Nvidia's Project Shield - 'Android & Tegra 4 inside'

WOW, Conkers at full speed uh? How well do the controls map, in regards to the N64? I'm guessing you can map the right analog as the camera buttons?

I'm guessing you guys are using the standard Android emu's right? I'm not to familiar with Android, but is it possible the Shield could receive it's own specific optimized emu's at some point, are is it more of a closed device like an iPod Touch?

I'm guessing these emu's work so great, just due to the shear horse power being thrown at them, but getting ones that are optimized would be super cool. I know most Android devices aren't up to Shields specs, so it would be nice to see some later systems attempted, since this device seems more up to the task than any other current tablets or smartphones.

Chris
Having to use Mupen64+AE for N64 as N64Oid won't map the right analog stick. But that being said, Mupen on Android isn't all that bad :)

@jumpman I never had a neo geo pocket, but if you look at the teardown and see the contruction you'll see the construction is similar to the pandora, there is a soft click to the dpad though if thats what your talking about.

Full review of the Shield is now up on Engadget here: http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/31/nvidia-shield-review/
I actually woke up to several reviews this morning, and they all seem more positive, than negative. Over at NeoGAF, most of the members are surprised by the positive reviews. As usual, if you don't understand a device, than it's not for you. So many guys leave such negative comments, and they have no clue why a device like this would appeal to someone. Even if you don't look at this for gaming, it has kick-ass performance and best almost another tablet or smartphone around, and it's priced waaaayyyyy better.

I've been interested in getting a tablet for awhile, and what has always stopped me, was the lack of gaming controls. Although things like ICP, and other Bluetooth controllers exist, I'm more about the controls being included. So far the biggest negative I have seen for me would be the lack of a good way to hold the screen to use the onscreen keyboard.

I really think they should have allowed the screen to flip over on to the device, so that it could be held proper for screen press inputs. That would also be good for playing those android games that only work in portrait mode. When I use my DS/3DS sideways for portrait games, it's not to bad since both half's are the same overall shape and weight. It's like holding open a book. The reviews point out how heavy the control portion is, and this has to be a consideration when holding the Shield certain ways. I'm sure if this device sees decent sales, they will offer an improved design somewhere down the line.

Overall, it's looking nice. My main concerns right now would be overall controller support and games down the road. Nvidia isn't a big game player like Nintendo or Sony in regards to making games, but they have relationships with almost every game maker in the industry due to their standard business. So if anyone can make a device like this, and gain some decent long term standards and support, I think they can. Almost every ios and android game maker should see the value in having proper game controls for their games(if the device has physical controls or not), and this is a solid step in the right direction for an industry standard.

Now I just need to see some N64 and overall emu performance, and I should be getting one soon. All the reviews state how fast this thing runs, so I'm really looking forward to what can be done in regards to the devices emulation performance, it should be awesome.

You may want to check Gamestop.com.  I've just ordered 2 additional ones now I have 3!  :D

Conker 64 is finally playable on a handheld device?...omfg.

How good are the preinstalled games ?

I will be looking at my tracking number everyday every hour now. I hate this part.   :(

@hailrazer check out your dpad, does the entire dpad travel a bit in the well? Like you can move the dpad assembly around (not twist). Its the weirdest thing, its not bad at all, doesn't effect the accuracy, just interesting. Think it sort of enhances the ability to control a bit.

@Shenmue

Yeah, Gamestop is sold out to. I'm probably going to wait on Newegg to restock, as they have an ETA of the 5th, which is next Monday. Plus they don't charge tax, and shipping(in certain situations). Once GS gets done with tax and shipping, a 300 dollar item is an extra 30+ dollars. They didn't even bother shipping this to any local stores, so that's not an option either.

Hell, I'll sell some on Ebay before I buy any on there :D

Yeah, I'm in no rush, I actually don't really have the funds right now anyways, but if demands stays high(at least for the next few weeks), I can grab a few and sell them to help pay for my unit.

Chris

Unfortunately it's not available in Australia, which means we need to go through scalpers on ebay or via a proxy buyer

Maybe I'll sell my Epoch Game Pocket Computer + games and pick one up. Tempting

Yes it does move around, the whole d-pad. Weird.

Also mine was a little stiff, had to move it around a bit to loosen it up.  (No comments pervs).   :)

Has anyone that purchased from Newegg received theirs yet? Mine is en route via FedEx. I don't think it'll make it here tomorrow and I'm not sure if FedEx runs on Saturdays. Might have to wait till Monday which sucks since I have a 4 day weekend!

What shipping option did you go with? If you went with that "Egg Saver" crap, don't expect it soon, unless your near where it shipped from, and even then it can take awhile.

Normally, I believe they use UPS for 1, 2 or 3 day air, and Fed Ex is used for their saver option. This is the dumbest shipping I have ever seen in my life.

Newegg gives the package to Fed Ex, who in turn takes it the slow way to your nearest postal facility, and then hands it off to them. Then you have to wait on the post office to deliver it.

I got my wife the Animal Crossing XL bundle and it took a whole 10 days from shipping to me receiving it(7 business days, 9-10 actual days). I don't know how much this service cost Newegg, but it can't be cost effective for anyone involved. How much is Fed Ex charging, then the Post Office takes over, so I would guess they get a cut, so why not just send it by one method?

I personally don't understand it, but never use "Egg Saver" shipping, unless you are in no rush, as it normally takes at least a week, if not more(at least for me it does). I use to get packages from them next day, as they would use UPS 3 day, and it almost always shipped from CA and I'm in NV. Now, they always ship from the east coast, and 3 day takes the full 3 days, and the saver packages take forever.

FedEx ships on Saturday , no Ground shipping on Monday.

Thanks for the responses guys. I just tracked it and it has left Ohio which is really only 2 states away from Jersey so hopefully Saturday will be the day..... hopefully!

Can someone try the tougher MAME titles, stuff that uses multiple CPU's.

TIA

I actually just saw this review last night before I went to bed^

Yeah, it was pretty good. I actually watch the whole 23 minutes. I never last that long with these Youtube reviews, as the reviewer has no concept of how to stay on point and keep the viewers interest for longer than a few minutes at a time(I normally just jump around). She was very well spoken, and kept on point the whole time. This was the best review I have seen for any device in a long time.

Chris

I guess us European folk will just have to wait... :(

Could you all put up videos so we can live through your experiences?

Why can't you just download STEAM games directly on the Shield without a PC?  I own a iMac

Not being able to store games on the micro sd card is a downer. hopefully that will change soon with an update.

I still am excited to get mine delivered.
