Nintendo 3DS

Pretty sure no-one ever said anything about telephones "ruining" anything or "killing" anyone's profit, but again, would absolutely love to see a genuine, un-spun-by-the-press quote. I was pretty sure that everyone was aware by now that these are different markets that happen to have a bit of overlap (same as mobile telephones and landlines, tablets and laptops/desktops, wargames and board games, and so on and so forth), by this point.

Again, would love to see the article about the second loss you mentioned, also. I haven't been able to find anything about it - just some blogs from three days ago inexplicably re-running the story from an entire year ago about Iwata's salary. All other results are the one from April.

Google search for the old stories re the Nintendo president bashing apple and smartphone gaming and saying that it's wrecking the industry. He said it, it wasn't hidden or a press beat up. He was mentioning it plenty at the time. And angrily to boot, he had a point to make about it.

Here's just one of the stories about his comment re: iphone ipads etc. You need to look for his comments before the financial year results were published. The official results always blame bullshit reasons like poor conditions or the famous currency parity. I'm pretty sure I even saw tv footage of him (Iwata) talking about the threat of iphone / smart-phone gaming and how it was eating into there profits. It's not like it's a secret.

As for Nintendo vs SONY , they are vastly different companies. While SONY can gamble and put out game devices at a loss, Nintendo have never done that before the 3DS. They have a completely different business model of only launching things that make a profit from price point. SONY are notorious for taking risks . The other thing to note is that SONY's game division is part of much bigger company whereas Nintendo , gaming is there heart. Even if gaming fails for SONY and they pull out, they are likely to go on with there many other product they make.

^ Thanks for the link, although I must admit that I don't see how it's suddenly bullshit if it's being said after fiscal results are published, but it's not when it's said when earnings forecasts are lowered in advance. Ah well.

As for the footage you mention, the link I provided seems to cover that one.

Companies always mention a lot of old tosh at official results reporting time. Currency parity and the global conditions are the 2 top responses - the most publicly correct statements so to speak. There are always real reasons why a company is not doing well. So yes, it is rubbish to a degree.

As far as Nintendo's future , the next financial years should tell. Nintendo has a huge cash reserve, so they should be able to weather a few bad losses. So the next 2 results should tell the story.

I wonder why two, when Sony is deemed ok in spite of their last four as an entire company (and eight for the TV arm)? But, that's beyond the scope of this thread, I imagine... :p

So, in the spirit of the scope of the thread, the new Smash Bros. team from Sora and Namco-Bandai drew this*;

*Note: Not actually true. It's just a super-early game promo, unfortunately.

EDIT: And sadly it gives nothing away, but perhaps possibly the hopeful absence of the irrelevant third-party characters from the previous game.

Not saying SONY is in any better shape than Nintendo, just that they have other areas to fall back on in there business.

On a different note: I heard the 3DS XL does not come with a charger , apparently it needs to be bought seperately. Is this true?

^ In some countries, but not all, yes. The same as the Famicom, and Super Famicom.

(As for Sony, correct: They're in much worse shape, and the other areas for them to fall back on are also making losses. That's the problem. :p )

Yeah, no charger for UK or Japan(but those folks get their 3DS XL 3 weeks before the US). So you can buy just the charger separately, or you can buy a charger and cradle combo pack. USA gets the charger in the box, but I'm not sure if we get the cradle or not. I never used my cradle, so they can keep it.

My only gripe is that it's shoehorning in other Disney movies, but I get that that's because the Epic Mickey "universe" is a bit meta and unifies various media that Disney has produced, with the characters aware of the fact that they're animation/game stars. Still, it doesn't look like it's going to affect the game negatively.

And, after all, this is by the same people who made Henry Hatsworth, and Monster Tale... :D

I never used my cradle, so they can keep it.
I never even used the charger... :lol: I use one of those retractable DSi/3DS USB charging cables - may as well draw off of my computer or laptop, I figure. That, and it means I only need to carry one USB wall-charger when I go places (I use a similar, albeit non-retractable, cable for my Pandora, too).

EDIT: I just saw some news from the investors' conference: It seems that the 3DS is now profitable again, quite some time in advance of the previous forecast of it becoming profitable again this September.

Chris

Buy one now in preparation for it's arrival.

talk about it here in its own thread just because I can't stop drooling about it. It looks so beautiful. My precious! I can't wait to get one.

Nintendo 3DS has great games but it's a bad feeling if you're used to a big Pandora screen.

Finally we get a bigger screen for those games.

kid Icarus was that horrible to pplay with that smal screen.

Kid Icarus is horrible to play because of the broken controls - nothing to do with the screen. The in-air game is brilliant, it;s when you're running around the levels it becomes painful.

Just dropping in to check, guys... Is there really any need for a dedicated thread when it's functionally identical to the standard-sized model? Is there really some reason that having a bigger device can't be discussed in the big 3DS thread, and will that sustain a conversation for long? :p

Try the FPS-style controls (face buttons for movement, Circle Pad for aiming, and the same old L to attack and double-R to align the camera behind you within a second). Nothing painful with those, if that helps any.

@Prometheus

Yeah, this thread probably isn't to needed, considering we have a regular 3DS thread, but as frz has stated, I'm excited for the XL as well, so a dedicated thread can't hurt. :lol:

Man, I wish the US was getting this at the end of the month. My birthday is the 29th, and the XL would be a kickass gift to my self. Oh well, I guess it will have to be a belated B-Day gift in August.

Chris

Alright, I'll leave it if you guys reckon it can sustain itself.

Happy (early) Birthday, by the way. :D

I tried every possible combination of keys/screen/stylus etc. for Kid Ic. None were great. Even Games TM (and other mags) stated the control scheme sucked. It was good Nintendo gave other options, but only because they knew that the controls sucked.
