Nintendo Revolution Specs Have Been Released

N-REV will be the console for true (read mature) gamers who enjoy great games that are way more than just graphics.
-Insert rant about "next gen" games.-

The "virtual console" feature alone is a big selling point to me, all the classics in one console, and legal! Exactly what i want.

No it won't...

Why is everybody so concerned about how they look when they're playing games? To everyone who does, do yourself a favor; buy a dreamcast, Samba de Amigo, and the Cha Cha Maracas (get the official ones, if you're lucky enough to find some).

Yes, you look stupid. But yes, it's a lot of fun.

GC graphics often pale in comparison when the isue of ports are raised, unless they're ports from the GC to something else. But I dont think I ever saw the system hiccup while playing games that were also on other systems which I assume equates to a better processor.

Well anyway a faster smoother gamplay experience gets a thumbs up in a battle of Ports. (of course there also a question of game price and controller comfort but I'm trying to stay on topic.)

Nintendo historically hasn't received all that many ports to their consoles. Very few on N64, and the GameCube's always left out of cross-platform releases.

I think that the Revolution--thanks to its weakness compared to the other machines and its controller--will receive even less multi-platform titles. Of course, I think the Revo was developed with the hope of being the "second choice" platform, so this might be mostly a non-issue (at least as far as Nintendo's strategy is concerned).

All I know is that I loved the Duke Nukem port to N64. Split-screen co-op ftw. And it had true-3D graphics (at least the walls, characters were still sprites) instead of the weird 2.5D walls.

And now I'm done being off-topic.

The Revolution might very well be the first non-handheld console I buy, just because it has the virtual console stuff. That looks soooo cool to me, and when they announced that they were including Genesis games, I was basically sold. I know you can whine and say that you can emulate these already, but it just isn't the same somehow.

Well Consoles and Portable Consoles are very different.

so Nintendo's target audience is now the super nerdy that won't mind waving around a stupid stick like their retarded or 3-8 year old kids.

Ha, yeah, it's a ridiculous idea  Or imagine those geeks when the next "controller" is designed. Maybe it will be something idiotic like... a stick with buttons! Bwahaha, they will sure look like idiots moving that stick around. Maybe add a button on top so you have a phallus reference! Hahaha, that's great. Hey, they have fun using it, right? We could call it.... Fun-stick, or happy-stick....
Haha, and then imagine those nerds talking to each other, trying to convince each other that they are not as nerdy as the next one! "Yes, of course I play that I am a super soldier on an alien world and that I alone can save the world, but you play with a stick! Hahahaha!"
Ah m,an, that's comedy gold right there. There is a reason no controller was ever designed like a stick and that is because the only viable method of input is a pad and everything else looks STOOPID.

So nice to read this thread, and not having to wade through pages of fanboism rants!!!

But, Angel, I think you have missed a tiny point. I agree with a lot of what you are saying, that you are disappointed that the Rev isn't more powerful, and how you want to play next gen games etc. But...

What is next gen? How can games keep evolving into next gen games? In the past it was easy, as we started out with pong, 2600, spectrum etc. But I am playing through Resi Evil4 on the ps2 now, and I am wondering if graphics keep getting better, how much more will this increase my enjoyment?

Don't get me wrong, I want the best graphics possible. I want designers to consider themselves artists and be able to release all the creative juices in the course of satisfying my gaming needs etc. But the graphics in Resi Evil 4 are so good, that they really 'do the job'.

Nintendo know this. The graphics for the Rev will be very good. Obviously not as good as the other two, but very good indeed. But Nintendo know something else, they know the games they want to make. They know them, and know what hardware they need. The rev is made by Nintendo for Nintendo. We will have games that are made by the most successful game devs in history (IMO). They really know gamers.

Of course, there are a lot of you who don't enjoy Nintendo games anymore. Maybe as a kid Mario blew your mind and you can never replace those gaming memories. Or maybe you just want different games. But for me, and I am sure the majority of casual gamers I want fun games. And Ninty gives me these.

The truth of this for me is the DS. You, Angel are disappointed by the comparitavely weak performance, compared to the PSP. But the general concensus on these and other boards is that we are having more fun with the ds than the psp. I am definitely!

So let Nintendo do their thing, and trust them to deliver the most fun games. I cannae wait!

Thought there wasn't much of a gap between the two in terms of sales.

I think he fails to realise that the gaming industry in general and especially Nintendo doesn´t just exist to fulfill his needs, but to make money.

He is worried about looking stupid with a new gamecontroller, but wtf? Is he living in a greenhouse?

Oh well, everyone has some peculiar beliefs, even me...

its just the expectation of Next generation, not particularly in graphics, though due to past technologies, graphics WAS ALWAYS A PART OF DEFINING A GENERATION AND MOVING INTO THE NEXT. It's been that way since 1978, so now we're getting into a generation where the visual gap is not going to be as great as past years, so how are the gaming companies progressing? The use of HD, more powerful processors capable of more complicated AI and scenerios, like have a hundred army men on a playing field with their own individual AI, new media storage, Blu Ray. Xbox 360 and PS3 look to be using these methods to differ themselves from the previous generation, not just a graphical difference, but the Revolution, at least at this point, doesn't hint to have anything to differentiate itself from the previous generation except for a new controller.

And i do know the industry is to make money not fulfill my needs , but whatever your problem is with me fishass is, I know i'm not the only one, even on this board, that is disappointed with the release of the Revolutions specs. And again when looking at it on paper, and as DaveC, NOT ME, has already pointed out, there's nothing revolutionary about the revolution.

Revolution is just a codename, afterall. Remember when N64 was called "Project Reality"? :D hardly seems like it now.

And speaking of the power glove, that thing kicked ass for one sole reason: Super Glove Ball. That game had not only x/y movement, but depth also. It may have just been a 3d arkanoid, but it really had an incredibly imersive feel.

My point is this: while the power glove really was nothing more than a gimmick when used to control existing games, it DID have a very fun potential with games created just for it. While Nintendo will still use regular controllers (gamecube and such) for "classic" style games, i can see the pontential for their remote controller. A lot of developers seem to feel the same way having used it.

ANgel, you are making no sense. You want Nintendo to produce the same machine as SOny or Microsoft? Just to join the Graphic race like the others? Would you really be happier if Ninty was gonna make a massively powerful games machine, costing $450, that could do the same stuff as the other two and no more? Why aren't you happy that Ninty is going in another direction, looking to push the gaming experience in another direction, other than the same one as sony and microsoft(cos they are)?

I think nex gen machines at the moment aren't all about how good the graphics will look. Sure HD is fine, but I bought a new TV 3 or 4 years ago. Cost me £1500 and it ain't HD. I can't buy a new one that quickly, nor do I really want to. Blue Ray is intersting, but what I really want is a better DVD player on my ps3, ie. a recordable one with hard drive. Ninty don't want to offer me that, so I will get a ps3. But I will definitely get a Rev. Why? I like Nintendo games!

I remember waiting for the PS2, seeing the Gran Tourismo demo and being blown away. But now, graphics just don't excite me so much.

But no, Next Gen for me is about new gaming experiences, and the new controller is part of it.

And how is a few more characters on screen next gen?

We can bitch about the new pad all we like, but who of us has seen it?

And the next wave of consoles will be the first generation that are really geared towards online play out of the box. Another new thing that isn't about how super powerful the console is.
