Pandora, Looking Good!

And also the he says the preorders start september 30th for 250€.

My complete lack of understanding of the German Language left me fairly frustrated whilst watching the chip.de interview of ED. Anyone care to translate?

he mentions something about it being similar to the nintendo DS, and it being a mini PC-PDA hybrid. that's all I could understand. :(

I don't know German either but from what I gathered ED was just talking about its features(wifi, touchscreen, etc.) what games it can play(dif. emulators like amiga and psx, and homebrew) and that it's not just for gaming, but a umpc as well. He mentioned the websites(openpandora.org and .de) and probably something about price/dates, but I dunno. A proper translation would be nice no doubt, but I'm not sure anything new was said.

yikes!

thats like 400 dollars....
I thought the price was going to remain the same...
I looked at the price in US dollars a few days ago, and I was a little surprised about the price. I'm willing to pay that though, it runs Linux, is open, has a key board, wifi, all the other features, and is still cheaper than all the other umpcs. Also, it's probably the most UM of the UMPCs out there.

I'm not too good with spoken german the way I am with written text but I can give you a vague translation.

This is the first public prototype of the Pandora. It's a handheld about the same size as a DS which we have been developing over the past year. It's a combination of a mini-pc, pda and games console. It runs on Linux so it's free software, so that anyone who already programs for linux can program for this.
<Not sure what is said here but I think ED said that you don't have to run linux use it, just copy programs onto the sd card and go>
<Something I don't understand at all>
It has an 800x480 screen, touchscreen, keyboard, WLAN so it's great for surfing the net, messaging and writing emails.
- So What can you play on pandora?
It's possible to play emulators like Amiga or other emulators up to the Playstation. Or of course you can play homebrew games or self-written games. There are already quite a few good ones for linux.
- My question is when can I buy it, where and for how much?
All the info is on openpandora.de, Preorders will start on 30th September for 250 Euro and it should be sent out on 13th November.

I think the US price is lower at $330 because it doesn't include VAT

i checked the price on openpandora.org and it still says 330 (it has been 330 for months), but 240 euro is way higher than that, so did it actually increase, or are prices really that different?

Any one else catch the blog entry by ED?
This could be old news and I'm just completely oblivious.

EDIT:-||enigmacipher The European price includes VAT, and the US price does not.

The blog entry on .de is the same as on .org just saying about the video.

I posted this on the other thread but I'll post it again here.

VAT, people, VAT. See what Socialism gets you? :p

Anyway, this is awesome. Leipzig is a big deal, good to see Pandora is out there getting recognized. Though with all this talk about the 30th, it's leading me to believe we may not see that 15th special preorder for us forumgoers. Is something like that still in the works?

God the days are dragging on till release. I wish I hadn't seen or heard of the pandora till it was released. I'm buying a gp2x off ebay to tide me over till i get my hands on one. Roll on release day :) The Pandora is gonna be HUGE. Just hope the price isn't gonna sky rocket :)

To tell you the truth, I hope it isn't huge. I mean, yeah, I'd love for guys like Craig, MWeston, ED, etc. to make a good load of cash on it, for sure. Being the dirty Capitalist pig I am, this is hard for me to say, seeing as I normally defend successful products and the like, but I like having cutting-edge stuff that's obscure, y'know?

Either way, I don't think it'll be gigantic from a sales standpoint, maybe a few hundred thousand more than what the GP2x did. I think where Pandora will be big is the model it will create for the big boys as they develop their new handheld systems. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a PSP2 or Xbox handheld that was essentially designed as a corporate spin on Pandora.

Yup, just read it a moment ago. This was the part that interested me the most;

While public press is good, here is something that might be of higher interest for some of you:
RedSpotGames, publisher for Last Hope and Wind & Water Puzzle Battles for the Dreamcast announced that they will produce and publish commercial games for the Pandora. They already have some licenses for ports (I can't tell the titles here), this als means there will be most probably an enhanced version of Wind & Water Puzzle Battles, one of the greatest puzzle games I know!

The line "They already have some licenses for ports (I can't tell the titles here)" has me especially curious.

incredible news! :D i just sent an email to my sister, who speaks and understands german reasonably well. i'm hoping for a full translation, but she hates all video games except for The Sims, so she'll probably just taunt me like we're 8 and 10 again. <_<
