and snes9x is by far not 100%, playing teh game on real hardware still feals completly different, even compared to my a64 3500+.
Emulation will NEVER match the real hardware.

you know... I honestly have no clue what people are talking about when they say that. Maybe you're using the wrong emulators or something because the only difference I've ever noticed is that of a few sounds. one of the Megaman X games had a few sounds in a water level that weren't quite right. There were also some sounds in Chrono Trigger that were a bit off, but I forget exactly what they were. I think some of the monster sounds were messed up. Zelda 3 also had some sounds that were off. I'm pretty sure it was the one that plays when you hold your sword out and stab the wall. Other than that though, everything is exactly the same(i'm sure there are a lot more messed up sounds. what I mean though is that the speed is the same). I'm known among my friends for paying great attention to detail, finding and remembering little things like that easily. Stuff like that bothers the hell out of me, but I haven't noticed at all with any of my emulators(the ones on my PC, not my GP32. there is a HUGE difference with SNES emulation... but everyone already knows that. there's also a small difference with DrMD. Some of the games have slightly slow sound. The video is perfect, but the sound "lags" a little).

I wouldn't be surprised if less than one percent of gamers out there emulate, so they might be happy to play games from yesteryear on a console.

To me and many others it's a great feature IF the price is not too high! I would pay up to a tenner for a great Snes game, maybe a little more for a N64 game. I think! I mean, Zelda ocarina of time, for £15? Not bad!

There seems to me to be a point here. When I was a kid, I had an enormous collection of spectrum games, mostly copied from someone's copy. I had no income of my own to be able to buy the originals. If I couldn't copy them, I couldn't play them, full stop!

Now, some of us here have jobs and some of us don't. Whilst not condoning piracy, I can understand how people wanna play games that they can't afford. So i feel almost duty bound to buy games and consoles to support the gaming industry. And feel myself less of a fanboy, cos I can afford to buy all 3 consoles (as long as my wife doesn't find out-so stumm on how much my PSP cost!!!!). Guys like Sam want the Xbox to be a success because he is 12 or 13, he wants to play all his favourite xbox games remade for the 360, and hopes that he will be backing the winning horse. This is the only reason for such loyalty to one console.

Incidently, the Gamecube didn't fail at all! Just not sold as many as the others. But it still made some of the best games of recent times. So there will be SO many people who will buy the new Ninty anyway. Throw in a few features to attract parents ("Download Great games for peanuts!"), and I think Ninty has got it's marbles back!

I know many who emulate, even stupid jerks...

Most likely the Revolution will be using emulation too, Vimacs. Even Nintendo cant emulate things perfectly.

lol, it would be hilarious if their emulators were worse than homebrew ones. I'd laugh my ass off. Go, ZSNES!

thats why they usaly dont emulate, they just build the whole system in it. see gba, ds, gameboy player, ique.

The Gameboy player uses a GBA emulator on the disk it comes with. And thats how they were able to patent GBA emulation...

You realize how big, power sucking, and expensive it would be if it had all that hardware built in, its rediculous.

no it dont, theres the complete gba hardware in the official gb player.

and system on chip is pretty cheap, espacialy for such old system, you could put all 4 on one chip without problems and its still not more complex than a few year old cpu.

I agree with Vimacs... I think it wouldn't be hard at all to incorporate actual N64, SNES and NES hardware into the Revolution very easily and cheaply... they should all play pixel perfect. I guess they aren't going to be offering EVERY SINGLE game for each of those systems though (no surprise really) but rather, will be offering "the best of the games" for each system.

Though it's a cool feature to include, I could care less if it had that compatibility, as far as determining whether it's worth buying for me or not. It's already 90% likely I'll buy it just because it's Nintendo and I love Mario Zelda and Metroid. But if the price isn't reasonable for the level of technology it is at, and the library of games is poor once you subtract 1st party stuff, then I have to really debate it a bit. But for $100 there is no debate. Where did that $100 rumor get started anyways??? Somehow it doesn't make sense... $150 maybe... but considering they are thinking of asking $100 for the GBA Micro, it seems odd and stupid to sell their newest home console for the same price... among many other reasons.

I would still buy the system at $150. I don't think I would be willing to pay any more for it, though.

I forsee myself utilizing it mostly for its GC compatibility. Actually, I have found I'm kind of regarding it as a GC redesign with some (admittedly rather large) extras.

Should be interesting...

Well they had to do it in hardware with GB, GBA etc as those systems would not be powerful enough to emulate the older system in software.

The Xbox 360 is emulating an Xbox to get backward compatibility. I Suppose then the 360 could emulate a GC (uses the same PowerPC family so that would be easy) and all of the older Nintendo systems like the Rev does, as well as Dreamcast PSX etc. If h4xx0rz can crack the 360 or PS3 they could emulate almost any old system.

man, my a64 3500+ is better than yours, so don't bother :p and all the processing power in the world will not make a program do more than what it was written to do!
and yeah, whatever nintendo will have, it will be through emulation. all their systems don't share the same type of components, so it'll have to be through emulation, which probably won't end up as feature rich as what is freely available now. and all the imperfections in all the 'complete' emulators are very very minute, except on some games.

get an xbox! play on xsnes9x, better than anything nintendo itself would come out with :D
i don't see how this feature would appeal to you guys, but whatever. i hope nintendo isn't making this their number one feature.

I hate having to repeat myself but:

I WANT TO EMULATE LEGALLY

then buy the original hardware and carts! we all do...most of the time :D you can't exactly buy old arcade machines all the time..

i'd MUCH rather have the old consoles and original carts, and also be able to play them on whatever platform their emulator runs on.

^ I wonder that too, be awesome to ealily obtain all those games that weren't released here.
On that note, I hope they release games like StarFox2 and other almost completed but never released games. And Possibly release SNESDD and 64DD games and i actually hope unlike others they set up a small team to finish games and translate others.

Oh and to however said that 512mb is to small, you can upgrade this space with an SD card, so you could get a card per games system.

And off topic. The Xbox wireless controllers can be recharged by being plug into the console. Microsoft must have been watching us.

lol. are they infared as a mag says? J allard talks about signals not getting mixed up through walls which suggests not infared. and head sets through infared does not seem right ;)

Why is emulation never as good as the real thing?

I think its better. You can play at a higher resolution making many N64 games (Mario 64 for example) look better than they ever did on the original hardware.

Controller adaptors mean you dont have to use crappy controls. You can also change the button options, as you could never do on many console games.

Save states mean you can have the choice of saving wherever. Helpful if you need to go somewhere.

Some emulators even have features such as the ability to 'fast-forward', meaning you can skip cut scenes you've already seen before.

If you think the real hardware is better than emulation, fair enough. I personally think that that is just psychological, because if you have a top quality emulator and hardware, emulation can even be better.

Well, having the three new consoles plus this generations consoles plus a snes, nes and n64 would take up rather a lot of room don't you think? Also, have you SEEN how much some of the rarer 64 or snes games go for? Fuck off am I paying sixty quid for a second hand copy of conkers bad fur day or the secret of mana or whatever.

@Vimacs

I agree, although I actually dislike the fast-forward option. find myself using it far to much and it kind of ruins the experience (although that is more my fault I guess  )

I paid $80 for Chrono Trigger when it was new... If emulation isn't as good, and you want a legal way to play the old games, why not buy the real things? Videogames have always been pretty expensive, and that's not gonna change. I'd rather have the original cartridge than download it on the Revolution anyway.
