When OP first chose to use a TI chip the 3530 wasn't even officially available. OMAP3430 (which as far as I'm aware is identical) was announced, but you couldn't get any yet. Naturally something better than 3530 wouldn't have been available. I don't even know if it's possible to order anything better.
THIS. Thank you for laying it out in plain English. How could it even be possible for Pandora to be faster than parts that didn't exist when it was designed? ...it's very strange some people continue to argue this (although discussing Pandora 2 in "Other Consoles" or "Off Topic" is welcome). Not only that, but it likely would have added who knows how much $$$ to the price of the Pandora. I'm sure the team wanted to keep the costs reasonable...otherwise they could have added a dishwasher and bucket seats. It's like the people who want it to have an OLED screen...yeah, sure it could have one...for a lot more money (at the time, and probably still).
I recall the early days when they announced the Pandora had gained Bluetooth, because it was easy enough to drop it right into the design (similar enough to the wifi chip they were already using, or something like that). I would guess that's a little easier than dropping a new SoC in (again, one that wasn't available yet). A similar bonus happened when they doubled the size of the NAND. We're already getting a better device than the 'original' Pandora! B)
Also (rant mode ON), surely the logical thing for people who want PSP's and PSP2's and iPhones is to just buy those devices! If PSP/iPhone games have value for you, then they're worth plunking down your cash for. When you actually buy the platform hardware/software you want to support...then chances are you will see more devices and more games from those companies. Or have the basic concepts of commerce completely changed since I went to bed last night?
I have an iPod Touch (which I bought while waiting for Pandora), I use it every day for various things, and I don't mind dropping a couple bucks on the odd touchscreen time waster puzzle game...BUT anything that needs a proper joystick or d-pad will be a helluva lot better on Pandora. Not to mention a real keyboard for gaming, web, email, notes, and anything else you can use a real keyboard for. Pandora will stomp the GP2X for the keyboard alone, plus more power, screen, battery life, clam shell, sleep mode etc. I have a GP2X MarkII and was very happy with it for two years. But the battery life is shameful, as is the d-pad. But I'm glad I bought it, as it introduced me to this community...for better or worse, some days.
Pandora is coming folks, we're really close now...and maybe a PSP2 is coming, and you know a new iPhone is coming every year...there's plenty of room for everybody, there is no ONE device to rule them all. If you want those, buy 'em. You're allowed to own more than one. But why wait two years for a device that doesn't do what you want? That's crazy.
Also, this isn't a huge corporation putting millions of R&D and 3rd party support into Pandora. This is a few like-minded hobbyists, who share a common goal of creating the best open source driven handheld. And if you don't think it takes Big Gaming Company years to develop their next system, think again. Plus they'd develop a bunch of different concepts at once, and market the one with the least amount of problems (except for MS' XBox360)
. Big companies experience the same delays, mistakes, deadlines, and problems OP has...they just don't blog about it and share the emails from the manufacturers.
Only when Pandora is finally in our hands, will we discover the truth. It'll either be fast enough for you, or it won't. Actually, it'll become 'faster' over time as developers are able to optimize software for it. It's fast enough for me, but I just want a portable C64, Amiga & Genesis. Anything beyond that is a huge bonus, or exists on another device. Pandora doesn't have a camera either, but I know people want one for Pandora 2. There is no perfect device. Say it with me now: "There is no perfect device." See, don't we feel better now? (rant mode OFF here, I suppose)
