Nope, it is not. The Polygons Per Sec is only important for 3D games. So emulation of any system up until the PSX/N64 which didn't use any 3D CPU, the Polygons per Sec are pointless.
It's the 2D accelerators that are more important in this case

For commercial gaming, yes. But even the PSP would be inferior, as there are some good commercial games - and we will most probably never have big ones on the Pandora. Check out Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core, for example. It's an impressive game and runs perfect on the PSP.
It will take a long time until such impressive games will reach the Pandora, if ever.
But you will never be able to run a normal Linux Desktop on the PSP (well, you could, if somebody would port one... but does that make sense?)

One good thing about games is that the Pandora runs a standard Linux system. Pickle did port tons of games and emulators already.

And that is something you can't do on a PSP
But what I was trying to add to my post was that making the OS and emulators is the difficult part. And if the Pandora Team actually made a PSP-emulator for an ARM-architecture (with other emulators) and optimized the OS and made a pleasing UI that could've take 2 years. And when they were done, new and improved technology will become available. So the Pandora team would finish the project by having something that REALLY stands out of all other devices.
On top of this new functions may be available and these new ideas may be added to the system while still in development.
For eg, if accelerometre was never in the original design but was added during development phase when choosing candidate hardware.
Well, the "Pandora Team" isn't doing any emulators (okay, some devs which help with OS/Kernel development like notaz did do emulators, too, but that's not the main work to do on the current system we have).
The Team is developing the core OS and the system itself. Most apps will come from the community, I'm pretty sure about that.
Look for OMAP4 and Tegra2, both of which will be out this year. Note these are obviously too late for Pandora, but I'm ready to bet A9-based SoC's will be mainstream long before 2010 is over
Well, the same SoCs running with higher clockrate is nothing special, it will obviously happen sometime. But this doesn't need a completely new design, you could simply make a new batch with those new SoCs if they are pin-compatible.
Regarding those A9-based ones... I doubt they will become mainstream in 2010.
The Cortex A8 has been released approx. 1,5 - 2 years ago. How long did it take for the first mainstream devices to appear?
When a new SoC is out, devs can start to develop a new device around it. And we now all do know how long that can take....
Yes, the Pandora will not be powerful enough to EMULATE PS2 or XBox Games - but such a CPU doesn't exist yet.

While the current OMAP is no technical wonder, the only major devices I know that use the same one is the N900 (which is out since two months) and the new iPhone (which is out since three months).

I checked
the technical data of the new iPhone, it can do 667MHz, has 32kB L1 Cache and NO L2 Cache (compared to the OMAP 3530 which has 112 KB (DSP) and 32 KB (ARM Cortex-A8) L1 Cache and 256 KB (ARM Cortex-A8) and 96 KB (DSP) L2 Cache).
I couldn't find out if the iPhone 3 GS has a DSP, but the Pandora does have one.
The GPU used in the iPhone is the PowerVR MBX-Lite which is a bit slower than the MBX. The Pandora uses the PowerVR SGX which is superior (and even fully backwards compatible to the POWERVR MBX).
So I wonder why the iPhone should be more powerful...?

I just stated what a Pandora is useful for, that big impressive commercial games are better on the PSP than on the Pandora... but claiming the iPhone is more powerful when both the CPU and GPU of the Pandora seem to be superior (unless I missed something or did something wrong here!) is wrong and should be corrected
