^

lol, you all are only speculating, the truth is that GP, GPH and Gizmondo actually did consoles out in worldwide market and makers of Pandora not.
With that i'm not saying that pandora is vaporware or something, but at the moment that gizmondo II is surely most real than Pandora

I'd like to pull your attention to the fact that none of the members of the Pandora team are convicted felons as far as we know... I would have to say that I have greater hopes for a company that is so far only a small internet supplier of various gadgets than one that was involved in a heap of controversy only two years ago.

Well, sure, but thats because the Gizmondo II is basically a Gizmondo with minimal changes (it can run homebrew). The Pandora is a completely new product.

Fancy a wager on which comes out first? :p I'll bet you a pint of warm bitter it isn't a new gizmondo.

The Gizmondo has the worst design ever and the d-pad looks pretty inconvenient.. And I don't really expect that last thing to change

The trolls are out!

All the stuff that's in pandora is what makes it as excellent as it will be. If all you want is an N64, then go buy an N64 or that monstrous N64 DS attachment. Pandora is more than just some POS rehash of a GBA.

Dual analog controllers....what else has that? I guess you've never heard people bitch about the single pathetic analog controller on the PSP? Ever hear of Quake3 ?

If dual SDHC slots are there and work, more power to them. One use: with USB host capability it allows pandora to be a pretty complete "vacation" machine to manage all those digital photos.

If you want to bitch, bitch about possible ergnomics/hand cramps, which if there are any I *hope* they get identified and worked out before getting moulds.

well, actually that's another point that advantages gizmondo on launch period, the possibilties to be not vaporware and so on... :\

maybe, but the Pandora one will be worst as I don't really expect that thing to change too :p

My only dubts about the "Gizmondo mk2" are: will it have the power to build a community like the gp2x one?
I wonder also about the price, i think it needs to be much lower than psp one to have only a chance, will be lower than the Pandora one for sure thinking about all that stuff craig's team planned\promised

Actually, I'd say it's the other way around. People will buy the Pandora because of whats it claimed to be capable of (and hopefully due to reviews/etc later).

With the new Gizmondo, people know it's crap before it's even released, so why buy it?

I love how you accuse Gizmondo naysayers of merely speculating while all you actually do in this thread is speculate. The truth is that Gizmondo has a TERRIBLE rep right now, but the folks behind the Pandora only have a reputation as a fairly good reseller of independent hand helds and as community-involved people.

EDIT:
Say what you want about the Pandora, but at least the Pandora makers don't make claims like "Exciting Psychic Worlds!" in their announcements. Personally, that sounds like marketing speak for "We're completely insane and will fuck our investors over."
