Pandora: Japan Promo Website. (Warning: It's beta)

Love it. Arrow keys for navigation <3  very good.

First image whitebalance and temeperature is a bit wrong. Looks like fluorescent lighting, which is offputting.

Also you are holding it a bit tight, a more delicate holding could do. If you hold it the other way around the logo is the right way up. hmm, there is no good way of doing that i suppose, disregard.

How about turning it and not having the hand, japanese people arent big on buying devices built by foreigners (?)

Firefox screen looks worse than the other ones, it has that dithering crt effect. No Streetfighter 2 screen?

How about DejaVu sans for non raster font?

Debian has logos that are pixelated. Could do a very small 32x32 one

So far so good, as most of the content is centre justified why not make the menu on the top centred as well? IMHO this would help with the look and feel of the site.

If the purpose is to generate sales why not also have a version that can also be viewed on smaller screens (phones, tablets, netbooks etc.) as well. By limiting the sites usability to people with large desktop monitors you also limit your reach to potential customers.
This version should work fine on tablets.

...
It does not work fine on Tablets, tried with a nexus 7, the problem is not screen size, but screen resolution, my guess is that most tablets in use today still have a similar or smaller screen resolution to the Nexus 7.

If you want to see how your site looks on a variety of screen resolutions then see here : http://quirktools.com/screenfly/

If you could change the HTML to allow dynamic resizing then you'd get it displaying properly on a wider variety of screen resolutions.

Except the ipad. Most people who have a tablet have a iPad in Japan (usually 2 or 3): Anyone could test on a real ipad2/3 to confirm ?

iPad 2 has a resolution of 1024X768 (less than Nexus 7's 1280 X 800).

You don't need anyone with an ipad to test it, just use the quirktools link above and select tablet / iPad2 to see how it looks at 1024X768.

I like it. I also didn't have any problems finding the arrows to scroll left or right, maybe because on big screens I use a reduced window for better overview?

I strongly suggest you create a fallback if Javascript is disabled though!! It doesn't have to be an alternate page or anything, just a message saying that you need Javascript on the top if it's not detected would do. I also got the garbled-up page at first, which makes you want to leave at once.

Actually I found that since I disable scripts by default, it became almost a sign of page quality if there is a fallback-version. And in general I prefer to use the script-free version of a page if there is one. I do like the design of your page though, and it works very well.

I checked on their ipad mini setting in landscape mode and the site displays just fine (except for the first page maybe). Why doesn't it work on your Nexus ?
The problem is mostly with the front page, i.e. the most important page on the site.

With Opera 12.16 (just to precise I'm using the Presto engine and not the new Webkit/Blink) I can see only half-pandoras on the sides of the page, in every page, I tried also to zoom out but the "half-pandoras", even if smaller remained there...

In the page with the grey background I can see the description of the function on the center of the screen, but those half pandoras are still on the sides

Like the general feel to it. :)

I did notice a peculiar detail: the battery info page image reads "4000 mA" while the text uses the correct unit "mAh".

How about:

"my music and media player, wristwatch, memo-recorder, todo list, e-reader, test machine, navigator, all rolled up into one, oh and incidentally, it plays also games."... a pocketable companion for life (well, at least for +10 hours).

if it looks like post #7 in this thread then you need to enable java script. i also got it with firefox 24 because i use noscripts and adblockplus.

its nice that you can scroll through the pages . might be nice when you get to the last page if it wrapped around to the first page again??

No, the page is clean, and the pandoras are switching correctly when I click on the arrows, them just aren't in the center of the page

first impression: looks clean and fresh. I like how you emphasize the native applications and games.

You should definitely add a fallback page for ppl who have JS disabled (like F_Slim already suggested). Just a welcome page with a "please enable JavaScript" message would be sufficient.

Content-wise I was missing the audio-aspect of the Pandora. Maybe you could add another page for that, something along the lines of "high quality headphone output", "35+ hours music playback"
(I know, the wikipedia page says 100+ hours but I have not managed to get the power consumption below 0.4W during mp3 playback. maybe 50+ hours can be achieved with further SW optimizations?!)

And yes, I think that it was a good idea to _not_ enter the "tech specs race" by throwing numbers and benchmark figures at ppl who will most likely not be able to make sense out of them, anyway.

That's good marketing :)

Ah, one last thing I was missing: I think it would be a good idea to also add a "connectivity" section and mention USB2 / WiFi / Bluetooth. Even non-geeks will understand that.

p.s.: I used google translate to read the content.

p.p.s.: The packaging looks real slick, much better than "gray box" my Pandora was shipped in

p.p.p.s.: Do you ship the Pandora with a quickstart manual ? I could have used one of those when I got my Pandora around a month ago. I had to do some digging to find out about the basic controls (right nub mouse emulation) and I only accidentally learnt about the power switch hold function ;)

Yeah could do that but i highly doubt most japanese even know how to disable javascript or even care about doing that :)

I have another page but it's not fully ready yet. I wont mention the nb of hours of audio playback because that's not the point and nobody uses the Pandora only for audio so it' kind of irrelevant. I will focus on the quality part.

I have a page almost ready for USB but not ready to include yet. As for wifi and BT I cannot include it because BT and wifi is disabled for importation to Japan. Additional registration is needed for Japan and it costs tons of money and its technically a hassle to submit and prepare for that. So no mention of BT or wifi for Japan.

Thanks, most people who got it usually say its a work of art :) Btw if you want the box only I sell it for overseas clients on http://pandorafromjapan.stores.jp

Yeah, it ships with a manual in japanese that I am constantly improving. This is also something my customers really appreciate. I have put a lot of work in preparing for the Japan launch as you can imagine :)

Hmmm... besides my general critiques about todays internet sites (white! why everyone uses white backgrounds? it't blinding me! :D use black ,the ONLY colour I would ever do websites ;)  ) the site seems to be bugy in Opera (wrong placement of the Graphics or is this intended)  and completely bugy in Firefox (everything is overlaping). I also miss some clear layout and stuff like frames, lines, borders, anything that segments the site for better overview.

I recommend to use some simpler, plain html code so performance and browser compatibility are maxed out. I guess you use "not-so-standard-stuff" to make this site? At least your code of the site gives me headaches. ^^""

P.S.: tested of course with disabled addblockers and enabled all stuff like JS & Co. Didn't helped much. I use Opera 12.16

#333333 is my choice for site backgrounds :)

I use Opera Next, 17.0, I don't notice any problems with placement
